Towards a comprehensive developmental model of pathological gambling.

AIMS: To develop a comprehensive etiological model of pathological gambling (PG) for men and women based on Kendler's development model for major depression, which groups 22 risk factors into five developmental tiers (childhood, early adolescence, late adolescence, adulthood, last year). We hypothesized that: (1) all risk factors would be associated significantly with PG; (2) the effect of risk factors in earlier developmental tiers would be accounted for by later tiers; and (3) there would be few gender differences. DESIGN: Separate models were built for life-time gambling and for 12-month P

Impulsive action in the 5-choice serial reaction time test in 5-HT₂c receptor null mutant mice.

RATIONALE: Depletion of brain serotonin (5-HT) results in impulsive behaviour as measured by increased premature responding in the five-choice serial reaction time (5-CSRT) test. Acute selective blockade of 5-HT2C receptors also increases this form of impulsive action, whereas 5-HT2C receptor stimulation reduces premature responding. OBJECTIVES: These experiments determined the impact of genetic disruption of 5-HT2C receptor function on impulsive responding in the 5-CSRT test. METHODS: Food-restricted 5-HT2C receptor null mutant and wild-type (WT) mice were trained on the 5-CSRT test in whic

Age of onset in pathological gambling: clinical, therapeutic and personality correlates.

We aimed to explore the association between age of onset of gambling problems and current psychopathological and clinical status, personality profile and therapeutic outcome in a sample of pathological gamblers. A total of 904 consecutive pathological gambling patients were administered several instruments about gambling behavior, psychopathology and personality. They received a 4-month cognitive-behavioral group treatment. Information of dropouts and relapses during treatment was registered. Older age of onset of gambling problems was associated with higher general psychopathology (SCL-90-R P

Decision making in bipolar disorder: a cognitive modeling approach.

A formal modeling approach was used to characterize decision-making processes in bipolar disorder. Decision making was examined in 28 bipolar patients (14 acute and 14 remitted) and 25 controls using the Iowa Gambling Task (Bechara et al., 1994), a decision-making task used for assessing cognitive impulsivity. To disentangle motivational and cognitive aspects of decision-making processes, we applied a formal cognitive model to the performance on the Iowa Gambling Task. The model has three parameters: The relative impact of rewards and punishments on evaluations, the impact of recent and past p

A literature review of deliberate self-harm.

PURPOSE: Despite agreement across disciplines regarding the significance of deliberate self-harm (DSH), there continues to be a lack of consensus regarding what DSH is and is not. The purpose of this literature review was to determine the current state of understanding of this complex phenomenon. CONCLUSIONS: There remains a problem of definitional ambiguity regarding DSH, and a definition derived from the literature is offered. Using Rodger's framework for the evolutionary approach to concept analysis, the attributes, antecedents, and consequences of DSH are developed. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Prefrontal cortex activity is reduced in gambling and nongambling substance users during decision-making.

OBJECTIVE: Poor decision-making is a hallmark of addiction, whether to substances or activities. Performance on a widely used test of decision-making, the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), can discriminate controls from persons with ventral medial frontal lesions, substance-dependence, and pathological gambling. Positron emission tomography (PET) studies indicate that substance-dependent individuals show altered prefrontal activity on the task. Here we adapted the IGT to an fMRI setting to test the hypothesis that defects in ventral medial and prefrontal processing are associated with impaired decisio

The Effect of a Logotherapy-Based Program on Distress Tolerance in Patients with a History of Attempted Suicide.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is one of the global problems of public health, which is usually attempted at critical times, impulsively. Besides the main approaches to managing suicidal thoughts, cognitive behavioral therapy and logotherapy could also be used. literature review showed that no study had examined the effect of logotherapy on patients with a history of attempted suicide. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the effect of a logotherapy-based program on distress tolerance in attempted suicide patients in 2023. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was a three-stage (before, i

Latent classes and predictors of aggression trajectories in Korean adolescents: Implications for targeted prevention.

School violence and juvenile crime are emerging social problems in Korea. Adolescent aggression, an important mediator linking risk factors in the developmental environment to more serious deviant behavior, exerts long-term cumulative effects into adulthood. Thus, a longitudinal examination of aggression among adolescents is crucial. This study identified differential longitudinal trajectories of aggression in Korean adolescents and investigated the predictors distinguishing these latent classes. Data were used from 2,016 adolescents from Waves 1-5 (2018-2022) of the Korean Children and Youth

A pilot study of BRAVE, a CBT intervention to reduce violence risk in early psychosis.

Violence risk is elevated during the early phase of psychosis and can have significant consequences for engagement, recovery, and safety. BRAVE (Behavioral Response Against Violence Engagement) is a cognitive-behavioural intervention adapted from the PICASSO model for use in early intervention services (EIS) that targets dynamic, modifiable mechanisms associated with psychosis-related violence. This open pilot trial evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, fidelity, and preliminary target engagement of BRAVE when delivered by clinicians within routine EIS care. Seven clinician-client dyads we

Calix[4]arene C-1220 - Modulator of calcium homeostasis and contractile activity in smooth muscle cells.

Regulation of Na+,K+-ATPase activity plays a critical role in maintaining ionic homeostasis and Ca2+-dependent contractility in smooth muscle, yet the contribution of selective sodium pump modulators to myometrial function remains insufficiently understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of calix[4]arene C-1220 (25,27-dipropoxycalix[4]arene-bis-N-tolylsulfonylaminomethylphosphonic acid) and its structural analogue C-99 on ATP-hydrolyzing activities, intracellular Ca2+ dynamics, mitochondrial function, and contractile behavior of uterine smooth muscle. Enzymatic assays showed that C
