We reviewed clinical and electrodiagnostic features of 16 patients with neoplastic brachial plexopathy (NBP) and 17 patients with radiation-induced plexopathy (RBP). The groups were similar in symptom-free interval after cancer diagnosis and location of the plexus lesions. NBP patients had pain and Horner's syndrome; RBP patients had paresthesias, but rarely Horner's. NBP patients presented earlier after symptom onset and had a shorter course. RBP patients more frequently had abnormal sensory and normal motor nerve conduction studies and characteristically had fasciculations or myokymia on EMG

Traumatic brain injury is an important public health problem all over the world. Cranial radiation is routinely and increasingly used to manage various types of tumors. Both traumatic brain injury and brain radiotherapy are a frequent and overlooked cause of abnormalities in hypothalamic-pituitary axis function or sometimes even of overt pituitary disorders altering patients' health and quality of life. Because clinical manifestations may be subtle and develop insidiously many years after injury or radiotherapy, establishing a correct diagnosis is not always straightforward. Diagnosis of hypop

Hydroxyurea (HU) is commonly used for the treatment of chronic myelogenous leukaemia, polycythemia vera and essential thrombocythaemia. Patients receiving HU present a number of side-effects including skin/mucosa changes and tumours. Mucocutaneous abnormalities include xerosis, ichthyosiform lesions, dark brown pigmentation of skin folds and nails, malleolar ulcers, oral mucositis and oral ulcers. Cutaneous squamous/basal cell carcinomas have also often been reported following long-term administration of HU. HU-induced carcinogenesis is due to both the mutagenic potential of this agent and to

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma is a rare malignant tumor originating from follicular dendritic cells. We present the first report of such a sarcoma of the palatine tonsils that developed as a radiation-induced sarcoma. A 78-year-old man, who had undergone chemoradiotherapy for hypopharyngeal and esophageal cancer 7 years prior, presented with discomfort during swallowing. Endoscopic pharyngeal examination revealed a tumor in the right palatine tonsil which was histopathologically diagnosed as a follicular dendritic cell sarcoma. The tumor also met the diagnostic criteria for radiation-induc

Cutaneous radiation-induced fibrosis (RIF) is characterized by a skin retraction or atrophy, toughness to the palpation and often entails functional limitation. Its clinical evaluation remains poorly quantified. The aim of this study was to propose an analytical method to quantify RIF skin surface with the replica technique. In this preliminary study, we report the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the cutaneous microrelief in 44 healthy controls and in four patients presenting a superficial RIF, 3 to 20 years after radiotherapy for cancer. The microrelief of these RIF presented an ab

PURPOSE: An assay for radiosensitivity has numerous applications in the clinic. Avoidance of acute responses, prediction of normal tissue toxicity, and individualization of patient radiotherapy are included among these. We have developed a rapid assay (about 24 h) able to predict intrinsic radiosensitivity of CD4 and CD8 T-lymphocytes based on radiation-induced apoptosis.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Fresh blood samples (1-2 ml in heparinized tubes) were irradiated with 0-, 2-, and 8-Gy X rays at a dose rate of approximately 3 Gy/min. Following irradiation, the cells were collected and prepared for

PURPOSE: Hypothalamic-pituitary axis is susceptible to radiotherapy, causing endocrine disorders to childhood cancer survivors. We conducted a systematic review in order to assess the radiation-induced toxicity that leads to hormone secretion abnormalities and their severity in children with brain tumors.
METHODS: The data were collected by relevant studies on PubMed and EMBASE. Articles up to December 2016 were included. We selected studies which focused on children patients (<18 yr old) with brain tumors treated with radiotherapy and the consequences for their endocrine system.
RESULTS: Gr

Acquired white matter abnormalities in children may be due to a broad spectrum of disorders, with the most significant related to metabolic and toxic etiologies. Recognition of the imaging appearance of neonatal hypoglycemia, nonketotic hyperglycemia, hyperammonemia, hepatic encephalopathy, and central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) is essential because prompt correction of the underlying metabolic abnormality may limit and, in some cases, reverse the cerebral damage. Toxic leukoencephalopathies encompass disorders caused by iatrogenic administration of pharmacologic agents and radiation therapy,

The life span of rabbit lymphocytes carrying radiation-induced chromosome aberrations has been studied by following the decline in aberration frequency as a function of the time after irradiation. Female rabbits were given a whole body X-ray dose of 300 rad. The day before exposure and at 2 hours, 14, 28, 42, 56, 84, 140, 250 and 500 days thereafter, blood samples were taken from a marginal ear vein of each animal. A plot of log abnormalities against time suggests an exponential decline for dicentrics and fragments up to 140 days, the half time for dicentrics and fragments being 70 and 46 days

