PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficiency of an arthroscopic suturing technique for stabilizing anteriorly displaced discs in patients with internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) by magnetic resonance (MR) imaging.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Six hundred thirty-nine patients (764 joints) diagnosed as having stages II to V of internal derangement were treated with arthroscopic disc repositioning and suturing from August 2004 to March 2007. Consecutive MR images were used to evaluate internal derangement before and approximately 1 to 7 days after the operation for all 639 patients. The d

Calcifying fibrous pseudotumor is an extremely rare benign lesion that develops in the pleura. We describe a case of multiple lesions in the pleura. The patient is a 52-year-old woman who had a subpleural mass on chest roentgenogram. The diagnosis was established by percutaneous needle biopsy. The largest tumor was hanging down from the parietal pleura, and additional small nodules were disseminated throughout the pleural cavity. Only a few tumors arising from the largest one were resected, and the others were left unresected. The resected tumors consisted of collagenous fibrous tissue, calcif

A 54-year-old man was admitted to our hospital to be operated on for inguinal hernia, but complained of dry cough and cervical lymph nodes swelling after traveling to California in the United States. The chest X-ray films taken on admission showed consolidations in both lungs. The laboratory data revealed an increase in white blood cell counts with eosinophilia, and elevated ESR, IgE and beta-D-glucan. The biopsied lung specimen by VATS showed epithelioid granulomas consisting of giant cells and eosinophils. In addition, spherulitic forms filled with endopores were detected in the specimen. A

BACKGROUND: Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) is used for the diagnosis and treatment of some mediastinal lesions. However, large-size tumours are usually approached by thoracotomy or sternotomy. We report our experience of a full thoracoscopic approach for bulky intrathoracic lesions.
METHODS: From November 2002 to March 2007, 14 patients with a bulky intrathoracic mass were referred for resection. The study group consisted of eight females and six males with a mean age of 44 years (range: 13-74). We defined as bulky a mass with a minimal cross-sectional diameter equal to or larger than

A variety of invasive staging tests are available, including mediastinoscopy, thoracoscopy (video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery), transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA), transthoracic needle aspiration (TTNA), and endoscopic ultrasound with fine needle aspiration (EUS-NA). Each of these tests requires specific skills, has particular risks, and has technical considerations making it more or less suitable for masses in particular locations. Therefore, direct comparisons among the tests are not possible, and the issue is to define which procedure is most useful for a particular situation. Invas

On the basis of an experience with 1800 operations of endovideosurgical hernioplasty in patients with inguinal and femoral hernias, the authors analyze the frequency and character of complications after such operations. Complications were noted in 37 (2.05%) patients. The most frequent complication was injury of the vessels. It could be liquidated in all the cases using laparoscopic technology. In three cases hollow organs were injured. In these cases laparotomy was used. The laparoscopic hernioplasty, if all details are fulfilled thoroughly, is a minimally invasive and effective method of tre

Diagnosis of pleural effusion is difficult in children. The etiologies are numerous; however, infectious agents are more frequent. Thoracocentesis proves to be the first-line diagnostic tool. Light's criteria are the best for distinguishing whether the effusion is a transudate or an exudate. If the patient has an exudative pleural effusion, other tests are indicated to determine the etiology and in some cases the treatment: macroscopic appearance, cytology and differential white cell count (level of glucose, lactate dehydrogenase, adenosine deaminase, pH, bacterial cultures). Others investigat

Since 1995, video-assisted thoracoscopic oesophagectomy (VATS), according the same surgical principles as the Japanese open surgery, has been completed in 700 patients with oesophageal cancer. Our indication for VATS is (I) no extensive pleural adhesion; (II) no contiguous tumor spread; (III) pulmonary function capable of sustaining single-lung ventilation, and (IV) non radiated patients. We use 4 ports around a 5 cm mini-thoracotomy on 5th intercostal space. We laid emphasis on utilizing magnifying effect of video (5 to 20 magnifications), obtained by positioning the camera at close vicinity

OBJECTIVE: Current intraoperative navigation systems have shown significant effectiveness for organs with fixed shapes, but they struggle to adapt to the challenges of tissue deformation and displacement in gastrointestinal surgeries. This study evaluates the established YOLOv8 and the emerging YOLOv12 with enhanced feature extraction capabilities, aiming to identify an optimal real-time model for dynamic surgical scenarios to improve procedural efficiency and safety.
METHODS: In this multi-center retrospective study, object detection and instance segmentation was achieved by training YOLOv8

VATS (video assisted thoracoscopic surgery) is routinely and successfully performed in minor and major complex thoracic procedures. This technique has been recently introduced for the treatment of severe forms of idiopathic scoliosis (IS) with the aim to repair the deformity, reduce morbidity and to prevent its progression in patients with skeletal immaturity. This study aims to present VATS in anterior vertebral body tethering (AVBT) approach to support the pediatric orthopedic surgeons during vertebral body fixation. Surgical and anesthesiologic tips and tricks are reported to assure a safe

Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) has proven effective for intraoperative verification of RLN function in the conventional thyroid surgery. However, no studies have performed a systematic evidence-based assessment of this novel health technology in endoscopic and robotic thyroidectomy. Evidence-based criteria were used in a systematic review of relevant literature for years 2000-2015. Four electronic databases (CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Cochrane and EMBASE) were used to retrieve relevant reports published from January 1, 2000 to September 1, 2016. The search terms included "endoscopic thyroidectom

Two patients presented with sciatica-like pain caused by thoracic disk herniation. Sciatica-like pain was the initial and major symptom in both patients, but careful neurological examination showed vague signs of upper motor neuron disturbance, and thoracic magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed disk herniations at the mid-thoracic level. After video-assisted thoracoscopic discectomy, the pain was completely improved. Thorough neurological examination and MR imagery of the thoracic spine, and if needed, even the cervical spine, are required if lumbar image findings do not correlate with the
