Highly efficient and selective catalysts for the asymmetric reduction of aryl alkyl ketones under hydrogen-transfer conditions (2-propanol) were obtained by combining a novel class of pseudo-dipeptide ligands with [[RuCl(2)(p-cymene)](2)]. A library of 36 dipeptide-like ligands was prepared from N-Boc-protected alpha-amino acids and the enantiomers of 2-amino-1-phenylethanol and 1-amino-2-propanol. A Rh porphyrin on carbon black was shown to catalyze the electro-oxidation of several aliphatic alcohols (ethanol, 1-propanol, and 2-propanol) and benzyl alcohols. The overpotentials for alcohol oxidation were very low. The reaction mechanism and substrate specificity are discussed.

This paper presents the possibilities of separation of yttrium(III)-neodymium(III) and samarium(III)-neodymium(III) pairs by frontal analysis on strongly basic anion-exchangers Wofatit SBW, Wofatit SBK and Lewatit MP 5080 in the systems: 90% (v/v) 2-propanol-10% (v/v) 7 M HNO3 and 90% (v/v) 1-propanol-10% (v/v) 7 M HNO3. The best results are obtained on Lewatit MP 5080 in the 90% (v/v) 2-propanol-10% (v/v) 7 M HNO3 system. In this system, on 1 dm3 of this anion-exchanger, 1.95 kg yttrium(III) and 0.3 kg samarium(III) were purified decreasing the microcomponent content to below 10(-3)%.

A partial switch in mechanism for the partial oxidation of alcohols on nickel surfaces can be induced by substitution of gamma-hydrogens with more electronegative fluorine atoms. While exclusive dehydrogenation to acetone via beta-hydride elimination from 2-propoxide surface species is seen with 2-propanol, some dehydration to 3,3,3-trfluoropropene is observed with 1,1,1-trifluoro-2-propanol. The latter reaction involves a gamma-hydride elimination rate-limiting step.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is metabolized by a Gram-negative aerobic bacterium via a novel pathway involving oxidative skeletal rearrangement of the BPA. The binding properties of six indolocarbazole derivative have been measured using immobilised human serum albumin (HSA) in an HPLC column. The compounds showed very strong binding to HSA which necessitated the application of a 30 to 40% concentration of 2-propanol in the mobile phase. This represents a much higher concentration than is recommended by the column manufacturers.
