Fiber technology for reliable repair of skeletal muscle.

Conventional soft-tissue reclosure methods-sutures and staples-require substantial organized-collagen content. Some tissues lack extensive intrinsic collagenous content. Wound disruption consequences range from newly closed abdominal wounds bursting open, to post-cesarean wombs splitting at delivery, to heart valves loosening. Although sutures do approach the theoretical limit of normal force transfer-cross-sectional area times compressive strength, a different paradigm-shear force transfer across the far greater surface attainable by fine fibers parallel to the potential disruptive force coul

Thorax Dynamic Modeling and Biomechanical Analysis of Chest Breathing in Supine Lying Position.

During respiration, the expansion and contraction of the chest and abdomen are coupled with each other, presenting a complex torso movement pattern. A finite element (FE) model of chest breathing based on the HUMOS2 human body model was developed. One-dimensional muscle units with active contraction functions were incorporated into the model based on Hill's active muscle model so as to generate muscle contraction forces that can change over time. The model was validated by comparing it to the surface displacement of the chest and abdomen during respiration. Then, the mechanism of the coupled m

Effectiveness Index of Mechanical Energy Utilization in Male 400-m Sprinters and the Relation Between Muscle Cross-Sectional Area of the Trunk and the Lower Limb.

The purpose of this study was to identify the morphological characteristics of trunk and lower limb muscles associated with 400-m sprint performance and "effectiveness index of mechanical energy utilization (EI)." Twelve male 400-m sprinters (age: 21.4 ± 1.7 years, 400-m best time: 48.38 ± 1.80 s) participated in this study. Using a 3-T magnetic resonance imaging system, we measured muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) of the key trunk and lower limb muscles, including the rectus abdominis, lateral abdominal wall, erector spinae, psoas major, adductors, quadriceps femoris, hamstrings, dorsiflexor

Obturator hernia associated with inclusion body myositis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Inclusion body myositis is a progressive muscle disease characterized by weakness, specifically in the flexor digitorum profundus and quadriceps muscles, and commonly affects men over 50 years of age. No previous reports have examined the impact of inclusion body myositis on the internal and external obturator muscles. This case study suggests that inclusion body myositis-related fat infiltration of internal and external obturator muscles may contribute to obturator hernia. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 75-year-old Japanese woman admitted for management of an obturat

Evaluation of the internal oblique, external oblique, and transversus abdominalis muscles in patients with ankylosing spondylitis: an ultrasonographic study.

The objectives of the study are to compare abdominal muscle thickness in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients with healthy subjects and determine the factors affecting these muscle thickness. Thirty-five male patients with a previous diagnosis of AS according to the Modified New York criteria and a control group consisting of 35 healthy male individuals were included in this cross-sectional and case-control study. Thicknesses of the internal oblique (IO), external oblique (EO), and transversus abdominalis (TrA) muscles were measured with ultrasound (US). AS patients were classified according t

Spinal-Related Musculoskeletal Factors and Functional Abdominal Bloating in Females: A Case Control Study in a Population-Based Prospective Cohort.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Functional abdominal bloating (FAB) is defined as a subjective sensation of increased abdominal pressure and is more common in females. Due to the proximity to the abdominal wall spinal related factors of curvature, abdominal muscle function may be related to FAB. This study aimed to compare spinal-related musculoskeletal factors between females with and without FAB. METHODS: This was a case-control study of 90 females aged 18-60 years categorized as FAB (n = 45, mean age 39.24 ± 7.40 years) and control (n = 45, mean age 38.56 ± 7.45 years) groups. Abdominal epilepsia partialis continua in neurocysticercosis.

Epilepsia partialis continua (EPC) of abdominal muscles is a rare entity with variable clinical localization and aetiology. A 25-year-old man presented with sudden onset of intermittent focal myoclonic movements involving the abdominal muscles on the right side exclusively, lasting from 20 minutes to an hour. Brain MRI revealed a ring-enhancing lesion, suggestive of cysticercal granuloma over the left precentral gyrus. The patient fulfilled the revised diagnostic criteria for definitive diagnosis of neurocysticercosis. EEG did not show focal abnormalities during the events. Episodes of EPC wer…

Subcostal nerve injury after laparoscopic lipoma surgery: an unusual culprit for an unusual complication.

