A robust and generalized framework in diabetes classification across heterogeneous environments.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) represents a major global health challenge, affecting a diverse range of demographic populations across all age groups. It has particular implications for women during pregnancy and the postpartum period. The contemporary prevalence of sedentary lifestyle patterns and suboptimal dietary practices has substantially contributed to the escalating incidence of this metabolic disorder. The timely identification of diabetes mellitus (DM) in the female population is crucial for preventing related complications and facilitating the implementation of effective therapeutic interve

Validation of Lawrence and Botte classification of proximal fifth metatarsal fractures.

BACKGROUND: The Lawrence and Botte (LB) classification of proximal fifth metatarsal fractures guides clinical management, yet its reliability has been sparsely evaluated. This study investigated intra- and inter-rater reliability of the LB system among trained observers. METHODS: A retrospective chart review identified patients with proximal fifth metatarsal fractures. Deidentified radiographs (AP, lateral, oblique) were reviewed by two orthopedic surgeons and one radiologist. Each observer classified fractures using the LB system in two surveys separated by at least two weeks. Identical radi…

[Penile carcinoma: the importance of histological classification and new treatment strategies].

Penile carcinoma is a rare malignancy, predominantly derived from squamous epithelium, with a partially aggressive clinical course. The 2022 WHO classification distinguishes HPV-associated (HPV(+)) and HPV-independent (HPV(-)) subtypes, a differentiation that bears significant prognostic and therapeutic implications. HPV(-) carcinomas often develop as result of chronic inflammation, e.g. lichen sclerosus. While HPV(+) tumours, such as the warty subtype, often exhibit an indolent course, basaloid and sarcomatoid variants are associated with poor prognosis and an increased risk of metastasis. The…

Anterior Sternoclavicular Joint Dislocation Classification and Management: A Review of the Literature.

» Closed reduction and physical therapy are the primary approaches for most acute anterior sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) dislocations, with acceptable outcomes for low-demand patients. However, these treatments have a high rate of recurrent instability, albeit with minimal functional impact.» Persistently symptomatic recurrent dislocations typically warrant surgical intervention. The choice of technique-ranging from nonabsorbable sutures to tendon autografts and plating-is based on individualized care by considering patient-specific factors such as activity level, bone quality, and health.» Hig

Concealed penis: A review of multilevel classification and surgical reconstruction techniques.

Concealed penis (CP), also known as hidden or buried penis, is an external genital deformity in which a normal-sized penis is covered by skin, subcutaneous tissue or fat tissue in the prepubic area, leading to abnormal exposure. This condition has significant morbidity and a negative effect on certain aspects of the patient's quality of life, including but not limited to hygiene, micturition, self-image and sexual function. Current classification systems for CP are heterogeneous, but most of these further classify CP based on their division into congenital concealed penis (CCP) and adult-acqui…

Neurovascular Involvement in Fibromuscular Dysplasia: A Clue for Reappraisal of Old Classifications.

BACKGROUND: Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) is a non-atheromatous, non-inflammatory arteriopathy involving the medium and small-sized arteries virtually in all vascular beds. The most frequently involved arteries are cerebroafferent and renal arteries. The current classification of the diseases is mostly imaging based and two subtypes are defined: a multifocal one and a focal one. The multifocal pattern corresponds to the typical "string of beads", which is the most frequently reported subtype. AIMS: In this review, we are presenting the several phenotypes of FMD neuroimaging, including the ass…

The heterogeneity of thoracic Castleman disease: implications for classification and personalized management.

Castleman disease (CD) is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder categorized into unicentric CD (UCD) and multicentric CD (MCD). Surgical intervention is crucial for both diagnosis and treatment. However, comprehensive comparisons and detailed analyses of surgical outcomes remain limited. We retrospectively reviewed thoracic CD patients treated at our hospital from 2010 to 2024. Clinical, pathological, laboratory, and imaging data were compared between UCD and MCD. Treatment outcomes and prognoses were assessed using multivariate Cox regression. We also compared outcomes between video-assisted th

[Update on marginal zone lymphoma classification, diagnosis and treatment in 2024].

Marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) is the third most frequent lymphoma in Western countries with an increasing incidence with age. There are different histologic subtypes: Splenic MZL (SMZL), Nodal MZL (NZML), Extranodal MZL (EMZL) or MALT lymphoma and more recently, a novel entity called splenic diffuse red pulp small B-cell lymphoma. The accurate diagnosis relies on morphologic, phenotypic, cytogenetic and molecular features in order to rule out other indolent non-Hodgkin lymphomas. First line treatment depends on MZL subtypes: depending on localized or disseminated disease, MALT lymphoma are mana

Cardiac tumors: Updated classifications and main clinico-pathologic findings.

This review article - which is devoted to a wide range of physicians, e.g., pathologists, clinicians, radiologists, and general practitioners - is an up-to-date clinico-pathological description of cardiac tumours. Although rare, cardiac tumours are key components in oncology practice since both their early diagnosis and appropriate management denote urgent needs. Primary cardiac tumours (PCTs) are categorized in recent WHO classifications as well as in other scientific contributions. Their incidence is around 0.02 % while their prevalence is between 0.001 % and 0.03 %. Among PCTs, benign lesio…

The International Classification of Vestibular Disorders: Achievements, challenges, and future directions.

In 2007, the Bárány Society embarked on a project to establish definitions of vestibular syndromes and disorders based on best available evidence, referred to as the International Classification of Vestibular Disorders (ICVD). Since then, numerous publications providing consensus-driven diagnostic criteria for vestibular symptoms, syndromes, and disorders have been published. Here, we reflect on the rationale for developing the ICVD as well as its subsequent achievements, challenges, and outlook. In this summary of the work of the ICVD to date, the authors will focus on practical aspects to he…

Beyond the Maxillary Sinus: A Proposed Classification of Chronic Sinus Atelectasis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic maxillary atelectasis (CMA) describes the loss of maxillary sinus volume and has been well-described in the literature under many different names, creating inconsistency in reporting. A recent proposal has standardized the nomenclature but does not include disease of other paranasal sinuses. OBJECTIVE: We describe a unique case of chronic ethmoid atelectasis, briefly review literature associated with CMA, and propose an expanded classification of chronic sinus atelectasis. RESULTS: A 70-year-old man presented to the emergency department with transient vision loss and was …
