ABO-mismatched platelet and plasma transfusion practices and the potential for transfusion-related alpha-gal syndrome: The Biomedical Excellence for Safer Transfusion Collaborative Study.

BACKGROUND: Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is caused by IgE antibodies against the alpha-gal oligosaccharide, which is structurally similar to the Group B antigen. Recent case reports of severe allergic transfusion reactions (ATRs) in Group O patients receiving Group B plasma and platelets raise the possibility of a new adverse event, herein called transfusion-related AGS (TRAGS). The primary goal of this study was to assess the frequency of Groups B and AB plasma and platelet transfusions to Group O patients. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: In this multi-site retrospective study, participating sites sub

Transfusing maternal blood to her newborn baby-irrespective of ABO mismatch.

Background: Though blood transfusions are the common procedures in pediatric patients, transfusion reactions are rare in children. Though in adults, uncross-matched ABO group-specific blood is used in emergencies, there are no such reports in neonates and children. There are stray case reports about transfusing maternal blood for her baby and maternal blood is de facto compatible regardless of an ABO mismatchObjective: Confirming our previous hypothesis that maternal blood is compatible with her baby's blood; and maternal blood can be used for transfusion in her newborn baby irrespective of AB

The in vitro effect of anti-A and anti-AB alloantibodies on group A and AB Platelets.

There is no evidence of ultrastructural damage as assessed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy on the exposure of group A and AB human platelets to the appropriate anti-A and anti-AB alloantibody and complement. There was also no evidence of platelet aggregation under the above circumstances. These in vitro findings support the view that an ABO mismatch is not an absolute contraindication to platelet transfusion.

The impact of ABO compatibility on allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation outcomes: a contemporary and comprehensive study from the transplant complications working party of the EBMT.

The role of ABO blood group system mismatch on allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) outcomes is controversial since current publications of large datasets are lacking. We retrospectively analyzed 30,487 patients transplanted between 2010 and 2021 using the EBMT registry to assess ABO incompatibility's effect on non-relapse mortality (NRM), overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), relapse incidence (RI), acute GvHD (aGvHD), chronic GvHD (cGvHD), and neutrophil engraftment. Transplantations were classified as ABO-compatible (56.3%), major (18.1%), minor (20.1%)

Relationship between ABO blood group and pregnancy complications: a systematic literature analysis.

Given the expression of ABO blood group antigens on the surface of a wide range of human cells and tissues, the putative interplay of the ABO system in human biology outside the area of transfusion and transplantation medicine constitutes an intriguing byway of research. Thanks to evidence accumulated over more than 50 years, the involvement of the ABO system in the pathogenesis of several human diseases, including cardiovascular, infectious and neoplastic disorders, is now acknowledged. However, there is controversial information on the potential association between ABO blood type and adverse

Correlation of ABO Blood Groups and Rh Factor with The Severity of Generalized Chronic Periodontitis: Across Sectional Study in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: The development of periodontal diseases depends on the presence of causative microorganisms, host immunity and risk factors. Although variability present among the types of periodontal diseases, all are represented to a shared interaction between host and bacteria. ABO blood groups are the most investigated erythrocyte antigen system. However, limited investigations have been conducted to explore the alliance between ABO blood groups and periodontal diseases. AIM: Our purpose was to explore any possible association between the severity of chronic periodontitis with ABO blood group

Blood group A and D negativity are associated with symptomatic West Nile virus infection.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) infection is mostly asymptomatic (AS) but 20% of subjects report WNV fever and 1% of patients experience neurologic diseases with higher rates in elderly and immunosuppressed persons. With no treatment and no vaccine to prevent the development of symptomatic (S) infections, it is essential to understand prognostic factors influencing S disease outcome. Host genetic background has been linked to the development of WNV neuroinvasive disease. This study investigates the association between the ABO and D blood group status and WNV disease outcome. [O negative blood for everyone? No, transfusion and obstetrical management of a pregnant woman with an anti-public H1I1 antibody].

