[Yellow fever prevention and control: assessment of surveillance activities in a previously unaffected area in Brazil].

Following the reemergence of yellow fever in 2014/2015, Brazil recorded its largest yellow fever epidemic in recent decades, mainly affecting the country's Southeast region. Yellow fever is a hemorrhagic viral disease caused by a flavivirus transmitted by sylvatic mosquitos (Haemagogus; Sabethes). In the urban cycle, eradicated in Brazil since 1942, the virus is transmitted by Aedes aegypti. Nonhuman primates are the principal hosts of the virus and constitute "sentinels" in yellow fever surveillance. This article describes the control and prevention activities launched during the yellow fever

CYP6P9-Driven Signatures of Selective Sweep of Metabolic Resistance to Pyrethroids in the Malaria Vector Anopheles funestus Reveal Contemporary Barriers to Gene Flow.

Pyrethroid resistance in major malaria vectors such as Anopheles funestus threatens malaria control efforts in Africa. Cytochrome P450-mediated metabolic resistance is best understood for CYP6P9 genes in southern Africa in An. funestus. However, we do not know if this resistance mechanism is spreading across Africa and how it relates to broader patterns of gene flow across the continent. Nucleotide diversity of the CYP6P9a gene and the diversity pattern of five gene fragments spanning a region of 120 kb around the CYP6P9a gene were surveyed in mosquitoes from southern, eastern and central Afri

Characterisation of the cerebrospinal fluid of horses with West Nile virus neuroinvasive disease.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a zoonotic arbovirus transmitted by mosquitoes between wild birds (natural hosts) and other vertebrates. Horses and humans are incidental, dead-end hosts, but can develop severe neurological disorders. Owing to the close contact of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) with the extracellular fluid of the brain, the analysis of CSF composition can reflect central nervous system (CNS) impairments enabling the diagnosis and understanding of various neurodegenerative CNS disorders. Our objective was to compare the findings from the CSF samples of horses with neuroinvasive WNV infectio

Advancing vector biology research: a community survey for future directions, research applications and infrastructure requirements.

Vector-borne pathogens impact public health, animal production, and animal welfare. Research on arthropod vectors such as mosquitoes, ticks, sandflies, and midges which transmit pathogens to humans and economically important animals is crucial for development of new control measures that target transmission by the vector. While insecticides are an important part of this arsenal, appearance of resistance mechanisms is increasingly common. Novel tools for genetic manipulation of vectors, use of Wolbachia endosymbiotic bacteria, and other biological control mechanisms to prevent pathogen transmis

Land cover variation and West Nile virus prevalence: patterns, processes, and implications for disease control.

Identifying links between environmental variables and infectious disease risk is essential to understanding how human-induced environmental changes will effect the dynamics of human and wildlife diseases. Although land cover change has often been tied to spatial variation in disease occurrence, the underlying factors driving the correlations are often unknown, limiting the applicability of these results for disease prevention and control. In this study, we described associations between land cover composition and West Nile virus (WNV) infection prevalence, and investigated three potential proc

Silent transmission of virus during a Dengue epidemic, Nakhon Pathom Province, Thailand 2001.

In the year 2001 a large dengue fever (DF)/dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) outbreak occurred in Nakhon Pathom Province, Thailand. Three thousand one hundred twelve cases of DHF were reported, an attack rate of 393 per 100,000 population. The Nakhon Pathom Provincial Health Office immediately carried out a control action according to WHO recommendations. Active serological surveys and viral RNA isolation were carried out to detect silent transmission of dengue virus in 329 healthy volunteers in Nakhon Pathom Province subdistricts where the dengue epidemic had the highest rate of infection of 2.5

Systematics of malaria vectors with particular reference to the Anopheles punctulatus group.

The appearance of groups and complexes of closely related cryptic or sibling species in many of the anopheline taxa has impeded studies on malaria transmission and the evaluation of control strategies which have relied on morphological characters to identify the vector species involved. The advantages of morphological identification are low cost, speed and simplicity, which allow large numbers of specimens to be processed rapidly in the field. The need for accurate identification is crucial, as time and money may be wasted in studying and controlling species of no medical importance. Various t

Confronting the Multidimensional Challenges of Research in the Context of Emerging Infectious Diseases in Brazil: The Example of Yellow Fever.

In the most recent Brazilian yellow fever (YF) outbreak, a group of clinicians and researchers initiated in mid-January 2018 a considerable effort to develop a multicenter randomized controlled clinical trial to evaluate the effect of sofosbuvir on YF viremia and clinical outcomes (Brazilian Clinical Trials Registry: RBR-93dp9n). The approval of this protocol had urgency given the seasonal/short-lived pattern of YF transmission, large number of human cases, and epidemic transmission at the outskirts of a large urban center. However, many intricacies in the research regulatory and ethical submi

Risk factors for malaria infection among rubber tappers living in a malaria control program area in southern Thailand.

