Role of the supplementary motor area in the automatic activation of motor plans in de novo Parkinson's disease patients.

The role of the basal ganglia-cortical motor loop in automatic and unconscious motor processes is poorly understood. Here, we used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging in 11 de novo Parkinson's disease patients as they performed a visuomotor masked priming task. The stronger subliminal priming effect for the non-dominant side of motor symptoms than for the dominant side was paralleled by stronger supplementary motor area proper activity in response to lateralized visual stimuli presented below the threshold of awareness. This novel result supports the prediction that this area i

Mucopolysaccharidoses type I and II: new neuroimaging findings in the cerebellum.

BACKGROUND: The neuroimaging literature on mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) is focusing mostly on supratentorial findings. Our study aims to extend the spectrum of neuroimaging findings in patients with MPS focusing on the cerebellum. METHODS: Twelve patients were included (7 MPS type I and 5 MPS type II). The median age at last MRI was 9.9 years (mean age 10.1 years, range 1.8-28.8 years). All available brain MR images were retrospectively evaluated for infratentorial and supratentorial abnormalities with semiquantitative analysis and qualitative evaluation. RESULTS: Infratentorial findings incl

Reliability of side-to-side sonographic cross-sectional area measurements of upper extremity nerves in healthy volunteers.

OBJECTIVES: In sonographic evaluations of peripheral nerves, the healthy, contralateral side may be used as an internal control for the pathologic one. Therefore, the inherent side-to-side differences must be minimal. The goal of this study was to determine the reliability of side-to-side measurements of upper extremity nerves in healthy volunteers. METHODS: Forty participants with no upper extremity abnormalities were included. Upper limb nerves were evaluated bilaterally at the usual pathologic sites by 3 musculo-skeletal radiologists in separate sessions. To assess intraobserver and intero

Subacute granulomatous (de Quervain) thyroiditis: grayscale and color Doppler sonographic characteristics.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the sonographic characteristics of subacute granulomatous (De Quervain) thyroiditis. METHODS: We retrospectively identified all patients at our institution during the last 11 years who had thyroid sonography with findings suggestive of subacute granulomatous thyroiditis. We then reviewed clinical data and laboratory results to establish the clinical diagnosis. A final diagnosis of subacute granulomatous thyroiditis was made on the basis of clinical symptoms, suppressed thyrotropin, an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and/or reduced or absent radionuclide uptake

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance evaluation of aortic stenosis severity using single plane measurement of effective orifice area.

BACKGROUND: Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is the standard method for the evaluation of the severity of aortic stenosis (AS). Valve effective orifice area (EOA) measured by the continuity equation is one of the most frequently used stenotic indices. However, TTE measurement of aortic valve EOA is not feasible or not reliable in a significant proportion of patients. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) has emerged as a non-invasive alternative to evaluate EOA using velocity measurements. The objectives of this study were: 1) to validate a new CMR method using jet shear layer detection

The structural correlates of functional deficits in early huntington's disease.

Neuropathological studies in Huntington disease (HD) have demonstrated neuronal loss in the striatum, as well as in other brain regions including the cortex. With diffusion tensor MRI we evaluated the hypothesis that the clinical dysfunction in HD is related to regionally specific lesions of circuit-specific cortico-basal ganglia networks rather than to the striatum only. We included 27 HD and 24 controls from the TRACK-HD Paris cohort. The following assessments were used: self-paced tapping tasks, trail B making test (TMT), University of Pennsylvania smell identification test (UPSIT), and apa

Involvement of the cerebellar cortex and nuclei in verbal and visuospatial working memory: a 7 T fMRI study.

The first aim of the present study was to extend previous findings of similar cerebellar cortical areas being involved in verbal and spatial n-back working memory to the level of the cerebellar nuclei. The second aim was to investigate whether different areas of the cerebellar cortex and nuclei contribute to different working memory tasks (n-back vs. Sternberg tasks). Young and healthy subjects participated in two functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies using a 7 T MR scanner with its increased signal-to-noise ratio. One group of subjects (n=21) performed an abstract and a verbal

Image-level tortuosity estimation in wide-field retinal images from infants with Retinopathy of Prematurity.

