Heterogeneity in psychiatric responses to disease specific diagnosis is demonstrated for two groups of cancer patients who are comparable in prognosis and treatment intensity. Implications of this heterogeneity are drawn for etiological study and for planning psychiatric interventions.

The background to social and emotional deprivation is discussed and applied to a study of kwashiorkor in East African children. A group of 107 children with kwashiorkor was compared with 111 controls. Age, sex and tribe were all found to have significances of their own: fifty of each group were therefore matched for these three factors. Demographic, psychosocial and medical risk factors for postpartum depression (PPD) were studied prospectively in a community cohort of 288 Israeli women. An Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale score of > or = 10 at 6 weeks postpartum was the criterion for PPD. Psychosocial risk factors were found to be the most potent. Lack of social support, marital disharmony, depressive symptoms during pregnancy, history of emotional problems and prolonged infant health problems were most predictive of PPD. This study compared 96 women and 58 men suffering from panic disorder with agoraphobia. Participants completed questionnaires assessing various clinical features associated with panic disorder with agoraphobia (PDA), general adjustment, and drug/alcohol use. Results showed that PDA is a more severe condition in women. The purpose of the study was to examine what kind of effect a relative with chronic pain had on his or her partner and the other members of the family. The methodology used was grounded theory. The sample was a convenience group of 18 chronic pain sufferers, their partners, and one adult child taken from two pain clinics. All traumatic SCI patients in Iceland come to the Neurosurgical Department of Borgarspítalinn, the City Hospital in Reykjavík for their initial treatment. From 1973-1989, 79 (93%) were rehabilitated at Borgarspítalinn. The purpose of this study was to look at the most common complications and the social functions of SCI patients after discharge from the Rehabilitation Department. For 1986, 219,470 live births were reported for residents of Canada's 25 Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs). For each of these births, street address information as shown on the birth registration was used to code the census tract where the mother lived.
