Tricho-rhino-phalangeal syndrome (TRPS) is a rare malformation syndrome characterized by distinctive facial, ectodermal, and skeletal features. TRPS is divided into TRPS type I/III caused by pathogenic variants in TRPS1 and TRPS type II caused by contiguous gene deletions also spanning EXT1 and RAD21. Due to its rarity, knowledge of the clinical course of TRPS remains limited. Therefore, we collected and characterized a case series of 15 TRPS type I patients (median age at diagnosis 15 [interquartile range: 10-18] years, 11 females [73%]) seen at Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark, with a med

BACKGROUND: Diabetic cheiroarthropathy, also known as limited joint mobility, is one of the long-standing complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). It affects 8-50% of patients with type 1 diabetes and is also seen in type 2 diabetic patients. Consequently, it can mimic many rheumatological diseases and is often underdiagnosed. The authors present a case of a long-standing poorly controlled diabetes with diabetic cheiroarthropathy and diabetic neuropathy, along with positive ANA in the absence of any correlated autoimmune or rheumatological diseases.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old fem

INTRODUCTION: 2p15p16.1 microdeletion syndrome was described for the first time in 2007. The size of the microdeletion is variable and encompasses several genes, like XPO1, USP34, BCL11A, REL, PAPOLG, PEX13, COMMD1, B3GNT2, and EHBP1. Features of the syndrome include short stature, microcephaly, hypotonia, psychomotor developmental delay, anomalies of the fingers of the upper and lower limbs, dysmorphic features like receding forehead, broad nasal bridge, telecanthus, ptosis, flat philtrum, small mouth with a high, narrow palate and everted lower lip. The precise genotype-phenotype correlation

BACKGROUND: The clinical screening of enthesitis and synovitis in patients with psoriasis lacks specificity and sensitivity during the preclinical phase.
AIMS: to assess US subclinical synovitis and enthesitis in psoriatic patients compared with healthy controls.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study on 40 psoriatic patients and 40 healthy sex- and age-matched controls. US examination of 18 joints was performed along with 22 entheseal sites on the upper and lower limbs. US subscores were established according to the US abnormalities: inflammatory score (tendon thickening, hypoechogenicity, bursit

OBJECTIVE: Observational studies have linked occupational standing or walking to musculoskeletal pain. These prior studies, however, are flawed as few accounted for physical exertion; a potential confounder that accompanies many standing-based occupations. The purpose of this study was to examine the individual and joint associations of occupational standing/walking and exertion with musculoskeletal symptoms.
METHODS: Data for this analysis come from the 2015 National Health Interview Survey, a US nationally representative survey. Occupational standing/walking and exertion were assessed by se

BACKGROUND: Complicated spinal cord injury occurs in 1-5 cases per 100.000. In children, cervical trauma makes up 72% of all spinal trauma. Spinal cord injury complicates vertebral trauma in 25-50% of cases that usually results severe disability. Rehabilitation of these patients is usually ineffective or results a little improvement. Restoration of even minimal movements is essential in these patients. There are reports devoted to surgical rehabilitation of important hand functions after cervical spinal cord injury.
OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the restoration of key hand functions in patients w

Prosthetic arms should restore and extend the capabilities of someone with an amputation. They should move naturally and be able to perform elegant, coordinated movements that approximate those of a biological arm. Despite these objectives, the control of modern-day prostheses is often nonintuitive and taxing. Existing devices and control approaches do not yet give users the ability to effect highly synergistic movements during their daily-life control of a prosthetic device. As a step towards improving the control of prosthetic arms and hands, we introduce an intuitive approach to training a

OBJECTIVES: Little is known regarding the association between ultrasound-determined pathological synovial blood flow and synovial pathology in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We therefore examined the association between colour Doppler ultrasound imaging and synovitis assessed by histopathology and specific cell markers by immunohistochemistry in patients with RA.
METHODS: 81 synovial sites from wrist and finger joints from 29 RA patients were evaluated by ultrasound colour Doppler and subsequently biopsied by needle arthroscopy. The association between ultrasound colour fraction and an overall sy…

BACKGROUND: Callotasis of the hand has several advantages: it is less invasive than other techniques as bone grafting is unnecessary, gradual distraction is possible, joint mobilization can be performed during treatment, and sensation is maintained. Disadvantages include longer period of treatment and perhaps the need for complicated and bulky instrumentation.
METHODS: We reported results of the lengthening of eight traumatically shortened metacarpals or phalanges (in six patients). There were two men and four women, with a mean age of 17.5 years. There were one thumb and seven fingers. There

OBJECTIVE: Aim of the procedure is shifting the arc of shoulder rotation for an improved external rotation, reaching a physiological elbow flexion without striking of the lower arm against the thorax; improvement of the activities of daily living because guidance of the hand to the face is possible without any simultaneous evasive movements of the shoulder.
INDICATIONS: Palsy of infraspinatus and teres minor muscles after complete neurosurgical therapy (neurolysis, reconstruction of the brachial plexus), which leads to loss of external rotation and an internally rotating posture of the arm. E

BACKGROUND: Trapeziometacarpal (TMC) osteoarthritis can be painful and cause disability for patients. Total joint replacement of the TMC joint provides a pseudo arthrosis with good restoration of the thumb motion and pain relief in most patients. But there is also a risk of no improvement following the operation. The purpose of this study was to identify patients at risk of no clinically important improvement following operative treatment of osteoarthritis of the TMC joint.
METHODS: We included 287 consecutive patients (225 women, 62 men) treated with total joint replacement of the TMC joint

OBJECTIVE: DIP joint OA is common but has few cost-effective, evidence-based interventions. Pain and deformity [radial or ulnar deviation of the joint or loss of full extension (extension lag)] frequently lead to functional and cosmetic issues. We investigated whether splinting the DIP joint would improve pain, function and deformity.
METHODS: A prospective, radiologist-blinded, non-randomized, internally controlled trial of custom splinting of the DIP joint was carried out. Twenty-six subjects with painful, deforming DIP joint hand OA gave written, informed consent. One intervention joint an

We assessed pollicizations performed by one surgeon; compared function of the pollicized digit in patients with and without forearm/wrist anomalies; and determined if hand function changed with age. A total of 42 hands were assessed an average of 5.7 years post-operatively, 21 with a forearm/wrist anomaly (Group 1) and 21 without (Group 2). Fourteen patients with 16 pollicizations were assessed on two occasions 3.5 years apart. Carpometacarpal joint motion was near normal in both groups (decreased retropulsion in Group 1). Metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joint flexion, grip, thumb late

PURPOSE: Injections into the palmar hand for trigger finger, palmar flexor tenosynovitis, and Dupuytren contracture can be very painful. This randomized, controlled study evaluated nerve block anesthesia at the wrist for prevention of procedural pain associated with painful injection of the palmar hand.
METHODS: Forty-seven corticosteroid injections for trigger fingers in 19 individuals were randomized to (1) anesthesia consisting of median and ulnar nerve block with 1% lidocaine anesthesia followed by standard injection or (2) standard injection alone using the 1-needle 2-syringe technique c

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the functional outcome after extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL) transfer for restoration of finger flexion in patients with flexor muscle loss after direct trauma.
METHODS: We evaluated 8 patients who had ECRL transfer between 1995 and 2003. Flexion gained was assessed by measuring the digit-to-palm distance (DPD). The grip strength was compared with that of the opposite normal limb. The average follow-up period was 41 months. We compared the results obtained with other modalities of restoration of finger flexion, namely a pedicled latissimu
