Pathophysiology of autism spectrum disorders: revisiting gastrointestinal involvement and immune imbalance.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) comprise a group of neurodevelopmental abnormalities that begin in early childhood and are characterized by impairment of social communication and behavioral problems including restricted interests and repetitive behaviors. Several genes have been implicated in the pathogenesis of ASD, most of them are involved in neuronal synaptogenesis. A number of environmental factors and associated conditions such as gastrointestinal (GI) abnormalities and immune imbalance have been linked to the pathophysiology of ASD. According to the March 2012 report released by United

Movement dysfunction following repetitive hand opening and closing: anatomical analysis in Owl monkeys.

Repetitive strain injuries are thought to result from biomechanical stress and tissue microtrauma. The purpose of this study was to investigate the presence of local inflammation, scarring or anatomical variations of the flexor tendons and the median and ulnar nerves in four Owl monkeys behaviorally trained at a repetitive motor or sensory task. Three monkeys were trained to repetitively open and close a handpiece. The two monkeys that used rapid, stereotypical hand squeezing developed a task-specific movement dysfunction (one in 5 weeks and one in 24 weeks). The third monkey used a variable s

Addiction spectrum disorder: a conceptual framework for comprehensive understanding of addictive disorders.

The term addiction or addictive disorder refers to a psychiatric condition that is characterized impulsive and compulsive seeking targets or action executions despite negative consequences are expected to occur. However, it has been used to lump widely heterogeneous conditions, such as substance use disorders, behavioral addictions, and food addiction, together, which has been causing a serious problem in understanding and defining the addictive disorder. Here we deliberate a framework toward comprehensive understanding of addictive disorders that overcome the heterogeneities of substance use

Launching forward: The integration of behavioral health in primary care as a key strategy for promoting young child wellness.

In 2008, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) created a national grant program, Project LAUNCH (Linking Actions for Unmet Needs in Children's Health), to improve behavioral health and developmental outcomes for young children through the incorporation of prevention and wellness promotion practices in key early childhood settings. Project LAUNCH supports states, tribal nations, and territories to improve coordination across early childhood systems and implement 5 core strategies of prevention and promotion. This article focuses on the lessons learned from 1 of

Drugs and sexual behavior.

This study investigated the association between drugs and sexual behavior in a sample of polydrug substance abusers recruited from several Italian therapeutic communities; participants were 90 polydrug substance abusers (opiates, cocaine, amphetamine, inhalants, marijuana/sedatives or hallucinogens abusers) who were compared with 90 nonsubstance-abusing individuals. Sexual behavior was measured by the Italian version of the Sex and the Average Woman (or Man; SAWM), a questionnaire that assesses different kind of sexual attitudes. Results showed that drug-abusing individuals are particularly in

Preventing or improving obesity by addressing specific eating patterns.

The problem of obesity and overweight is an epidemic in the United States. Weight is a product of energy balance: energy intake versus energy expenditure. The purpose of this review is to identify adult eating behaviors that are known to strongly affect the energy intake side of the energy balance and that may be readily amenable to prevention and intervention efforts in primary care. Restaurant and fast food consumption, large portion sizes, and consumption of beverages with sugar added increase energy intake and are highly associated with weight gain and obesity. Conversely, consumption of l

Medication sleuth: an important role for pharmacists in determining the etiology of delirium.

Delirium is characterized by disturbances of consciousness, attention, cognition, and perception and is the most common reason for acute cognitive dysfunction in hospitalized elderly patients. Causes of delirium can be multifactorial, and a careful medical and medication history can help determine the underlying cause of behavioral disturbances. A 65-year-old patient with a history of chronic pain, insomnia, and multiple medical problems, who presented with altered mental status and aggressive behavior, is described. The patient had taken an overdose of zolpidem prior to admission, and she req

Relation between empathy and aggression and behavior compliance among abused group home youth.

