The selenocysteine-containing protein SELENOT maintains dopamine signaling in the midbrain to protect mice from hyperactivity disorder.

Dopaminergic neuron dysfunction has been implicated in multiple neurological and psychiatric disorders. SELENOT is a selenocysteine-containing protein of the ER membrane with antioxidant and neuroprotective activities, but its pathophysiological role in dopaminergic neurons remains unclear. In this study we show that male mice with SELENOT-deficient dopaminergic neurons exhibit attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)-like symptoms, including hyperlocomotion, recognition memory deficits, repetitive movements, and impulsivity. Dopamine metabolism, extrasynaptic dopamine levels, spontaneo

Exploring the role of the amygdala in Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder via a parcellation pipeline based on Recurrence Quantification Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Despite the inclusion of Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD) in the ICD-11, there are many open questions on its neuronal pathogenesis, especially regarding the role of the amygdala. In this study, we aimed to further unravel this issue via a parcellation method based on Recurrence Quantification Analysis (RQA). METHODS: The RQA pipeline was applied to resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data from 45 heterosexual males with CSBD and 26 Healthy Controls. Each amygdala was divided into two subdivisions in each group. In the CSBD group, the scores of p

Relationship Between Resultant Force Vector Acting on Human Organs From Food Bolus and the Bolus Configuration During Swallowing Using Numerical Swallowing Simulation With Moving Particle Simulation Method.

This study investigates the forces exerted on organs during swallowing, specifically focusing on identifying forces other than those resulting from direct organ contact. Using a swallowing simulator based on the moving particle method, we simulated the swallowing process of healthy individuals upon the ingestion of thickened foods, which were simulated as shear-thinning flow without yield stress. We extracted the resultant force vectors acting on the organs and shape of the bolus at each time interval. The simulation results confirmed that the bolus originates from tongue movement and is trans

The association between minority stressors, intraminority stressors, and borderline personality disorder symptomatology among sexual minority men.

Sexual minority men are more likely to be diagnosed with borderline personality disorder compared to their heterosexual counterparts. Minority stressors have been associated with criteria for borderline personality disorder (e.g., substance use, suicidality, impulsive behaviors, and interpersonal difficulties with rejection). However, to date, there are no known studies examining the association between traditional minority and intraminority stressors and borderline personality disorder symptomatology. The purpose of the study is to examine the association between traditional and intraminority…

Consensus Paper: Cerebellum and Reward.

Cerebellum is a key-structure for the modulation of motor, cognitive, social and affective functions, contributing to automatic behaviours through interactions with the cerebral cortex, basal ganglia and spinal cord. The predictive mechanisms used by the cerebellum cover not only sensorimotor functions but also reward-related tasks. Cerebellar circuits appear to encode temporal difference error and reward prediction error. From a chemical standpoint, cerebellar catecholamines modulate the rate of cerebellar-based cognitive learning, and mediate cerebellar contributions during complex behaviour

Youth involvement in serious physical violence and political violence: Similarities and differences in risk factors.

INTRODUCTION: Youth involvement in violence and delinquency has received widespread attention in the literature. However, little is known about youth involvement in political violence, especially among youth who live in conflict areas. The current study examined the mechanisms that underlie youth involvement in serious physical and political violence. We explored the similarities and differences in the association between both individual factors (including religiosity and school commitment) and parental factors (including parental control and education), and the two types of violent behaviors.

Factitious dermatitis in children and adolescents is highly comorbid with psychiatric disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Factitious dermatitis (FD) is a psychocutaneous disorder characterized by self-induced skin lesions. FD is related to mental illness, but the correlation is poorly defined in the pediatric population. Our study aims to investigate the risk of psychiatric disorders diagnosed after the FD diagnosis in children and adolescents. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study over a seven-year period (2016-2022) to measure the incidence and risk ratio of psychiatric disorders in patients under age 19 years. The FD cohort was defined as patients with FD (International Classification

Low serum allopregnanolone levels in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has increasing evidence for the role of neurohormones in its etiopathogenesis. It has been suggested that the effects of neurosteroids on the brain in the early developmental period may predispose to neurodevelopmental pathologies. In our study, we examined serum dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S), and allopregnanolone levels in children with ADHD and whether these neurosteroids differ in the presence of specific learning disorder (SLD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) comorbidities (ADHD+SLD and ADHD+OD

Online parent training platform for complementary treatment of disruptive behavior disorders in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: A randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is associated with a diversity of impairments and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is a very frequent comorbidity. Parent Training, as an evidence-based intervention, seems effective in reducing externalizing/disruptive behaviors, possibly leading to a better prognosis. This clinical trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an online parent training model as a complementary treatment for ADHD and ODD. METHODS: Patients and their families will be screened upon their entry into the Research Center of Impulsivity and Attention (NI

Olfaction and Executive Cognitive Performance: A Systematic Review.

Objective tests of olfaction are widely available to aid in the assessment of olfaction. Their clearest role is in the characterization of olfactory changes, either reported by or suspected in a patient. There is a rapidly growing literature concerned with the association of olfactory changes with certain neuropsychiatric conditions and the use of olfactory testing to supplement conventional assessments in clinical and research practice is evolving. Neural pathways important for olfactory processing overlap extensively with pathways important for cognitive functioning, and especially those imp

Conduct Problems and Adherence to COVID-19 Guidelines: A Developmental Psychopathology-Informed Approach.

COVID-19 underscores the importance of understanding variation in adherence to rules concerning health behaviors. Children with conduct problems have difficulty with rule adherence, and linking early conduct problems with later adherence to COVID-19 guidelines can provide new insight into public health. The current study employed a sample (N = 744) designed to examine the longitudinal consequences of childhood conduct problems (Mean age at study entry = 8.39). The first objective was to link early conduct problems with later adherence to both general and specific COVID-19 guidelines during eme

Cholecystokinin-Mediated Neuromodulation of Anxiety and Schizophrenia: A "Dimmer-Switch" Hypothesis.

Cholecystokinin (CCK), the most abundant brain neuropeptide, is involved in relevant behavioral functions like memory, cognition, and reward through its interactions with the opioid and dopaminergic systems in the limbic system. CCK excites neurons by binding two receptors, CCK1 and CCK2, expressed at low and high levels in the brain, respectively. Historically, CCK2 receptors have been related to the induction of panic attacks in humans. Disturbances in brain CCK expression also underlie the physiopathology of schizophrenia, which is attributed to the modulation by CCK1 receptors of the dopam

Reinforcement and Compensatory Mechanisms in Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Systematic Review of Case-Control Studies.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neuropsychological disorder that causes inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness in patients. Ventral striatal hypo-responsiveness, orbitofrontal cortex, and dopaminergic status in the brain are related to the pathogenesis of ADHD. Reinforcement tasks by monetary incentive delay (MID) was shown to produce more responsiveness in patients. In this study, we reviewed how reinforcement interventions and compensatory mechanisms affect the behavior of ADHD patients. This systematic review was undertaken as per the Preferred Reporting Item
