Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are one of the most important and cost-effective tools for malaria control. Maximizing individual and community benefit from ITNs requires high population-based coverage. Several mechanisms are used to distribute ITNs, including health facility-based targeted distribution to high-risk groups; community-based mass distribution; social marketing with or without private sector subsidies; and integrating ITN delivery with other public health interventions. The objective of this analysis is to describe bednet coverage in a district in western Kenya where the primary

The risk factors of pupal infestation with community-based Aedes aegypti were identified in four areas of Playa municipality, located in the urban zone of Havana City The deposits with the highest positivity to the vector were the artificial ones and the low tanks. It was confirmed that 99.03% of the sites visited contained at least one deposit with water, and that 4 areas presented a very similar behaviour in ratio of tanks per site, since in all of them the water was supplied every other day. That is why the difference in the positivity was not due to factors related to the water supply. Of

West Nile virus is transmitted by urban-dwelling mosquitoes to birds and other animals, with occasional "spillover" to humans. While the means by which West Nile virus was introduced into the Americas in 1999 remain unknown, the climatic conditions that amplify diseases that cycle among urban mosquitoes, birds, and humans are warm winters and spring droughts. This information can be useful in generating early warning systems and mobilizing timely and the most environmentally friendly public health interventions. The extreme weather conditions accompanying long-term climate change may also be c

The effects of aerial ultralow volume (ULV) malathion on selected species of nontarget animals in Haiti are reported. Mortality of certain groups of insects such as bees, flies, beetles, and butterflies was observed immediately following spray application. Minor fish mortality occurred only in shallow water exposed to direct spray. The brain acetylcholine esterase levels of living fish, tree lizards, birds and bats collected from treated areas were not significantly reduced. No ill or dead animals, besides the few fish, were seen even when maximum exposure occurred. Only minor changes in the f

The island of Hispaniola aims to eliminate malaria by 2025; however, there are limited data to describe epidemiologic risk factors for malaria in this setting. A prospective case-control study was conducted at four health facilities in southwest Haiti, aiming to describe factors influencing the risk of current and past malaria infection. Cases were defined as individuals attending facilities with current or recent fever and positive malaria rapid diagnostic test (RDT), while controls were those with current or recent fever and RDT negative. Serological markers of recent and cumulative exposure

Ticks in the USA are the most important arthropod vector of microbes that cause human and animal disease. The blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis, the focus of this study, is able to transmit the bacteria that causes Lyme disease in humans in the USA. The main approach to tick control is the use of chemical acaricides and repellents, but known and potential tick resistance to these chemicals requires the discovery of new methods of control. Volcanic glass, Imergard, was recently developed to mimic the insecticide mode of action of the minerals from diatoms (diatomaceous earth, DE) for the cont

Since SARS-CoV-2 has caused unprecedented changes in the epidemiology of other infectious diseases, investigations on coinfection between SARS-CoV-2 and one of the famous vector-borne diseases, malaria, are crucial for disease control, especially in malaria-endemic areas. The clinical profiles, possible mechanisms for interactions, and representative control measures of COVID-19 and malaria coinfections have recently garnered public attention. The overlap in epidemiology, infection incubation, and clinical symptoms between COVID-19 and malaria coinfections has been thoroughly discussed to prov

As the most widespread viral infection transmitted by the Aedes mosquitoes, dengue has been estimated to cause 51 million febrile disease cases globally each year. Although sustained vector control remains key to reducing the burden of dengue, current understanding of the key factors that explain the observed variation in the short- and long-term vector control effectiveness across different transmission settings remains limited. We used a detailed individual-based model to simulate dengue transmission with and without sustained vector control over a 30-year time frame, under different transmi

Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of dengue fever virus (DENV) worldwide. Infusions made from organic materials have been shown to act as oviposition attractants for Ae. aegypti; however, studies on locally suitable infusion materials are lacking. The current study assessed the suitability of 4 locally available materials as oviposition infusions for use in surveillance and control of Ae. aegypti in Kwale County, Kenya. Oviposition infusion preferences were assessed in laboratory, semifield, and field conditions, using 4 infusions made from banana, grass, neem, and coconut. In addition, ovit

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection has recently affected 4 million people across the globe. The World Health Organization has declared Zika a "Public Health Emergency of International Concern". The disease is caused by an arbovirus and transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. Zika has followed a pattern already set in by Dengue and Chikungunya viruses. The virus exists in sylvatic form with spillovers to humans. The present outbreak in Brazil started in May 2015 and spread rapidly to Latin America and the Caribbean. The rapid spread is due to availability of non-immune population. The main concern of Zika is