Physically abused youth are often described as more aggressive and noncompliant in comparison with normal children, despite inconclusive findings regarding the nature of behavior problems among these youth. The present study investigated whether empathy would be differentially related to aggression and behavior compliance of abused youth within the natural living context of a group home environment. As predicted, results suggest a strong, positive relationship between empathy and lower rates of interpersonal aggression and a strong positive relationship between empathy and higher rates of beha

"Growing pains": clinical and behavioral correlates in a community sample.

Parents of 183 children identified them as having "pain in arms, legs, or joints during the previous 12 months." This group was compared with a group of children without pains selected randomly from the rest of a 1605-member community-based cohort in a study of chronic illness. The pains were most likely to be deep seated, to involve predominantly the lower limbs, and to be described in vague, nonspecific terms. These children were significantly more likely to have recurrent abdominal pain, a negative mood, and behavior problems, and to be aggressive, anxious, and hyperactive. There were no di

Affect and self-regulation in binge eaters: effects of activating family images.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the impact of activating internalized family images on affective states and behavioral self-regulation. METHOD: Sixty-four female binge eaters and normal controls were randomly assigned to family- or neutral-state inductions. RESULTS: The family induction had a differentially negative impact on binge eaters. When their family images were activated, binge eaters felt more negatively about the experiment, more hostile, experienced greater sensations of hunger, and were more preoccupied with their family images than their counterparts in the other groups. Temperament and school-aged children's coping abilities and responses to stress.

To measure children's temperament and coping abilities, we administered the Stress Impact Scale to sixty 9- to 12-year-old children. Trained observers also completed an observational rating scale of coping behavior, the Coping Inventory, for each of the participants. The Stress Response Scale and Middle Childhood Temperament Questionnaire were completed by the mothers of the participants. Results showed that activity level was most predictive of effective coping as observed in the school environment. Dimensions of temperament that were most closely associated with less difficult responses to s

[Excessive gambling in prisoners. A statistical study of 72 criminals of various crime categories].

After a brief introduction into the psychiatric problems of pathological gambling, the author presents a statistical study on 72 delinquents, amongst them 14 excessive gamblers. The special design of this investigation consists in two comparative studies between the gambling and the non-gambling subgroups, first within the total of delinquents secondly within the group of the drugs- and property-offenders. There is a great number of traits compared concerning e.g. family history, personal biography, social status, drug-consumption-behavior and clinical traits. It is clearly shown that excessiv

Assessment of brain function in clinical pediatric research: behavioral and biological strategies.

Psychobiological research in child psychiatry requires rigorous assessment of behavior and multiple perspectives on brain function through neurochemical, neuroendocrine, psychophysiological, and other advanced methods. The serious neuropsychiatric disorders of childhood, such as autism, attention deficit disorder, and language disorders, can be studied in complementary clinical protocols aimed at explicating patterns of behavioral and metabolic dysfunction which characterize various clinical syndromes. Clinical research with children raises sensitive ethical issues; the ethical problems can be

Understanding the Psychological Profile of Children and Youth Engaging in Sexual Contact with non-Human Animals: A Scoping Review.

It is developmentally normal for children to display some sexual behaviors but concerning sexual behaviors (CSBs) that deviate from societal norms are potentially harmful. The development of CSBs is influenced by various factors, including family dynamics, parental stressors, and disruptions in psychosexual development. Historically, sexual abuse was seen as the primary cause of CSBs, but current research suggests that nonsexual abuse and family environment also play significant roles. This scoping review synthesized literature on the psychological characteristics of children and youth who eng

Behavioral disorders in Parkinson disease: current view.

Patients with Parkinson disease (PD) frequently experience several behavioral symptoms, such as anxiety, apathy, irritability, agitation, impulsive control and obsessive-compulsive or REM sleep behavior disorders, which can cause severe psychosocial problems and impair quality of life. Occurring in 30-70% of PD patients, these symptoms can manifest at early stages of the disease, sometimes even before the appearance of classic motor symptoms, while others can develop later. Behavioral changes in PD show distinct patterns of brain atrophy, dopaminergic and serotonergic deterioration, altered ne
