This is a case of an adolescent with kyphoscoliosis due to congenital partially segmented vertebrae T12, L1, L2 who was treated operatively by a back-front-back, one stage operation. A 16 year old patient neurologically intact with a rounded gibbous in the lower thoracic region and a mild scoliotic element had no other congenital anomaly. His kyphotic deformity was 85 degrees measured with the Cobb method. The goal of this pilot study was to explore the relationship between pelvic obliquity and patient pain, sitting tolerance, pressure sores, and function. In our rehabilitation centre, the treatment of Scheuermann's disease consists of a daily postural education, lasting several hours. As for pain therapy, we mainly apply physiotherapeutic methods with osteopathy, manual therapy, Mc Kenzie and Brügger. In addition, we offer psychological help for pain relief. This paper describes work being undertaken as part of the IERAPSI (Integrated Environment for the Rehearsal and Panning of Surgical Intervention) project. The project is focussing on surgery for the petrous bone, and brings together a consortium of European clinicians and technology providers working in this field. The paper presents the results of a comprehensive user task analysis that has been carried out in the first phase of the IERAPSI project, and details the current status of development of a pre operative planning environment and a physically-based surgical simulator.
