[Treating bulimia nervosa: a nurse's experience using cognitive behavior therapy].

This paper focused on the experience of the authors in providing nursing care to a patient with bulimia nervosa who sought psychiatric assistance upon her first episode. The nursing period spanned a period from April 21, 2008 to June 16, 2008. After primary diagnosis, relevant data was collected by observation, interview, and a review of medical records. The patient's disease was assessed from five dimensions. Care problems faced for this patient included: altered nutrition profile, abnormal eating patterns, ineffective individual coping, and body image disturbance. The authors adopted a three

Oppositional defiant disorder: Evidence-based review of behavioral treatment programs.

BACKGROUND: Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a common clinical condition seen among children and adolescents in behavioral health settings. In this article, we review behavioral treatment programs and their clinical use in managing ODD. METHODS: We searched PubMed, PsycInfo, and Scopus from 2000 to 2020 using the terms "oppositional defiant disorder" and "treatment." We found 1,665 articles, including clinical trials, review articles, and case control studies of evidence-based ODD treatments in patients age <18. Articles were screened to identify literature focusing on evidence-based be

Like parent, like child: parent and child emotion dysregulation.

PURPOSE: This study examined the association between children's emotion regulatory processes and parents' emotional problems. DESIGN: A 5-year longitudinal study of families from Northwestern United States with data collected over 3 time points. Families were recruited in an effort to oversample for multiracial and African American families because these families have historically not been well represented in research studies. METHOD: Parental hostility characteristics and subclinical levels of depression were assessed in combination with teachers' reports of children's externalizing and int

Behavioral disinhibition: liability for externalizing spectrum disorders and its genetic and environmental relation to response inhibition across adolescence.

Behavioral disinhibition has been characterized as a generalized vulnerability to externalizing disorders. Despite increasing evidence for its validity and heritability, the structural stability of behavioral disinhibition across adolescence and the strength and etiology of its relation to executive functions have not been studied. In this multivariate twin study, the authors assessed behavioral disinhibition using measures tapping substance use, conduct disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and novelty seeking at ages 12 and 17. Executive functions were assessed with labo

The impact of individual forms of childhood maltreatment on health behavior.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines the unique contribution of five types of maltreatment (sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, physical neglect, emotional neglect) to adult health behaviors as well as the additive impact of exposure to different types of childhood maltreatment. METHOD: Two hundred and twenty-one women recruited from a VA primary care clinic completed questionnaires assessing exposure to childhood trauma and adult health behaviors. Regression models were used to test the relationship between childhood maltreatment and adult health behaviors. RESULTS: Sexual and physical

Sex differences in referral rates of children with gender identity disorder: some hypotheses.

From 1978 through 1995, a sex ratio of 6.6:1 of boys to girls (N = 275) was observed for children referred to a specificity clinic for gender identity disorder. This article attempts to evaluate several hypotheses regarding the marked sex disparity in referral rates. The sexes did not differ on four demographic variables (age at referral, IQ, and parent's social class and marital status) and on five indices of general behavior problems on the Child Behavior Checklist; in addition, there was only equivocal evidence that boys with gender identity disorder had significantly poorer peer relations

Social perspective-taking and adjustment in emotionally disturbed, learning-disabled, and normal children.

Preadolescent emotionally disturbed, learning-disabled, and normal boys were compared on social perspective-taking and behavioral measures to examine possible contributions of social cognitive deficits to children's adjustment problems. Antisocial-prosocial and withdrawn-gregarious behavior dimensions were studied through subscales derived from teacher ratings. Results indicated that across all groups, high perspective-taking was associated with significantly less withdrawal than was low perspective-taking; within groups, this finding was significant only for the emotionally disturbed boys. The Effects of a Teacher-Implemented Video-Enhanced Activity Schedule Intervention on the Mathematical Skills and Collateral Behaviors of Students with Autism.

This study used a multiple probe design to evaluate the effects of a teacher-implemented video-schedule intervention on the mathematical skills and untargeted challenging behaviors of five elementary-school students with autism. Results indicated that the intervention was effective in improving participants' academic performance, and a decrease in the level of challenging behaviors and stereotypy was observed for participants following the introduction of intervention. Additionally, academic gains generalized across academic problems and to a small group setting, suggesting that this technolog

Network Research Experiences in New York and Eastern Europe: Lessons for the Southern US in Understanding HIV Transmission Dynamics.

PURPOSE: This paper presents an overview of different kinds of risk and social network methods and the kinds of research questions each can address. RECENT FINDINGS: It also reviews what network research has discovered about how network characteristics are associated with HIV and other infections, risk behaviors, preventive behaviors, and care, and discusses some ways in which network-based public health interventions have been conducted. Based on this, risk and social network research and interventions seem both feasible and valuable for addressing the many public health and social problems

Unique associations between peer relations and social anxiety in early adolescence.