A woman pregnant with her first child, blood group B+, showed pan-agglutination on antibody identification panels during her pregnancy follow-up. The absence of agglutination between the patient's plasma and a panel of B-phenotype red blood cells led to the conclusion of the presence of an anti-H1I1. This antibody is not thought to be responsible for fetal anemia or neonatal hemolytic disease, thus follow-up of fetal anemia is not necessary. However, in the event of transfusion, prior compatibility with blood of the same ABO group is necessary. In emergencies, group O depot blood should not be

The Allelic and Phenotypic Frequencies of the ABO and Rh Blood Types in Pregnant Women in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Background: ABO-rhesus (Rh) blood testing screens blood types according to the antigenic properties of red blood cells. Objective: This study reports the allelic and phenotypic frequency distribution of the ABO and Rh blood groups in pregnant women who attended antenatal care (ANC) at Zewditu Memorial Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and the likelihood for the occurrence of erythroblastosis fetalis (E. fetalis). Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on pregnant women who attended ANC from 2015 to 2019 and typed for ABO and Rh blood groups. The Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was used to de

Hyperbilirubinemia in neonates with blood group incompatibilities - A bane or a boon for the management.

OBJECTIVES: Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, or newborn jaundice, is a common condition caused by high bilirubin levels. Blood group incompatibility between mother and baby is a major cause. This study examined the link between different blood group incompatibilities and their management in newborns with jaundice. MATERIAL & METHODS: This prospective observational study included 190 neonates with hyperbilirubinemia requiring phototherapy. They were divided into two groups: control (blood group compatible) and case (blood group incompatible). Data on demographics, investigations, and management we

[Meta analysis of the effect of immunoglobulin infusion on neonatal isoimmune hemolytic disease caused by blood group incompatibility].

OBJECTIVE: Neonatal isoimmune hemolytic disease is still one of the major causes of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. The infants with severe hemolysis even need phototherapy and exchange transfusion. Early intravenous immunoglobulin infusion may block hemolysis to some extent. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of immunoglobulin infusion on neonatal isoimmune hemolytic disease by meta analysis. METHOD: All randomized controlled trials on the effect of immunoglobulin infusion on neonatal Rh and ABO incompatible hemolytic disease obtained by searching MEDLINE, Cochrane Library,

Population genetics of the ABO locus within the rhesus (Macaca mulatta) and cynomolgus (M. fascicularis) macaque hybrid zone.

Knowledge of the macaque ABO blood group system has been critical in the development of nonhuman primates (NHPs) as a translational model. Serving not only as a useful homologue of the disease-linked ABO system in humans, macaque ABO blood groups must be typed in colonies prior to performing experimental procedures requiring blood transfusion or transplantation. While the rates of blood type incompatibility and the distributions of A, B and AB blood groups are known in large samples of rhesus (Macaca mulatta) and cynomolgus (M. fascicularis) macaques, there is a dearth of blood type data from

SHOT conference report 2016: serious hazards of transfusion - human factors continue to cause most transfusion-related incidents.

The Annual SHOT Report for incidents reported in 2015 was published on 7 July at the SHOT symposium. Once again, the majority of reports (77·7%) were associated with mistakes ('human factors'). Pressures and stress in the hospital environment contributed to several error reports. There were 26 deaths where transfusion played a part, one due to haemolysis from anti-Wra (units issued electronically). The incidence of haemolysis due to this antibody has increased in recent years. Transfusion-associated circulatory overload is the most common contributor to death and major morbidity. Reports of de

Comparison of manual hematocrit determinations versus automated methods for hematopoietic progenitor cell apheresis products.

BACKGROUND: Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell donor selection is based primarily on human leukocyte antigen degree of match and it often occurs without regard to the red blood cell (RBC) compatibility between donor and recipient. When major ABO-mismatched grafts are infused, it is imperative that an accurate determination of the incompatible RBC content is made to ensure that the product is safe for infusion. RBC content determination requires the hematocrit (Hct) parameter which can be obtained via manual (directly measured) or automated (calculated) methods. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Ninet