Rubber tappers work begins at midnight during the feeding time of Anopheles maculatus and An. minimus, two common malaria vectors in southern Thailand. We studied the association between rubber tapper behavior and malaria infections as reported to the Notified Disease Surveillance System during 2010 in Prachuab Khiri Khan Province, Thailand. In that province insecticide treated bednets are distributed free to the population and insecticide residual spraying is performed annually. A random sample of 394 rubber tapper households was interviewed from October 2010 to May 2011. Twenty-six household

Successful integration of insecticide-treated bed net distribution with mass drug administration in Central Nigeria.

In Africa anopheline mosquitoes transmit malaria and lymphatic filariasis (LF); insecticide-treated bed nets significantly reduce transmission of both. Insecticide-treated bed net provision to children under 5 (U5) and pregnant women (PW) is a major goal of malaria control initiatives, but use in Africa remains low because of cost and logistics. We therefore integrated insecticide-treated bed net distribution with the 2004 LF/onchocerciasis mass drug administration (MDA) program in Central Nigeria. Community volunteers distributed 38,600 insecticide-treated bed nets, while simultaneously treat

Hospital-based study of severe malaria and associated deaths in Myanmar.

The present study identifies factors that contribute to malaria deaths in township hospitals reporting large numbers of such deaths in Myanmar. Between July and December 1995, we identified a total of 101 patients with severe and complicated malaria by screening the cases admitted to hospital with a primary diagnosis of falciparum malaria. Unrousable coma and less marked impairment of consciousness with or without other severe malaria complications, in contrast to severe malaria anaemia, were associated with all malaria deaths. Adult patients with severe malaria were 2.8 times more likely to d

Time-Varying Effects of Meteorological Variables on Malaria Epidemiology in the Context of Interrupted Control Efforts in the Amazon Rainforest, 2000-2017.

Successful malaria control interventions, mostly based on the training of health workers, distribution of insecticide-treated nets, and spraying, decrease malaria incidence; however, when these interventions are interrupted, a resurgence may occur. In the Peruvian Amazon, after discontinuing the control activities implemented by the PAMAFRO project (2006-2010)-a Global Fund-sponsored project for the strengthening of malaria control and surveillance in multiple countries in Latin America- malaria cases re-emerged dramatically. In parallel, meteorological factors determine the conditions suitabl

Rift Valley fever: current challenges and future prospects.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a zoonotic, mosquito-borne viral disease that affects human health and causes significant losses in the livestock industry. Recent outbreaks have led to severe human infections with high mortality rates. There are many challenges to applying effective preventive and control measures, including weak infrastructure of health facilities, lack of capacity and support systems for field logistics and communication, access to global expert organizations, and insufficient information on the epidemiological and reservoir status of the RVF virus. The health systems in East Afr

Chitosan-coated lipid nanocarriers co-delivering curcumin and α-terpinene with enhanced larvicidal activity against Cx. pipiens via oxidative stress.

The escalating global burden of mosquito-borne diseases, transmitted primarily by vectors such as Cx. pipiens, emphasizes the critical need for innovative and ecologically sustainable control agents. Addressing this challenge, this study focused on the synthesis and characterization of dual drug nanostructure lipid carrier loaded with natural compounds of curcumin and α-terpinene incorporated in lipid matrix (NLC-CA) and its chitosan-coated nanoformulation (NLC-CA@CS) for their effect as eco-friendly control of Cx. pipiens. Insights and implications of a dynamical systems approach to dengue transmission and epidemic behaviour.

This study introduces a novel dynamical systems framework to investigate the transmission dynamics and epidemic behaviour of dengue fever, offering a deeper understanding of the disease beyond conventional models. While most existing research focuses on basic transmission, this work fills a critical gap by integrating comprehensive stability analysis, bifurcation dynamics, and parameter sensitivity, without relying on control-based strategies. A detailed seven-compartment SEIR-SEI model was developed using nonlinear ordinary differential equations to simulate the interactions between human and

West Nile Virus human cases in Türkiye in 2024.

Human cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) infection have been reported since 2010 in Türkiye, with seasonal outbreaks occurring almost annually. Enhanced surveillance has been in place since 2011. The early detection of WNV infection is crucial for obtaining and delivering appropriate samples for accurate diagnosis, initiating proper treatment, conducting contact tracing and ensuring the early detection and control of outbreaks. This study aims to evaluate the increase in WNV cases reported in Türkiye in 2024, following a four-year period with no reported cases. All confirmed cases of WNV in indivi

Oral susceptibility to ivermectin is over fifty times greater in a wild population of Anopheles albimanus mosquitoes from Belize than the STECLA laboratory reference strain of this mosquito.

BACKGROUND: The STECLA strain of Anopheles albimanus has been in continuous colony for many years and is the reference strain on which genomic studies for the species are based. Recently, the STECLA strain was demonstrated to be much less susceptible to ivermectin ingested in a blood meal (4-day LC50 of 1468 ng/ml) than all other Anopheles species tested to-date (LC50 values range from 7 to 56 ng/ml). The ability of An. albimanus to survive ingestion of ivermectin at concentrations far beyond that typically found in the blood of ivermectin-treated people or livestock (i.e., 30-70 ng/ml) could
