A single brain stem substrate mediates the motivational effects of both opiates and food in nondeprived rats but not in deprived rats.

Drug-naive and morphine-dependent rats both preferred places paired with morphine over unfamiliar neutral places. Morphine-dependent, but not naive, rats avoided places paired with the lack of morphine (i.e., withdrawal). Food-sated and food-deprived rats both preferred places paired with food over unfamiliar neutral places. Food-deprived, but not sated, rats avoided places paired with the lack of food (i.e., hunger). Lesions of the tegmental pedunculopontine nucleus (TPP) blocked the morphine- and food-conditioned place preferences in drug-naive and food-sated rats, respectively. TPP lesions

The organization of neural inputs to the medial preoptic nucleus of the rat.

There is general agreement that the medial preoptic nucleus (MPN) receives projections from widespread regions of the brain, although there are significant discrepancies in the literature with regard to certain specific inputs. Therefore, we have reexamined the inputs to this nucleus with both retrograde and anterograde axonal transport techniques. First, injections of the retrograde tracers true blue, SITS, or wheat germ agglutinin were made into the region of the MPN and the distribution of retrogradely labeled cells was charted. Then, autoradiographic material was used to confirm the result

Facial sweating in Horner's syndrome.

The distribution of sweating on the face was studied in 31 patients with Horner's syndrome. In patients whose lesion was known to be distal to the bifurcation of the common carotid artery impairment of sweating was confined to the medial aspect of the forehead and side of the nose. In more proximal lesions loss of sweating involved the whole of one side of the face. Facial sweating was normal in 6 patients with avulsion injuries of the brachial plexus and in 2 patients with a lateral medullary syndrome. These findings suggest that the pattern of sweating in Horner's syndrome may be useful in s

Effect of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus infection on brain choline acetyltransferase and acetylcholinesterase activities.

Mice and rats infected with the Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus showed a significant decrease in the choline acetyltransferase activity of caudate nucleus, hypothalamus, midbrain, hippocampus and frontal cortex. Acetylcholinesterase activity was not affected in any of the same brain regions analyzed. In surviving rats no alterations were observed in the activities of choline acetyltransferase, tyrosine hydroxylase, and glutamate decarboxylase 3 months after the infection.

Disrupted cortico-ponto-cerebellar pathway in patients with hemimegalencephaly.

OBJECTIVE: Cerebellar dysmaturation and injury is associated with a wide range of neuromotor, neurocognitive and behavioral disorders as well as with preterm birth. We used diffusion tensor MR imaging to investigate a disruption in structural cortico-ponto-cerebellar (CPC) connectivity in children with infantile-onset severe epilepsy. METHODS: We performed CPC tract reconstructions in 24 hemimegalencephaly (HME) patients, 28 West syndrome (WS) of unknown etiology patients, and 25 pediatric disease control subjects without a history of epilepsy nor brain abnormality on MRI. To identify the CPC

Severe White Matter Hyperintensity Is Associated with Early Neurological Deterioration in Patients with Isolated Pontine Infarction.

OBJECTIVE: Pontine infarction is a common type of brain stem infarction and early neurological deterioration (END). We evaluated the possibility of severe white matter hyperintensity (WMH) as a predictor of END in isolated pontine infarction. METHODS: We recruited 2 types of patients with isolated pontine infarction within 24 h from symptom onset. END was defined as an increase of ≥1 point on the motor National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) or ≥2 points on the total NIHSS score within 72 h from admission. We graded WMH using Fazekas scale, which is dichotomized into mild (grades 0

Diagnostic accuracy of the magnetic resonance Parkinsonism index and the midbrain-to-pontine area ratio to differentiate progressive supranuclear palsy from Parkinson's disease and the Parkinson variant of multiple system atrophy.

Using magnetic resonance (MR) planimetry, both the midbrain-to-pontine area ratio (m/p-ratio) and the MR parkinsonism index (MRPI) have been shown to assist in the differential diagnosis of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) from Parkinson's disease (PD) and the Parkinson variant of multiple system atrophy (MSA-P). The aim of this study was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of the MRPI compared with the m/p-ratio in a large cohort of 123 patients with neurodegenerative parkinsonism including patients with PSP, PD, and MSA-P. Patients with PSP had significant higher MRPI values and signifi

Perverted head shaking nystagmus in focal pontine infarction.

Although several papers have been published on perverted head shaking nystagmus (PHSN) associated with focal brainstem or cerebellar lesion, there are no reports of a focal pontine infarct that causes PHSN. We report a patient with focal pontine infarction who presented with sustained dizziness, limb dysmetria on the left extremity, decreased sensations to position and vibration of the left extremity, and gait imbalance. Only vestibular abnormality was downbeat nystagmus after vigorous head shakings. The maximum slow phase velocity of PHSN was 26°/s, and its duration was about 20s. This is the

Adrenergic mechanisms of the Kölliker-Fuse/A7 area on the control of water and sodium intake.

The blockade of serotoninergic receptors with methysergide or the activation of alpha(2)-adrenoceptors with moxonidine into the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN) increases water and 0.3 M NaCl intake in rats treated with furosemide (FURO) combined with captopril (CAP). In the present study we investigated the effects of bilateral injections of noradrenaline (the endogenous neurotransmitter for alpha-adrenoceptors) alone or combined with the alpha(2)-adrenoceptor antagonist RX 821002 into the LPBN or into the rostral portion of the Kölliker-Fuse nucleus that includes also the A7 area (KF/A7 a

Hemorrhage in brain stem cavernoma presenting with torticollis.

Spasmodic torticollis due to an identified focal brain stem lesion is uncommon and abrupt-onset spasmodic torticollis due to midbrain lesions in humans is rarely reported. A 9-year-old female child who had fallen off a bicycle and had lost consciousness for 10 min, vomiting 2-3 times, developed acute torticollis immediately after the injury. Examinations suggested hemorrhage in brain stem cavernoma. A search of the literature written in English revealed that this type of presentation has not been reported previously.

Diagnosing disconjugate eye movements: phase-plane analysis of horizontal saccades.

BACKGROUND: Saccades are fast eye movements that conjugately shift the point of fixation between distant features of interest in the visual environment. Several disorders, affecting sites from brainstem to extraocular muscle, may cause horizontal saccades to become disconjugate. Prior techniques for detection of saccadic disconjugacy, especially in internuclear ophthalmoparesis (INO), have compared only one point in abducting vs adducting saccades, such as peak velocity. METHODS: We applied a phase-plane technique that compared each eye's velocity as a function of change in position (normaliz

[The character of glial line-cell derived neurotrophic factor mRNA expression in a facial nerve-striking model].

OBJECTIVE: It has been known that glial line-cell derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) has the nutritional and protective effect in motor neurons. In this experiment, we investigated the character of GDNF mRNA expression in a facial nerve-striking model; combined with other scholars' experimental results; and analyzed what role GDNF plays in the regeneration process of injured motor nerves. METHODS: We established a striking model in rabbit facial nerves with a striking gun with the striking velocity of 10 m/s and the total striking energy of 7.5 J. Then we detected the GDNF mRNA expression in

Regional metabolic changes in the pedunculopontine nucleus of unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine Parkinson's model rats.

The pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) located in the mesopontine tegmentum is innervated by descending projections from nuclei in the basal ganglia. The present study was performed to determine whether nigrostriatal dopaminergic neuron degeneration is associated with changes in PPN metabolic activity. Unilateral nigrostriatal lesioning was performed by injecting 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) into the substantia nigra pars compacta in 10 rats. Six of these animals exhibited apomorphine-induced rotations contralateral to the lesion and were included in the experimental group for determination of regio
