Effectiveness of community-based treatment for problem gambling: a quasi-experimental evaluation of cognitive-behavioral vs. twelve-step therapy.

With the increasing availability of gambling throughout North America, there is interest in developing more effective treatments. This study compares the effectiveness of two brief outpatient treatments for problem gambling: eight sessions of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (n = 65) and eight sessions of a twelve-step treatment-oriented approach based on the first five steps of Gamblers Anonymous (n = 61). There were no baseline group differences on gambling-relevant variables. Twelve months post-treatment showed no group differences on key gambling variables (eg, frequency, abstinence rates, mon

Epigenetic downregulation of atrial natriuretic peptide but not vasopressin mRNA expression in females with eating disorders is related to impulsivity.

Disturbances of volume-regulating mechanisms have already been implicated in the pathophysiology of eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia nervosa with the peptide hormones vasopressin and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) being of special interest. Aim of the present study was to investigate, whether the expression of the corresponding genes was altered and if so, if these changes could be explained by epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation. We analyzed blood samples of 46 women suffering from anorexia (n=22) or bulimia nervosa (n=24) as well as of 30 healthy controls. Peripheral mRN

Women's physical aggression in bars: an event-based examination of precipitants and predictors of severity.

Although women drink in bars and experience aggression in bar settings, much of the research has focused on men's experiences of aggression in bars. We used data from questionnaires and face-to-face interviews to examine the contributors to the occurrence and severity of women's experience of specific incidents of aggression in bars. Young women (n=92) provided event-based descriptions of their most recent experience of physical aggression in a bar during the past 24 months. Most aggression in bars was precipitated by rowdy behavior and involved female opponents who were strangers. The severit

The relationship of impulsivity to response inhibition and decision-making in remitted patients with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity, a core feature of bipolar disorder (BD), is a multifaceted concept encompassing failure of response inhibition and poor decision-making. Abnormalities in these two cognitive domains have been reported in BD patients but their relationship with impulsivity has not been explored. METHODS: Twenty-five remitted patients with BD completed the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS) and performed the Hayling Sentence Completion Task (HSCT) and a computerized version of the Iowa Gambling task. The HSCT total errors scaled score was used as a measure of response inhibition while th

Impulsivity, aggressiveness, and DSM-IV personality disorders.

The aim of this study is to assess whether impulsive and aggressive traits can be placed on a continuum with DSM-IV Cluster B Personality Disorders (PDs) and to determine if different aspects of these personality traits are specifically associated with individual Cluster B PDs. The study group comprised 461 outpatients admitted consecutively to a clinic that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of PDs. Principal component analyses clearly suggested a five-factor structure of both normal and psychopathological personality traits. Importantly, measures of impulsivity, aggressiveness and no

Callous-unemotional traits in predicting the severity and stability of conduct problems and delinquency.

The current study tests whether the presence of callous-unemotional (CU) traits designates a group of children with conduct problems who show an especially severe and chronic pattern of conduct problems and delinquency. Ninety-eight children who were selected from a large community screening of school children in grades 3, 4, 6 and 7 were followed across four yearly assessments. Children with conduct problems who also showed CU traits exhibited the highest rates of conduct problems, self-reported delinquency, and police contacts across the four years of the study. In fact, this group accounted

Impulsivity in disordered eating, affective disorder and substance use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Failure to control impulsive behaviour has been postulated as an underlying mechanism common to substance use disorder, sociopathy and to a substantial subgroup of women with bulimia nervosa. METHOD: Three hundred and one women recruited to a general population study were selected either at random or because they had lifetime substance use disorder, affective disorder or symptoms of bulimia. A subsequent interview determined the existence of problems with impulsivity. Behaviour that is an integral part of a DSM-III axis 1 disorder was excluded from the impulsivity measure. RESULT

Leveraging point-of-view camera and MediaPipe for objective hyperactivity assessment in preschool ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often emerges in early childhood, with hyperactivity and impulsivity constituting the most prominent symptoms during the preschool period. Current assessment approaches rely largely on clinical interviews and behavior rating scales, which are susceptible to subjectivity and contextual bias. Objective, ecologically valid, and low-burden methods for quantifying hyperactivity in preschool settings remain limited. METHODS: This observational, cross-sectional study investigated whether movement-based features extracted from teacher-worn p

National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) clinical trials network (CTN) stimulant use disorder (StUD) task force results: 2024 update.

