Our purpose was to compare the absorption of iron bisglycinate and ferrous calcium citrate in volunteers using an oral iron tolerance test. Twenty volunteers, 10 healthy controls and 10 with stable Crohn's disease, agreed to participate in the study. All were given 50 mg of elemental iron as iron bisglycinate or ferrous calcium citrate. Plasma ionized calcium (IC) and parathyroid hormone (PTH) concentrations were measured in 31 osteoporotic postmenopausal women at hourly intervals for 5 hours after a 1 g oral calcium load. Fifteen subjects had normal radiocalcium absorption and 16 subjects were malabsorbers of calcium. The iron metabolism has been studied in 11 patients with porphyria cutanea tarda. Despite significantly increased amounts of iron in the serum and liver, the porphyria patients absorb not less but significantly more radioiron than normal controls. OBJECTIVE: To investigate indices of calcium (Ca) homeostasis in celiac disease (CD).
METHODS: Urinary Ca excretion rate, intestinal absorption of strontium (Sr) (used as index of intestinal Ca absorption), and other variables related to these end points were measured in newly diagnosed, untreated adult patients (n = 32) with overt and subclinical CD and compared with those of healthy controls (n = 27). Using a previously reported in vivo intestinal perfusion model in the rat, we have shown that net total ammonium absorption accounts for the majority of the acid load resulting from urinary intestinal diversion.
