Introduction : Traveling regularly to malaria endemic areas increasingly exposes travelers to various risks which could be mitigated by a pre-travel health consultation. The objective was to study the impact of advice provided during a pre-travel consultation on travelers’ behaviors and practices to identify travelers’ profiles and adapt the prevention recommendations before trave-ling to intertropical zones. Methods : Two self-assessment questionnaires (Q1-before and Q2-after travelling) were proposed to 271 individuals over 5 months of traveler consultations to assess be

Molecular epidemiology, evolution and phylogeny of Chikungunya virus: An updating review.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-transmitted alphavirus belonging to the Togaviridae family, causing a febrile illness associated with severe arthralgia and rash. In this review, we summarized a series of articles published from 2013 to 2016 concerning CHIKV epidemiology, phylogeny, vaccine and therapies, to give an update of our most recent article written in 2014 (Lo Presti et al.,2014). CHIKV infection was first reported in 1952 from Makonde plateaus and since this time caused many outbreaks worldwide, involving the Indian Ocean region, African countries, American continent and Italy

Temporal and spatial distribution of dengue in an urban setting: evidence from Hanoi, Vietnam (2018-2022).

Dengue fever remains a major mosquito-borne disease in Southeast Asia, with increasing incidence in rapidly urbanizing settings. In Vietnam, Hanoi has experienced recurrent outbreaks; however, comprehensive analyses of recent dengue epidemiology in northern regions remain limited. This study aimed to characterize the spatiotemporal dynamics of dengue in Hanoi from 2018 to 2022. A retrospective descriptive study was conducted using routine dengue surveillance data collected by the Hanoi Center for Disease Control. All clinically diagnosed and laboratory-confirmed dengue cases reported between J

Functional characterization of the kinin receptor in the Chagas disease vector Rhodnius prolixus; activity of native kinins and potent biostable Aib-containing insect kinin analogs.

The causative agent for Chagas disease, Trypanosoma cruzi, is transmitted to a human host in the urine/feces of the kissing bug, Rhodnius prolixus, following blood feeding. Kinins are important chemical messengers in the overall control of blood feeding physiology in R. prolixus, including hindgut contractions and excretion. Thus, disruption in kinin signaling would have damaging consequences to the insect but also interfere with the transmission of Chagas Disease. Here, a heterologous functional receptor assay was used to confirm the validity of the previously cloned putative kinin G-protein-

Enhancing malaria control using Lagenaria siceraria and its mediated zinc oxide nanoparticles against the vector Anopheles stephensi and its parasite Plasmodium falciparum.

In many developing countries, there are certain health problems faced by the public, one among them is Malaria. This tropical disease is mainly caused by Plasmodium falciparum. It is categorized as a disaster to public health, which increases both mortality and morbidity. Numerous drugs are in practice to control this disease and their vectors. Eco-friendly control tools are required to battle against vector of this significant disease. Nanotechnology plays a major role in fighting against malaria. The present paper synthesized Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) using zinc nitrate via simple g

Response to Rift Valley Fever in Tanzania: Challenges and Opportunities.

Rift Valley Fever (RVF) is an arthropod borne viral disease affecting livestock (cattle, sheep, goats and camels), wildlife and humans caused by Phlebovirus. The disease occurs in periodic cycles of 4-15 years associated with flooding from unusually high precipitations in many flood-prone habitats. Aedes and Culex spp and other mosquito species are important epidemic vectors. Because of poor living conditions and lack of knowledge on the pathogenesis of RVF, nomadic pastoralists and agro-pastoralists are at high risk of contracting the disease during epidemics. RVF is a professional hazard for

Vectorial transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi: an experimental field study with susceptible and immunized hosts.

The dynamics of vectorial transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi and the level of host (guinea pigs) protection after immunization with attenuated parasites (TCC strain) was studied under natural climatic conditions in an endemic region of northern Argentina. The experimental design included two guinea pig corrals isolated by mosquito netting. One (controls) had 17 healthy and susceptible adult guinea pigs. The other had 19 guinea pigs immunized with attenuated T. cruzi TCC strain. Each corral was colonized in April 1988 with equal-sized populations of Triatoma infestans naturally infected by T. cr

Socio-demographic predictors of insecticide-treated bed net ownership and utilization for protection against malaria by rural community members across five regions of Mainland Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Despite decades of control efforts. malaria burden in Tanzania remains high, with marked heterogeneity in transmission intensity across regions. Insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) are a core malaria intervention and are distributed through multiple channels in Tanzania to promote equitable access and use, yet disparities in ITNs ownership and use persist. This study evaluated socio-demographic predictors of ITNs ownership and use among rural communities from five regions with varying malaria endemicity. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional survey covering individuals aged ≥

Targeting malaria in high-risk populations in low endemic regions in northern Namibia: a quasi-experimental controlled trial to reduce malaria in seasonal agricultural workers and cattle herders.

BACKGROUND: Agricultural worksites are rarely targeted by malaria control programmes, yet may play a role in maintaining local transmission due to workers' high mobility, low intervention coverage and occupational exposures. METHODS: A quasi-experimental controlled intervention study was carried out in farming and cattle herding populations in northern Namibia to evaluate the impact of a targeted malaria intervention package. Eight health facility catchment areas in Zambezi and Ohangwena Regions were randomised to an intervention arm and eligible individuals within worksites in intervention a

Early results of integrated malaria control and implications for the management of fever in under-five children at a peripheral health facility: a case study of Chongwe rural health centre in Zambia.

