Application of a body condition score index for targeted selective treatment in adult Merino sheep--A modelling study.

This study aimed to establish whether sheep flock production losses due to nematode (worm) infections are typically greater in mature sheep selected for anthelmintic treatment at random compared to sheep selected for treatment based on low (poorer) body condition score (BCS). The study also examined the proportion of sheep in flocks that could be left untreated before production losses became evident, and projected worm egg pasture contamination. Sheep were monitored at two experimental sites in Western Australia (Mediterranean climate). Sheep were stratified for BCS, liveweight and faecal wor

Brazilian red propolis: phytochemical screening, antioxidant activity and effect against cancer cells.

BACKGROUND: The implementation of new public healthcare models that stimulate the use of natural products from traditional medicine, as a so-called integrated medicine, refers to an approach that use best of both conventional medicine and traditional medicine. Propolis is a widely used natural product by different ancient cultures and known to exhibit biological activities beneficial for health. The large number of studies conducted with propolis had shown that its chemical composition differs as a function of the climate, plant diversity and bee species and plays an important role on its ther

Evaporation of freely suspended single droplets: experimental, theoretical and computational simulations.

Evaporation is ubiquitous in nature. This process influences the climate, the formation of clouds, transpiration in plants, the survival of arctic organisms, the efficiency of car engines, the structure of dried materials and many other phenomena. Recent experiments discovered two novel mechanisms accompanying evaporation: temperature discontinuity at the liquid-vapour interface during evaporation and equilibration of pressures in the whole system during evaporation. None of these effects has been predicted previously by existing theories despite the fact that after 130 years of investigation

Assessing the Effectiveness of Crowdsourced Data to Detect Established Tick Populations in Quebec, Canada: Retrospective Ecological Study.

BACKGROUND: The range expansion of ticks transmitting zoonotic diseases in Canada poses challenges for public health surveillance. Active monitoring of where tick populations are emerging helps inform public health responses, but is resource intensive and logistically complex. Crowdsourced data may provide a cost-effective approach to augment surveillance. In this study, we assessed the value of crowdsourced data from eTick, a platform whereby the public submits tick photographs for expert identification. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to (1) characterize spatial patterns of eTick submissions and identi

Association between hypertension and dietary inflammatory index among adults: a cross-sectional study in Hainan, China.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension (HTN) affects 31.6% of Chinese adults and contributes to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases through chronic inflammation. Pro-inflammatory diets, measured by the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII), have been associated with increased HTN risk. However, evidence from tropical regions remains limited. As China's only tropical province, Hainan has distinctive dietary patterns shaped by its geographic and climatic characteristics. This study aimed to examine the association between the DII and HTN among adults in Hainan to identify high-risk dietary patterns and inf

Mindfulness and sustainable diets: a meta-analysis and CO2 emission savings scenarios.

BACKGROUND: Dietary habits are a major driver of both human health outcomes and global greenhouse gas emissions, with excessive meat consumption being a key contributor. Mindfulness, understood as purposeful and non-judgmental awareness of the present moment, has been suggested as a psychological factor that can foster more sustainable food choices. However, the empirical evidence on the link between mindfulness and sustainable diets remains fragmented. MAIN BODY: This study presents the first systematic review and meta-analysis of the association between mindfulness and sustainable dietary b

Eating disorders and eco-anxiety: exploring mental health challenges in university students.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is a major global challenge with profound psychological impacts, including eco-anxiety, defined as a chronic fear of environmental catastrophe. Despite its potential role of exacerbating vulnerabilities to maladaptive coping mechanisms such as eating disorders (EDs), the relationship between eco-anxiety and eating disorders EDs remains underexplored, particularly in student populations. This study aimed to investigate the associations between eco-anxiety, EDs, and psychological variables among university students. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among

Effect of feed restriction on dynamics of feed intake, milk yield, and energy balance in dairy cows.

Due to climate change, forage shortages may become more frequent, potentially leading to underfeeding in dairy cows. Limited knowledge exists on how milk yield and energy balance evolve during and, in particular, after the underfeeding phase. This study aimed to assess the impact of 2 feed restriction durations (4 and 6 weeks) on the changes in feed intake, milk yield, and energy balance in dairy cows. A total of 42 cows were first fed ad libitum for 3 weeks and then divided into 3 groups of 14 cows. Two groups were underfed by 5 kg of DM per day for 4 or 6 weeks (R4 and R6). After the restric

Comparison of Temperature-Mortality Associations across the Middle East Using Different Exposure Estimation Approaches.

BACKGROUND: Traditional temperature-health studies have predominantly relied on temperature measurements from stations or modeled spatial averages from gridded temperature data sets. It has been suggested that population-weighted spatial averages would perform better in remote regions with large temperature and population variability. This would be particularly true in regions other than North America and Europe where outcome data are often only available on a crude spatial scale, but no studies have examined this in such regions, where temperatures can be particularly hot. OBJECTIVE: Using th

Educational frameworks for zoonotic malaria prevention: a narrative review integrating behavioural theory, participatory design, and instructional models for Plasmodium knowlesi in Southeast Asia.

BACKGROUND: While global malaria burden has declined over the past two decades, zoonotic malaria-particularly Plasmodium knowlesi in Southeast Asia-remains a persistent threat to elimination. Conventional control tools, such as indoor residual spraying and insecticide-treated nets, are less effective where outdoor-biting vectors and forest-fringe livelihoods dominate. Education and behaviour change are therefore critical adjuncts to biomedical and vector-control strategies. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review synthesises evidence on educational interventions for malaria prevention, examines beha

Ozone pollution: a persistent challenge in large cities like Mexico City, Los Angeles and Beijing.

Over the past decade or so, many large cities around the world have made little to no progress in lowering ground-level ozone concentrations, despite significant reductions in key precursor pollutants directly emitted into the atmosphere. Ozone comes from complex chemical reactions in the air that make it difficult to control. Current control measures implemented in some cities have apparently reached their limit. While stricter emission regulations, improvements in technology and cleaner fuels have prevented a return to previous ozone levels, they have not reduced them further. They have trig

Leveraging transfer learning techniques for automated tuberculosis classification on chest X-rays.

Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the major community-health challenges, particularly in underdeveloped and middle-income sets where there is a low maximum in diagnostic areas. Proper management depends on timely and correct detection thus enabling less transmission and timely treatment. Screening of TB by Chest X-rays is used widely due to its availability and speed but their reading depends entirely on skilled radiologists who sometimes can be vulnerable to variability, either due to subjective interpretation or due to pressure. Such constraints support the need to have automated reliable means th