INTRODUCTION: Increases in morbidity and mortality associated with stimulant use disorders (StUDs) combined with limited pharmacological research and development highlight the need to explore repurposing existing medications with mechanisms of action relevant to the management of StUDs. This paper presents findings regarding a common set of symptoms common across StUDs, impulsivity and compulsivity, that offer compelling rationale to identify future interventions for evaluation in CTN trials and elsewhere. METHODS: A virtual Task Force meeting held in 2024 by the National Drug Abuse Treatment

Ex-vivo mechano-structural characterization of fresh diseased human esophagus.

The esophagus, the tube-like organ responsible for transporting food from the pharynx to the stomach, operates as a highly mechanical structure, exhibiting complex contraction and distension patterns triggered by neurological impulses. Despite the critical role of mechanics in its function and the need for high-fidelity models of esophageal transport, mechanical characterization studies of human esophagus remain relatively scarce. In addition to the paucity of studies in human specimens, the available results are often scattered in terms of methodology and scope, making it difficult to compare

Effectiveness and mechanisms of the arts therapies in forensic care. A systematic review, narrative synthesis, and meta analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health care provided to offenders with psychiatric problems in forensic settings mainly consists of verbal oriented treatments. In addition, experience-based therapies are used such as (creative) arts therapies: (visual) art therapy, music therapy, drama therapy and dance (movement) therapy. There are indications for effectiveness of arts therapies, but a systematic overview of effect studies of all arts therapies in forensic care is lacking. METHODS: First, we performed a systematic review. Second, Thematic Analysis was used to synthesize the qualitative narrative result

Digital Addiction and Sleep.

In 2020, the World Health Organization formally recognized addiction to digital technology (connected devices) as a worldwide problem, where excessive online activity and internet use lead to inability to manage time, energy, and attention during daytime and produce disturbed sleep patterns or insomnia during nighttime. Recent studies have shown that the problem has increased in magnitude worldwide during the COVID-19 pandemic. The extent to which dysfunctional sleep is a consequence of altered motivation, memory function, mood, diet, and other lifestyle variables or results from excess of blu

Emotion Regulation and Self-Harm Among Forensic Psychiatric Patients.

Emotion regulation has been specifically linked to both non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and attempted suicide. It is also known that self-harm is disproportionally higher (30-68.4%) in forensic samples than in the general population, yet knowledge about the association between emotion regulation and self-harm in forensic settings is scarce. The purpose of this study was to describe emotion regulation in a sample of forensic psychiatric patients, to explore dimensions and levels of emotion regulation between forensic psychiatric patients with and without self-harm, and to explore associations b

Therapeutic Potentials of Ketamine and Esketamine in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Substance Use Disorders (SUD) and Eating Disorders (ED): A Review of the Current Literature.

The obsessive-compulsive spectrum refers to disorders drawn from several diagnostic categories that share core features related to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), such as obsessive thoughts, compulsive behaviors and anxiety. Disorders that include these features can be grouped according to the focus of the symptoms, e.g., bodily preoccupation (i.e., eating disorders, ED) or impulse control (i.e., substance use disorders, SUD), and they exhibit intriguing similarities in phenomenology, etiology, pathophysiology, patient characteristics and clinical outcomes. The non-competitive N-methyl-D-

Digital communication and social cognition in adults with frontal lobe epilepsy: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Frontal Lobe Epilepsy (FLE) face problems with social cognition (SC) since their difficulties in humor appreciation, facial and eye gaze emotional recognition. The effects of frontal (and temporal) seizures on SC may be understood in terms of emotion recognition (ER), Theory of Mind (ΤοΜ), empathy, and social behavior deficits in relation to their relevant pathophysiology. The impact of FLE on SC as expressed in digital environments still represents a terra incognita, as well as the objective of this exploratory work. OBJECTIVE: We aimed at exploring, elaborate and c

Comorbidity Profiles of Psychotic Patients in Emergency Psychiatry.

Objectives: Individuals with psychotic symptoms presenting to emergency psychiatry often have comorbid symptoms, such as substance misuse, depression, and anxiety. Many will also have symptoms linked to previous traumatic experiences such as impulsivity, often found in comorbid personality disorders. Although various studies have looked at specific comorbid symptoms, little is known regarding how these symptoms co-exist in individuals with psychotic symptoms and their link with social functioning. The primary objective of the present study was to identify comorbidity profiles among individuals