In humans, radiation induces dilation of capillaries and inflammatory reactions to raise skin temperature. Thermography is used to detect abnormalities after radiation therapy (RT). However, in veterinary nursing, objective evaluation of the condition of dogs after RT using thermography has not been reported. We investigated the nasal irradiation temperature, behavioral changes, and post-irradiation pain scores in a dog receiving RT for intranasal tumors. The temperature of the nasal planum gradually increased after irradiation, reaching a significantly higher value at 120-240 min. The highest

This review summarizes the results of experiments conducted in the Institute for Environmental Sciences for the past 21 years, focusing on the biological effects of long-term low dose-rate radiation exposure on mice. Mice were chronically exposed to gamma rays at dose-rates of 0.05, 1 or 20 mGy/day for 400 days to total doses of 20, 400 or 8000 mGy, respectively. The dose rate 0.05 mGy/day is comparable to the dose limit for radiation workers. The parameters examined were lifespan, neoplasm incidence, antineoplasm immunity, body weight, chromosome aberration(s), gene mutation(s), alterations i

Background This study was performed to characterize the metabolic, functional, and structural cardiac changes in a canine model of radiation-induced heart disease by serial in vivo imaging and ex vivo analyses. Methods and Results Thirty-six dogs were randomly assigned to control or irradiated groups at 3 time points (months 3, 6, and 12 after radiation; each group comprised 6 dogs). The left anterior myocardium of dogs in irradiated groups was irradiated locally with a single dose of 20-Gy X-ray. The irradiated myocardial regions showed increased myocardial uptake of 18F-FDG (18F-fludeoxygluc

The addition of methotrexate to a previously described regimen of cyclophosphamide, Adriamycin (doxorubicin), and high-dose vincristine (VAC) was tested in 50 evaluable patients with small cell bronchogenic carcinoma. Prophylactic whole brain radiation therapy was given during the first chemotherapy course and consolidation radiation therapy was given to the mediastinum and primary site after achieving partial or complete remission. The addition of methotrexate did not improve the incidence of complete remission as compared to a previous regimen without it. The addition of radiation therapy im

The cornea is frequently exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and absorbs a portion of this radiation. UVB in particular is absorbed by the cornea and will principally damage the topmost layer of the cornea, the epithelium. Epidemiological research shows that the UV damage of DNA is a contributing factor to corneal diseases such as pterygium. There are two main DNA photolesions of UV: cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) and pyrimidine-pyrimidone (6-4) photoproducts (6-4PPs). Both involve the abnormal linking of adjacent pyrimide bases. In particular, CPD lesions, which account for the vast m

Understanding the extent to which childhood leukaemia and non-Hodgkin lymphomas are heritable is important to the survivors of these diseases, their families and clinicians who provide genetic counselling. Such understanding is also relevant to the possibility raised by Gardner et al. (1990, Br. Med. J., 300, 423-429) that paternal preconception irradiation may be an aetiological factor in these diseases. No malignant neoplasm was diagnosed among 382 offspring of survivors of childhood leukaemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma followed up for a median period of 5.8 years, the largest available cohort

The intermediate filament protein keratin 17 (Krt17) shows highly dynamic and inducible expression in skin physiology and pathology. Because Krt17 exerts physiologically important functions beyond providing structural stability to keratinocytes whereas abnormal Krt17 expression is a key feature of dermatoses such as psoriasis and pachyonychia congenita, the currently unclear regulation of Krt17 expression needs to be better understood. Using a rat model of radiation dermatitis, we report here that Krt17 expression initially is down-regulated but later is strongly up-regulated by ionizing radia

The results of a longterm study on 55 children are presented whose parents were treated by radiotherapy. Five or ten years after a first examination, these children were submitted to a check-up investigation of their physical and intellectual development. The group of twenty irradiated fathers received an average dose to the gonads of 0.55 Gy (0.01 to 6.4 Gy), the group of twenty irradiated mothers 0.72 Gy (0.01 to 8.0 Gy). In all parents the most frequent finding was Hodgkin's disease, which was diagnosed as a neoplasm in 23 cases. Chemotherapy was applied in two out of 40 patients. The proof

Skin photoaging is a multifaceted dermatological disorder induced by extrinsic influences (mainly excessive/prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and intrinsic factors (e.g. oxidative stress), involving progressive disruption of epidermal homeostasis and dermal extracellular matrix (ECM) integrity. This study aimed to systematically evaluate the protective effects of polysaccharides from Sargassum fusiforme (DSFP-45) against UV-induced epidermal and dermal photoaging using UVB-irradiated HaCaT cells and UVA-irradiated HSF cells at concentrations of 125-500 μg/mL, and UVA + UVB-irrad

Abnormalities in the extracellular matrix (ECM) caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation are mediated by epigenetic mechanisms. Enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) is a histone methyltransferase that is implicated in inflammation, immune regulation, and senescence. However, its role in controlling UV-induced ECM alterations in the skin remains elusive. Here, we investigated the role of EZH2 in UV-induced expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 and type I procollagen. We found that UV induced EZH2 expression in human skin in vivo and in human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs). EZH2 knockdown reduced
