Relationships between brain tissue damage, oxygen desaturation, and disease severity in obstructive sleep apnea evaluated by diffusion tensor imaging.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) show brain injury in sites responsible for autonomic, cognitive, and respiratory functions. Brain changes in OSA may vary with disease severity as assessed by the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), which does not provide information about the apnea depth and length in contrast to oxygen desaturation. Although significant associations with brain injury and AHI are known in OSA, it is unclear whether AHI or the extent of oxygen desaturations better correlate with brain damage. We evaluated associations between brain changes, AHI, and oxygen …

Homocysteine is related to enlarged perivascular spaces in the brainstem in patients with isolated pontine infarction.

BACKGROUND: Homocysteine is correlated with several imaging features of cerebral small vessel disease including white matter hyperintensitie … ing EPVS in the basal ganglia (BG-EPVS), EPVS in the centrum semiovale, and EPVS in the midbrain or pons (brainstem-EPVS) were assessed using conventional magnetic resonance imaging. The relation between tHcy and EPVS of different parts in the brain was analyzed using univariate and multivariate regression model. RESULTS: A total of 227 patients were …

Analysis of the Clinical Features and Imaging Findings of Pontocerebellar Hypoplasia Type 2D Caused by Mutations in SEPSECS Gene.

Pontocerebellar hypoplasia type 2D (PCH2D) caused by SEPSECS gene mutations is very rare and only described in a few case reports. In this s … ealed progressive cerebellar atrophy followed by less pronounced cerebral atrophy, and there was no pons atrophy in LOPs. Most patients of PCH2D were severe early-onset, and a few were late-onset with milder symptoms. EOPs and LOPs shared some common clinical features and MRI findings, but also had their own characteristics.

Clinical and Molecular Findings of Autosomal Recessive Spastic Ataxia of Charlevoix Saguenay: an Iranian Case Series Expanding the Genetic and Neuroimaging Spectra.

Autosomal recessive spastic ataxia of Charlevoix Saguenay (ARSACS) is now increasingly identified from all countries over the world, possibl … all patients, brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed symmetric linear hypointensities in the pons (pontine stripes) and anterior superior cerebellar atrophy as well as a hyperintense rim around the thalami (thalamic rim). Encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis (EDAS) treatment of moyamoya syndrome: evaluation by computed tomography perfusion imaging.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the value of computed tomography perfusion (CTP) imaging for evaluating the efficacy of encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis (EDAS) treatment of moyamoya syndrome (MMS). METHODS: Forty-three patients with MMS (48 hemispheres) who received EDAS treatment were examined using CTP and DSA before and after surgery. CTP of the ipsilateral cortex, contralateral mirror area, and pons region were measured, and the relative cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and volume (rCBV), mean transit time (rMTT), and time-to-peak (rTTP) were calculated. Based on postoperative DSA, 48 hemispheres were app…

INTRODUCTION: Body lateropulsion (BLP) is seen in neurological lesions involving the pathways responsible for body position and verticality. We report a case of isolated body lateropulsion (iBLP) as the presentation of lateral medullary infarction and conducted a systematic literature review. METHODS: MEDLINE and EMBASE databases were searched up to December 3, 2020. INCLUSION CRITERIA: age ≥ 18, presence of BLP, confirmed stroke on imaging. EXCLUSION CRITERIA: age < 18, qualitative reviews, studies with inadequate patient data. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM® SPSS® Statistics…

Deformational changes after convection-enhanced delivery in the pediatric brainstem.

OBJECTIVE: In the brainstem, there are concerns regarding volumetric alterations following convection-enhanced delivery (CED). The relations … D infusion into the brainstem correlates with immediate but self-limited deformation changes in the pons. The persistence of increased ventricular volume and no need for CSF diversion post-CED are inconsistent with obstructive hydrocephalus. Defining the degree and time course of these deformational changes can assist in the interpretation of neuroimag …

Lack of astrocytes hinders parenchymal oligodendrocyte precursor cells from reaching a myelinating state in osmolyte-induced demyelination.

Demyelinated lesions in human pons observed after osmotic shifts in serum have been referred to as central pontine myelinolysis (CPM). Astrocytic damage, which is prominent in neuroinflammatory diseases like neuromyelitis optica (NMO) and multiple sclerosis (MS), is considered the primary event during formation of CPM lesions. Although more data on the effects of astrocyte-derived factors on oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) and remyelination are emerging, still little is known about remyelination of lesions with primary astrocytic loss. In autopsy tissue from patients with CPM as well as…

Brainstem pathology in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and primary lateral sclerosis: A longitudinal neuroimaging study.

BACKGROUND: Brainstem pathology is a hallmark feature of ALS, yet most imaging studies focus on cortical grey matter alterations and interna … m pathology. Using a Bayesian segmentation algorithm, the brainstem was segmented into the medulla, pons and mesencephalon to measure regional volume reductions, shape analyses were performed to ascertain the atrophy profile of each study group and region-of-interest morphometry was used to evaluate focal density alterations. Investigation of somatic CNVs in brains of synucleinopathy cases using targeted SNCA analysis and single cell sequencing.

Synucleinopathies are mostly sporadic neurodegenerative disorders of partly unexplained aetiology, and include Parkinson's disease (PD) and … ned genome-wide somatic CNV profiles from 169 cells from the substantia nigra of two MSA cases, and pons and putamen of one. These showed somatic CNVs in ~ 30% of cells, with clonality and origins in segmental duplications for some. CNVs had distinct profiles based on cell type, with neurons having a mix of gains and losses, and other cells having almo …

Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy and Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy-Related Inflammation: Comparison of Hemorrhagic and DWI MRI Features.
