An experimental study to inform adoption of mindfulness-based stress reduction in chronic low back pain.

BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain is a common and sometimes disabling condition, and mindfulness-based stress reduction is recommended as a first line of therapy. This study tested whether different descriptions of mindfulness training altered based on influential intervention characteristics increased adoption intentions. METHODS: People with chronic low back pain (n = 452) were randomized to review one of four mindfulness training descriptions in an online survey using a 2 × 2 factorial design. The first factor was evidence strength and quality with relative advantage (ER). The second facto

Good soldiers in implementation: validation of the Implementation Citizenship Behavior Scale and its relation to implementation leadership and intentions to use evidence-based practices.

BACKGROUND: Implementation citizenship behavior (ICB) describes extra-role behaviors performed by employees to support evidence-based practice (EBP) implementation. Such behaviors can be measured using the Implementation Citizenship Behavior Scale (ICBS), which divides ICB into two dimensions, namely helping others and keeping informed. The current study extends the use of the ICBS to a context outside the USA and adds to the literature by investigating how leader-perceived ICB relates to practitioner-perceived implementation leadership and practitioners' intentions to use EBPs. METHODS: Part

Implementation contextual factors related to community-based active travel to school interventions: a mixed methods interview study.

BACKGROUND: Active travel to school contributes to multiple physical and psychosocial benefits for youth, yet population rates of active travel to school are alarmingly low in the USA and many other countries. Though walking school bus interventions are effective for increasing rates of active travel to school and children's overall physical activity, uptake of such interventions has been low. The objective of this study was to conduct a mixed methods implementation evaluation to identify contextual factors that serve as barriers and facilitators among existing walking school bus programs. Multi-tiered external facilitation: the role of feedback loops and tailored interventions in supporting change in a stepped-wedge implementation trial.

BACKGROUND: Facilitation is a complex, relational implementation strategy that guides change processes. Facilitators engage in multiple activities and tailor efforts to local contexts. How this work is coordinated and shared among multiple, external actors and the contextual factors that prompt and moderate facilitators to tailor activities have not been well-described. METHODS: We conducted a mixed methods evaluation of a trial to improve the quality of transient ischemic attack care. Six sites in the Veterans Health Administration received external facilitation (EF) before and during a 1-ye

The CircumVent Project: a CPAP/O2 helmet solution for non-invasive ventilation using an implementation research framework.

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory failure, a major cause of death in COVID-19, is managed with high-flow oxygen therapy via invasive mechanical ventilation. In resource-limited settings like Nigeria, the shortage of ventilators and oxygen supply makes this option challenging. Evidence-based non-invasive alternatives to mechanical ventilation such as the use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices exist, but there have been concerns that non-invasive ventilation may expose healthcare workers to infection from aerosolized dispersion of SARS-CoV-2. We propose to evaluate the feasibility

Implementing immediate postpartum contraception: a comparative case study at 11 hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Immediate postpartum long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) is an evidence-based practice, but hospitals face significant barriers to its adoption. Our objective was to examine how organizational context (e.g., size, employee attitudes toward the clinical practice) and implementation strategies (i.e., the actions taken to routinize a clinical practice) drive successful implementation of immediate postpartum LARC services, with a goal of informing the design of future implementation interventions. METHODS: We conducted a comparative case study of the implementation of inpatien

Adapting and adopting highly specialized pediatric eating disorder treatment to virtual care: a protocol for an implementation study in the COVID-19 context.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted individuals with eating disorders; resulting in increased symptoms, as well as feelings of isolation and anxiety. To conform with social distancing requirements, outpatient eating disorder treatment in Canada is being delivered virtually, but a lack of direction surrounding this change creates challenges for practitioners, patients, and families. As a result, there is an urgent need to not only adapt evidence-based care, including family-based treatment (FBT), to virtual formats, but to study its implementation in eating disorder progra

An implementation intervention to increase the routine provision of antenatal care addressing gestational weight gain: study protocol for a stepped-wedge cluster trial.

BACKGROUND: Weight gain during pregnancy that is outside of recommended levels is associated with a range of adverse outcomes for the mother and child, including gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, preterm birth, and obesity. Internationally, 60-80% of pregnant women report gaining weight outside of recommended levels. While guideline recommendations and RCT evidence support the provision of antenatal care that supports healthy gestational weight gain, less than 10% of health professionals routinely weigh pregnant women; discuss weight gain, diet, and physical activity; and provide a referral

Acceptance and completion of rifapentine-based TB preventive therapy (3HP) among people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Kampala, Uganda-patient and health worker perspectives.