Endoscopic surgery has revolutionized the field of minimally invasive surgery. Nerve injury after laparoscopic surgery is presumably rare, with only scarce reports in the literature; however, the use of these techniques for new purposes presents the opportunity for novel complications. The authors report a case of subcostal nerve injury after an anterior laparoscopic approach to a posterior abdominal wall lipoma.A 62-year-old woman presented with a left abdominal flank bulge (pseudohernia) that developed after laparoscopic posterior flank wall lipoma resection. Imaging demonstrated frank ballo

Imaging Insights Into Abdominal Wall Function.

PURPOSE: The successful repair of any complex ventral hernia requires a thorough understanding of the underlying anatomical defect and its functional context. We describe an improved "functional" approach to CT imaging of the abdominal wall that can facilitate this understanding and assist surgical planning. METHODS: This invited article reports the observational experience gained from the functional abdominal wall CT examinations of 88 patients who underwent complex ventral hernia repair using pre-operative Botulinum toxin A (BTA) infiltration of the lateral oblique abdominal muscles as well…

Validity of Estimation of Pelvic Floor Muscle Activity from Transperineal Ultrasound Imaging in Men.

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between displacement of pelvic floor landmarks observed with transperineal ultrasound imaging and electromyography of the muscles hypothesised to cause the displacements. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three healthy men participated in this study, which included ultrasound imaging of the mid-urethra, urethra-vesical junction, ano-rectal junction and bulb of the penis. Fine-wire electromyography electrodes were inserted into the puborectalis and bulbocavernosus muscles and a transurethral catheter electrode recorded striated urethral sphincter electromyography.

[Camptocormia--segmental dystonia. Proposal of a new definition for an old disease].

Camptocormia is defined as a forced posture with a forward-bent trunk which appears during standing and sitting. It was first described in 1818 by Brodie. In the last 100 years, numerous cases were observed. A psychogenic origin was presumed in most cases. We describe four patients with typical symptoms of camptocormia who present with the clinical and electromyographical criteria of a segmental dystonia. A new classification of camptocormia is proposed including (1) the primary form, a segmental dystonia of the abdominal wall muscles and (2) secondary forms. Among other conditions (psychogeni

Respiratory muscle ultrasonography evaluation and its clinical application in stroke patients: A review.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory muscle ultrasound is a widely available, highly feasible technique that can be used to study the contribution of the individual respiratory muscles related to respiratory dysfunction. Stroke disrupts multiple functions, and the respiratory function is often significantly decreased in stroke patients. METHOD: A search of the MEDLINE, Web of Science, and PubMed databases was conducted. We identified studies measuring respiratory muscles in healthy and patients by ultrasonography. Two reviewers independently extracted and documented data regarding to the criteria. Data we

Non-traumatic myositis ossificans circumscripta in the anterior abdominal wall of a seven-year-old Ugandan child: A case report.

Myositis ossificans circumscripta (MOC) is a benign and self-limiting heterotopic ossification in the subcutaneous fat, tendons, muscles, and nerves. It is commonly due to trauma and is frequently encountered in the arm, shoulder, thigh, and hand which are prone to trauma. Non-traumatic MOC arising from the abdominal muscles is extremely rare. We report a case of 7-year-old male child with a three-year history of progressive painless abdominal swelling in the left hypochondria region with no history of associated trauma. CT scan of the abdomen showed a well-defined hyperdense mass in the left …

Prune belly syndrome and fetal ascites.

A case of prune belly syndrome (PBS) in a 22 week male fetus is described. All the features characteristic of the syndrome were present: absence of abdominal muscle; dilatation of the bladder, ureters, and renal pelves; and undescended testes. In addition, there was marked ascites. The rectus abdominis muscles were entirely absent whereas other abdominal muscles were only absent centrally. Between regions of normal and absent musculature muscle fibers were sparse, enlarged, frequently disrupted, and mostly in the myotubule stage. The prostate was thin-walled and its urethra greatly expanded. T…