BACKGROUND: Zambia has taken lead in implementing integrated malaria control so as to attain the National Health Strategic Plan goal of "reducing malaria incidence by 75% and under-five mortality due to malaria by 20% by the year 2010". The strategic interventions include the use of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets and indoor residual spraying, the use of artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACT) for the treatment of uncomplicated malaria, improving diagnostic capacity (both microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests), use of intermittent presumptive treatment for pregnant women, research,

The dynamics of Wuchereria bancrofti infection: a model-based analysis of longitudinal data from Pondicherry, India.

This paper presents a model-based analysis of longitudinal data describing the impact of integrated vector management on the intensity of Wuchereria bancrofti infection in Pondicherry, India. The aims of this analysis were (1) to gain insight into the dynamics of infection, with emphasis on the possible role of immunity, and (2) to develop a model that can be used to predict the effects of control. Using the LYMFASIM computer simulation program, two models with different types of immunity (anti-L3 larvae or anti-adult worm fecundity) were compared with a model without immunity. Parameters were

Relative abundance of Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) with reference to infection and infectivity rate from the rural and urban areas of East and West Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh, India.

This paper describes the seasonal abundance of Culex quinquefasciatus in the rural and urban areas of the East and West Godavari districts (EGDT and WGDT) of Andhra Pradesh, India. The per man-hour density (PMHD) was collected from seven units in EGDT and two units in WGDT, which comprised rural and urban areas. The highest infection and infectivity rates were found in the rural areas of Rajahmundry (43.6%) and Amalapuram (13.2%) respectively. In urban areas, the highest infection and infectivity rates were found in Rajahmundry: 7.5% and 3.6% respectively. There was considerable difference in

The epidemiology of St. Louis encephalitis in Corpus Christi, Texas, 1966.

In the summer of 1966, an epidemic of St. Louis encephalitis occurred in Corpus Christi, Texas, coincident with one occurring in Dallas about 563 km to the north. Among the 76 cases confirmed in Corpus Christi, there were two deaths; the attack rate was 41.0 per 100,000. In contrast with a concurrent outbreak in Dallas and the 1964 outbreak in Houston, attack rates were much higher in populations of the upper socioeconomic districts. This distribution may have resulted from the combined effects of an unusual concentration of vector mosquito breeding sites in storm sewers in the upper socioecon

FLEAS AND FLEA-BORNE DISEASES IN SINGAPORE: DIVERSITY, TRENDS, AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS.

Understanding and controlling vectors and vector-borne diseases is critical for maintaining public health in Singapore. Although mosquitoes, ticks, and the diseases they cause have attracted strong attention from researchers in recent years, fleas and flea-borne diseases remain largely neglected in Singapore. To stimulate research on this neglected topic, we examine trends in flea-borne rickettsiosis in Singapore from 2016-2022. Trends in these data indicate that the majority of cases are locally acquired and are more common in males, migrant workers, and teens/young adults from ages 15-34. In

[Epidemiology of malaria in the French Armed Forces].

Because of the individual morbidity and lethality and the resulting collective incapacity, malaria has always been a risk for the Armed Forces in operation. The fight against malaria is a real public health plan carried out by the Armed Forces Health Service (SSA) for the benefit of the Forces. This plan has four main components: vector control, which targets larvae and adult mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles, personal vector protection, which limits human-vector contact, chemoprophylaxis, and early diagnosis and treatment of malaria.Since 2001, the epidemiology of malaria in the Armed Forces

Identification of Novel Malaria Transmission-Blocking Vaccine Candidates.

Control measures have significantly reduced malaria morbidity and mortality in the last two decades; however, the downward trends have stalled and have become complicated by the emergence of COVID-19. Significant efforts have been made to develop malaria vaccines, but currently only the RTS,S/AS01 vaccine against Plasmodium falciparum has been recommended by the WHO, for widespread use among children in sub-Saharan Africa. The efficacy of RTS,S/AS01 is modest, and therefore the development of more efficacious vaccines is still needed. In addition, the development of transmission-blocking vacci

Potential of Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) to transmit yellow fever virus in urban areas in Central Africa.

Yellow Fever (YF) remains a major public health issue in Sub-Saharan Africa and South America, despite the availability of an effective vaccine. In Africa, most YF outbreaks are reported in West Africa. However, urban outbreaks occurred in 2016 in both Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and imported cases were reported in Chinese workers coming back from Africa. In Central Africa, Cameroon and the Republic of Congo host a high proportion of non-vaccinated populations increasing the risk of urban outbreaks. The main vector is Aedes aegypti and possibly, Aedes albopictus, both be

Chikungunya fever - A new global threat.

The recent onset of epidemics caused by viruses such as Ebola, Marburg, Nipah, Lassa, coronavirus, West-Nile encephalitis, Saint Louis encephalitis, human immunodeficiency virus, dengue, yellow fever and Venezuelan haemorrhagic fever alerts about the risk these agents represent for the global health. Chikungunya virus represents a new threat. Surged from remote African regions, this virus has become endemic in the Indic ocean basin, the Indian subcontinent and the southeast of Asia, causing serious epidemics in Africa, Indic Ocean Islands, Asia and Europe. Due to their epidemiological and biol

Tick-borne pathogens and the vector potential of ticks in China.

Ticks, as obligate blood-sucking ectoparasites, attack a broad range of vertebrates and transmit a great diversity of pathogenic microorganisms. They are considered second only to mosquitoes as vectors of human disease, and the most important vector of pathogens of domestic and wild animals. Of the 117 described species in the Chinese tick fauna, 60 are known to transmit one or more diseases: 36 species isolated within China and 24 species isolated outside China. Moreover, 38 of these species carry multiple pathogens, indicating the potentially vast role of these vectors in transmitting pathog