BACKGROUND: A 12-dose, once-weekly regimen of isoniazid and rifapentine (3HP) is effective in preventing tuberculosis (TB) among people living with HIV (PLHIV). We sought to identify potential barriers to and facilitators of acceptance and completion of 3HP treatment from the perspective of people living with HIV (PLHIV) and health workers in a routine HIV care setting in Kampala, Uganda. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 25 PLHIV and 10 health workers at an HIV/AIDS clinic in Kampala, Uganda. For both groups, we explored their understanding and interpretations of TB and T

Adapting a skills-based stroke prevention intervention for communities in Ghana: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a major cause of death in Ghana. Evidence-based interventions for stroke prevention have been successful in the US; however, in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), such interventions are scarce. The "Discharge Education Strategies for Reduction of Vascular Events" (DESERVE) intervention led to a 10-mmHg reduction in systolic blood pressure (SBP) among Hispanic survivors of mild/moderate stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA) at 1-year follow-up. Our objectives were to capture the perceptions of a diverse set of stakeholders in an urban community in Ghana regardi

Development of a user-friendly system for image processing of electron microscopy by integrating a web browser and PIONE with Eos.

Eos (Extensible object-oriented system) is one of the powerful applications for image processing of electron micrographs. In usual cases, Eos works with only character user interfaces (CUI) under the operating systems (OS) such as OS-X or Linux, not user-friendly. Thus, users of Eos need to be expert at image processing of electron micrographs, and have a little knowledge of computer science, as well. However, all the persons who require Eos does not an expert for CUI. Thus we extended Eos to a web system independent of OS with graphical user interfaces (GUI) by integrating web browser.Advanta

Physiotherapy after anterior cervical spine surgery for cervical disc disease: study protocol of a prospective randomised study to compare internet-based neck-specific exercise with prescribed physical activity.

INTRODUCTION: Patients suffering from remaining disability after anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF) surgery for cervical disc disease may be prescribed physical activity (PPA) or neck-specific exercises (NSEs). Currently, we lack data for the success of either approach. There is also a knowledge gap concerning the use of internet-based care for cervical disc disease. The scarcity of these data, and the high proportion of patients with various degrees of incapacity following ACDF, warrant increased efforts to investigate and improve cost-effective rehabilitation. The objective is

Informal Caregiver-Observed Fall Risk Indicators and Caregiver Responses to Prevent Falls Among Community-Dwelling Older People: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Informal caregivers are uniquely positioned to recognize subtle changes that precede falls because of their continuous presence in older people's everyday environments. However, caregiver-observed indicators of escalating fall risk have not been systematically synthesized. This systematic review synthesizes the evidence on informal caregiver-observed fall risk indicators and caregiver responses to prevent falls among community-dwelling older people. METHODS: A targeted synthesis of peer-reviewed literature was undertaken using six electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, We

Digital Diabetes Health Coaching for Adults With Uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes: Protocol for a Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Recent advancements in digital health have enabled the development of technology-enhanced diabetes coaching programs that offer personalized, data-driven, and adaptive support. However, evidence on their implementation and impact is scattered and has not been comprehensively synthesized. Although numerous studies have informed intervention development using different theories and models, the diversity of these approaches creates a significant challenge in developing an evidence-based intervention that is adaptable and effective across different population groups. OBJECTIVE: This s

Shared variance across FrACT visual tasks: Robust positive associations but inconclusive latent structure.

A long-standing question in vision science is whether individual differences in visual performance reflect a general visual ability or a set of largely task-specific processes. Previous studies have often reported weak associations across heterogeneous perceptual tasks, challenging the idea of a common visual factor. Here, we asked whether shared variance becomes more evident when visual tasks are conceptually and procedurally similar. One hundred fifty-eight adults completed eight low-level acuity and hyperacuity paradigms implemented in FrACT10: single letter, Landolt C, tumbling E, row of o

Strategies and barriers in radiation risk communication in medical imaging: A scoping review of radiographers' practices.

INTRODUCTION: Radiation risk communication allows patients to make an informed decision, enhancing their autonomy during diagnostic imaging procedures. It can also reduce anxiety and improve patient cooperation. However, evidence suggests that radiographers often provide inadequate or unclear information about radiation risks. Several barriers further limit effective communication, thereby undermining patient awareness, informed decision-making, and overall patient-centred care. This study explored strategies and barriers in radiation risk communication. METHODS: A scoping review was conducte

The dual burden of disease: Depression among patients with multidrug resistance tuberculosis in low-income and lower- middle-income countries: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) continues to pose a serious global health challenge, particularly in low-income and lower-middle-income countries where the disease burden, fragile health systems, and socioeconomic hardships are most pronounced. These conditions not only complicate treatment but also worsen patients' vulnerability to depression. Although numerous primary studies have investigated the prevalence of depression among individuals with MDR-TB, their findings have been inconsistent. To address this gap, the present study seeks to estimate the pooled prevalence

Enhancing engineering competencies through Outcome-based Education: A mixed-methods study in an intelligent control course.

Bridging the gap between theory and practice remains a persistent challenge in engineering education, especially in complex, algorithm-heavy courses like intelligent control. In such contexts, students often know the abstract concepts but struggle to turn them into workable engineering solutions. Outcome-Based Education (OBE), which focuses on what students can do, offers a promising way forward. However, detailed evidence on how well OBE works at the individual course level in technically demanding fields is still limited. In this quasi-experimental, mixed-methods study, we redesigned an unde
