Neurological complications in acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (APSGN) have been traditionally attributed to hypertensive encephalopathy. A 9-year-old girl with biopsy-documented APSGN developed seizures at a time she was normotensive and biochemically well balanced. Computed tomography of her brain was consistent with vasculitis, a finding which was also clinically supported by apparent vasculitic involvement of other organ systems. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first hemodynamic-based heart sound generation model embedded in a complete real-time computational model of the cardiovascular system. Simulated heart sounds are similar to experimental and clinical measurements, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Our model can be used to investigate the relationships between heart sound acoustic features and hemodynamic factors/anatomical parameters.

We report a large-cell adenocarcinoma of the lung in a tobacco smoker with classical superior vena cava syndrome and digital clubbing. Computed tomography and nuclear magnetic resonance revealed the involvement of the vena cava and metastases in the left adrenal gland and central nervous system. Biopsy samples of the mass yielded the diagnosis. The patient underwent a schedule of palliative chemotherapy and brain radiotherapy.

This computation is initiated within the retina at the very first synapse in the visual pathway - the photoreceptor ribbon synapse. A 69-year-old woman with no history of malignant disease presented with complaints of ptosis, diplopia, and left upper eyelid fullness. Computed tomography showed soft tissue infiltration of the left superior orbit. Biopsy was performed through an anterior orbitotomy. Histopathology revealed a mucinous adenocarcinoma. Tuberous sclerosis is an inherited disorder characterized by a triad of signs--mental retardation, seizures and adenoma sebaceum. The hamartomas that commonly affect multiple organ systems can be seen on plain film radiography. Computed tomography and ultrasonography are useful for assessing whether lesions are present in the abdomen, kidneys and brain. The hamartomas tend to bleed, causing symptoms and prompting the need for evaluation.

A case of Ludwig's angina dissected along deep cervical fascial planes into the mediastinum caused a virulent mediastinitis and abscess. Computed tomography precisely delineated the extent of the infection. Incomplete débridement resulted in a residual abscess and persistent systemic sepsis that culminated in the patient's death. Aggressive antibiotic treatment of the orofacial cellulitis along with complete mediastinal drainage are recommended for optimal outcome.

This paper provides an addendum to an earlier paper describing the development of a computer record system for patient data. The specific problems addressed pertain to the storage and retrieval of historical information, physical signs and diagnosis. Some preliminary comparisons of audiological and vestibular test results are given for groups of patients with diagnoses of acoustic neuroma, Ménière's disease, temporal bone fracture and vestibular neuronitis.

We present a computational method for field-varying aberration recovery in optical systems by imaging a weak (index-matched) diffuser. We have proposed a novel type of bandpass plasmonic filter consisting of metal-insulator-metal bus waveguides coupled with a series of side-coupled cavities and stub waveguides.