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is the causative agent of an outbreak that began in La Réunion in 2005 and remains a major public health concern in India, Southeast Asia, and southern Europe. CHIKV is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes and the associated disease is characterized by fever, myalgia, arthralgia, and rash. As viral load in infected patients declines before the appearance of neutralizing antibodies, we studied the role of type I interferon (IFN) in CHIKV pathogenesis. Based on human studies and mouse experimentation, we show that CHIKV does not directly stimulate type I IFN production i

BACKGROUND: The ability of mosquitoes of the genus Aedes and its allies, such as Stegomyia, to transmit diseases such as dengue and yellow fever, makes them important in public health. This study aims to evaluate the use of the essential oil of Brazilian pepper in biological control of by assessing and quantifying the larvicidal effect against S. aegypti, the only available access to dengue control, and test its risk of genotoxicity with Salmonella typhimurium as an indicator of safety for its environmental use.
RESULTS: The density of the oil was 0.8622 g mL-1. Gas chromatography coupled wit

The renewed interest in malaria research and control is based on the intolerable toll this disease takes on young children and pregnant women in Africa and other vulnerable populations; 150 to 300 children die each hour from malaria amounting to 1 to 2 million deaths yearly. Malaria-induced neurologic impairment, anemia, hypoglycemia, and low birth weight imperil normal development and survival. Resistance of Plasmodium falciparum to drugs and Anopheles mosquitoes to insecticides has stimulated discovery and development of artemisinin-based combination treatments (ACTs) and other drugs, long-l

BACKGROUND: Pyrethroid resistance in Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (s.l.) is increasing across Nigeria and threatens the effectiveness of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and other pyrethroid-based interventions across Nigeria. This study quantified resistance levels, intensity, and metabolic contributions in An. gambiae s.l. populations across ecologically distinct zones of Oyo State, southwestern Nigeria, to generate evidence for locally tailored vector control strategies.
METHODS: Between May and September 2018, immature stages of Anopheles gambiae sensu lato were collected from six L

Leafhoppers (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) are significant agricultural pests worldwide, causing direct feeding injury and transmitting plant pathogens. Conventional management still relies heavily on insecticides, but resistance development, non-target effects, and environmental concerns increasingly limit their effectiveness. Recent progress in leveraging insect microbiomes for sustainable pest control, mostly in well-studied groups such as mosquitoes, whiteflies, and aphids, suggests that symbiotic manipulation could offer new tools. Whether such strategies can be developed for leafhoppers remai

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is endemic in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Province of Pakistan, and exploring its epidemiological status is critical for its control. The current study described the spatial occurrence of CL and its associated risk factors in KP. Records of 5123 confirmed CL patients obtained from 17 district hospitals for the year 2020 revealed that Khyber district hospital had the highest influx of CL patients, followed by North Waziristan and Mardan districts. Additionally, a questionnaire to assess CL risk factors was administered to the heads of 576 randomly selected households ac

Aedes aegypti is a major vector of arboviruses, including dengue, Zika, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Mayaro. The extensive use of insecticides has led to resistance, complicating vector control efforts. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are post-transcriptional regulators involved in detoxification and stress adaptation; however, their role in the insecticide response of Ae. aegypti remains unclear. This study analyzed miRNA expression in Ae. aegypti following imidacloprid exposure, comparing a field strain, Martinez de la Torre from Mexico (MT), and a susceptible reference strain, New Orleans (NO). Malaria, caused by Plasmodium parasites transmitted through Anopheles mosquitoes, remains a global health burden, particularly in tropical regions. The most lethal species, Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax, pose significant threats to human health. Despite various treatment strategies, malaria continues to claim lives, with Africa being disproportionately affected. This review explores the advancements in drug delivery systems for malaria treatment, focusing on polymeric and lipid-based nanoparticles. Traditional antimalarial drugs, while effective, face challenges such as toxicity a

Dengue virus (DENV) infection causes 390 million infections per year and 40,000 deaths globally. It is endemic in many countries in Asia, Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean, and Oceania. Dengue is endemic in Timor-Leste year-round, but peak transmission occurs during the rainy season. We briefly describe the epidemiology of DENV in the Municipality of Dili between 2018 and 2022. There were 6,234 cases notified, with a mean annual incidence rate of 330 cases per 100,000 population. There were 55 deaths (case fatality rate 0.9%). The peak annual incidence (3,904 cases) occurred in 2022 after an