Tortuosity and dilation of retinal vessels are considered of primary importance for the diagnosis and follow-up of the Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) disease. We developed an algorithm to estimate vessel tortuosity in images acquired with a wide-field fundus camera in ROP subjects, offering clinicians a quantitative, objective, and reproducible diagnostic parameter. Vessels were manually traced in 20 images to provide error-free input data for the tortuosity estimation. At first we investigated different vessel-level measures, some including also caliber information. Then we used them to obt

A study of the standard brain in Japanese children: morphological comparison with the MNI template.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies involve normalization so that the brains of different subjects can be described using the same coordinate system. However, standard brain templates, including the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) template that is most frequently used at present, were created based on the brains of Western adults. Because morphological characteristics of the brain differ by race and ethnicity and between adults and children, errors are likely to occur when data from the brains of non-Western individuals are processed using these templates. Therefore, this

Carpal tunnel syndrome diagnosis by a self-normalization process and ultrasound compound imaging.

PURPOSE: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the common entrapment neuropathy that occurs due to compression of the median nerve at the wrist. Ultrasound images have been used to highlight anatomical variants of the median nerve, and CTS is thought to be associated to enlargement of the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the median nerve. However, there remains controversy regarding the most appropriate cutoff values of the computer measurements including the CSA, flattening ratio, and palmar bowing of median nerve, especially given that they can be influenced by image artifacts and factors that differ

Automated hippocampal shape analysis predicts the onset of dementia in mild cognitive impairment.

The hippocampus is involved at the onset of the neuropathological pathways leading to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are at increased risk of AD. Hippocampal volume has been shown to predict which MCI subjects will convert to AD. Our aim in the present study was to produce a fully automated prognostic procedure, scalable to high throughput clinical and research applications, for the prediction of MCI conversion to AD using 3D hippocampal morphology. We used an automated analysis for the extraction and mapping of the hippocampus from structural magnet

A fast analysis method for non-invasive imaging of blood flow in individual cerebral arteries using vessel-encoded arterial spin labelling angiography.

Arterial spin labelling (ASL) MRI offers a non-invasive means to create blood-borne contrast in vivo for dynamic angiographic imaging. By spatial modulation of the ASL process it is possible to uniquely label individual arteries over a series of measurements, allowing each to be separately identified in the resulting angiographic images. This separation requires appropriate analysis for which a general Bayesian framework has previously been proposed. Here this framework is adapted for clinical dynamic angiographic imaging. This specifically addresses the issues of computational speed of the al

Incidental findings of persistent primitive trigeminal artery on 3-dimensional time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography at 3.0 T: an analysis of 25 cases.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Currently, the presence of persistent primitive trigeminal artery (PPTA) is detected by digital subtraction angiography (DSA); most publications on this cerebrovascular variation have been individual case reports. This study is to evaluate the efficacy of 3-dimensional time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography (3D-TOF MRA) at 3.0 T for the detection and classification of PPTA based on a large case series. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between June 2007 and October 2008, 4,650 patients underwent magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) examination at 3.0 T in our hospital. MRA

Parenchymal lymphoma of the brain on initial MR imaging: a comparative study between primary and secondary brain lymphoma.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Parenchymal lymphomatous brain masses have not been investigated considering if they are primary or as a part of systemic lymphoma (secondary) on imaging studies previously. We aimed to determine characteristics of the secondary parenchymal lymphomatous involvement of the brain and to find if there is any radiologic feature to help discrimination of untreated primary and secondary central nervous system lymphoma on patients' initial magnetic resonance imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated MR images of 18 patients with the diagnosis of primary (n=12) and secondar

The development of print tuning in children with dyslexia: evidence from longitudinal ERP data supported by fMRI.

A consistent finding in functional brain imaging studies of reading with dyslexia is reduced inferior occipito-temporal activation linked to deviant processing of visual word forms. Time-sensitive event-related potentials (ERP) further revealed reduced inferior occipito-temporal N1 tuning for print in dyslexic 2nd graders suggesting the reduction affects fast processing and the initial development of dyslexia. Here, we followed up the same groups with ERP recordings and investigated how fast print tuning deficits in dyslexia develop from 2nd to 5th grade. Using functional magnetic resonance im