This study examined the unique associations between feelings of social anxiety and multiple dimensions of peer relations (positive peer nominations, peer- and self-reported peer victimization, and self-reported friendship quality) among 383 sixth- and seventh-grade students. Hierarchical regression analysis provided evidence for the unique contribution made by peer relations to social anxiety above that made by adolescents' individual vulnerabilities (i.e., teacher ratings of social behavior, self-reported social appraisals assessed by hypothetical vignettes). Two subgroups of socially anxious

Recognizing and responding to a suicide crisis.

Data from therapists who were treating 26 patients when they committed suicide were utilized to identify signs that warned of a suicide crisis. Three factors were identified as markers of the suicide crisis: a precipitating event; one or more intense affective states other than depression; and at least one of three behavioral patterns: speech or actions suggesting suicide, deterioration in social or occupational functioning, and increased substance abuse. Problems in communication between patient and therapist were identified as factors interfering with crisis recognition. Evaluation of the id

Use of the Child Behavior Checklist and DSM-III-R diagnosis in predicting outcome of children's social skills training.

A standardized 12-week cognitive-behavioral social skills package in which parents assisted children with socialization homework assignments, was presented to 52 nonpsychotic outpatient boys, many of whom were diagnosed with DSM-III-R Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder and Oppositional Defiant Disorder. Results demonstrated that the Thought Problems factor of the mother-completed Child Behavior Checklist aided in predicting changes in teacher-rated aggression. DSM-III-R diagnosis of Oppositional Defiant Disorder predicted changes in teacher-rated withdrawal subsequent to treatment. The n

Manifest sadomasochism of males: results of an empirical study.

Two hundred forty-five manifestly sadomasochistic West German completed an anonymous questionnaires concerning their sexual behavior and psychosocial problems. They were reached as placers of sadomasochistic contact advertisements or as members of sadomasochistic clubs. Thirty percent were exclusively heterosexually oriented, 31% bisexually oriented, and 38% homosexually oriented. Results are described with respect to the invisibility of deviant behavior, seeking of partners, participation in the subculture, realization of the deviant desires, self-acceptance, preferences for sadomasochistic r

Prevalence, putative mechanisms, and current management of sleep problems during chemotherapy for cancer.

Sleep problems are highly prevalent in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. This article reviews existing evidence on etiology, associated symptoms, and management of sleep problems associated with chemotherapy treatment during cancer. It also discusses limitations and methodological issues of current research. The existing literature suggests that subjectively and objectively measured sleep problems are the highest during the chemotherapy phase of cancer treatments. A possibly involved mechanism reviewed here includes the rise in the circulating proinflammatory cytokines and the associate

Menstrual-related problems and psychological distress among women in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations of menstrual-related problems with mental health and health behaviors in a U.S. population-based study. METHODS: We analyzed data obtained from women aged 18-55 years (n = 11,648) who participated in the 2002 National Health Interview Survey, an ongoing, computer-assisted personal interview of the noninstitutionalized U.S. population. RESULTS: Approximately 19% of women aged 18-55 years reported experiencing menstrual-related problems (e.g., heavy bleeding, bothersome cramping, or premenstrual syndrome [PMS]). These women were significantly more likely

Do I Have ADHD? Diagnosis of ADHD in Adulthood and Its Mimics in the Neurology Clinic.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder that causes difficulties with sustained attention, executive functioning, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and/or emotional regulation. Although many people are diagnosed with ADHD in childhood, others seek diagnosis in adulthood. Many adults have already reviewed available clinical scales or screening tools for ADHD and are referred for evaluation of attention problems by their primary care providers. Key features of the history and examination in a clinic visit can differentiate ADHD from other causes of att

Mapping the developmental pathways of child conduct problems through the neurobiology of empathy.

The notion that antisocial behavior reflects failures of empathy has a long history in the clinical literature, yet only recently has evidence emerged to support neuroscientific accounts of empathy and the development of child conduct problems. Much of this evidence has come from research into callous-unemotional traits, which correspond to the affective component of psychopathy and therefore encompass deficits in empathy within a broader cluster of emotional impairments. In this review we integrate current evidence concerning the biobehavioral bases of empathy and callous-unemotional traits,

Disordered eating and alcohol use among college women: associations with race and big five traits.

Excessive alcohol use and disordered eating are considerable health-related problems among college women. The purpose of the present study was to examine how specific patterns of disordered eating (i.e., anorexia, bulimia, binge eating) are related to alcohol use and related problems and the influence of racial group membership and Big Five personality traits on the co-occurrence of these behaviors. Participants were 153 undergraduate women. Results indicated that White women reported more binge drinking, alcohol-related problems, disordered eating, anorexia nervosa symptoms, and bulimia nervo

Brief communication: cognitive rehabilitation of executive functioning in a case of craniopharyngioma.

Craniopharyngiomas are rare brain tumors within the area of the craniopharyngeal duct. They are often diagnosed in children and young people and can be associated with significant cognitive impairments such as memory and executive problems. This single-case report describes a brief investigation into the effectiveness of goal management training for dysexecutive problems following the removal and treatment of a craniopharyngioma in a young woman. In contrast to previous laboratory-based studies, we exploited naturally occurring distractions within the patient's work environment as periodic ale
