Accountability for care through undoing racism and equity for moms: a study protocol for a cluster randomized trial of data accountability and community-based doula interventions in prenatal practices.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: In the United States, Non-Hispanic Black (Black) people are 2-threefold more likely than Non-Hispanic White (White) people to have pregnancy complications, such as a baby with low birthweight. Multi-level, community-based interventions aimed at mitigating the impacts of interpersonal and structural racism may decrease bias, improve the quality of care, and improve pregnancy outcomes. The Accountability for Cancer Care through Undoing Racism and Equity and the Heart Health Now studies reduced disparities in cancer treatment and cardiovascular risk, respectively. The Accountab

Estimating COVID-19 cumulative incidence from seroprevalence surveys accounting for time-varying seroreversion: A fully Bayesian methodology.

Seroprevalence surveys reveal the extent of humoral immunity against pathogens such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and under some circumstances represent cumulative incidence of prior infection. However, antibody waning - or seroreversion - biases these estimates by reducing assay sensitivity in a time-varying manner. Because assay sensitivity decays over time, naively using serosurveys can substantially bias estimates of SARS-CoV-2 cumulative incidence and fatality rates. The Bayesian assay-specific, time-varying sensitivity adjustment developed in this paper

Exploring perceived AI substitution in future accounting frameworks: the role of psychological trust, anxiety, and cognitive adaptability.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly transforming accounting systems through automation, predictive analytics, intelligent auditing, and financial decision-support systems. While scholarly and professional debates frequently address whether AI may substitute human accountants, empirical evidence examining actual substitution remains limited. Existing studies have primarily focused on technological efficiency and adoption intentions, with insufficient attention given to the psychological factors shaping professionals' perceptions of AI's substitutive potential. This study therefore inve…

Drivers and Performance Outcomes of Social Responsibility Accounting: An Integrated Model for SMEs in the Mekong Delta.

BACKGROUND: While the strategic importance of Social Responsibility Accounting (SRA) is well-established for large corporations, its antecedents and firm-level outcomes in the context of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in emerging economies remain critically under-explored. This study develops and empirically tests an integrated theoretical model examining the key drivers of SRA implementation and its subsequent impact on firm performance and access to finance among SMEs in Vietnam. METHODS: Employing a sequential exploratory mixed-method design, qualitative interviews with nine exp…

Accounting for long-term survival: a smoothed piecewise model for event time projection in cellular immunotherapy trials.

In clinical trials with time-to-event outcomes, one of the main tasks is predicting the number of events over time and the time to reach a specific number of events. This is particularly challenging in cellular immunotherapy trials due to the unique, time-dependent nature of the hazard rate. The typical survival pattern shows a high early event rate followed by a long-term survival plateau. While piecewise parametric survival models are commonly used to address this hazard heterogeneity, they often introduce abrupt changes in hazard rates between intervals. In this work, we extend it to a smoo

Real-world Associations Between GLP-1 Receptor Agonist Use and Diabetic Retinopathy Accounting for Longitudinal Glycemic Control.

PURPOSE: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) have been identified as a potential risk factor for diabetic retinopathy onset and progression, although there is conflicting evidence. This longitudinal, retrospective cohort study determined associations between GLP-1 RA use and diabetic retinopathy (DR), diabetic macular edema (DME), and treatment-requiring DR/DME. METHODS: Participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus were followed for 10 years from initial diagnosis. Survival analyses and Cox proportional hazards models adjusted for age, race and ethnicity, sex at birth, income,

Glucosylceramide Synthase, a Key Enzyme in Sphingolipid Metabolism, Regulates Expression of Genes Accounting for Cancer Drug Resistance.

Emergent cancer drug resistance and further metastasis can mainly be attributed to altered expression levels and functional activities of multiple genes of cancer cells under chemotherapy. In response to challenge with anticancer drugs, enhanced ceramide glycosylation catalyzed by glucosylceramide synthase (GCS) confers drug resistance and enrichment with cancer stem cells. p53 mutations, which gain function in tumor progression, are prevalently extant in ovarian cancers. Via integrated gene expression assessments, we characterized GCS-responsive genes in ovarian cancer cells treated with dact

Improving patient understanding of prenatal screening tests: Using naturally sampled frequencies, pictures, and accounting for individual differences.

OBJECTIVE: Health professionals must communicate prenatal screening test results effectively to patients, but these tests involve very low prevalence and high false positive risks; a situation known to be difficult for people to understand. METHODS: The present experiments evaluated the effectiveness of presenting prenatal screening test results for Trisomy 21, Trisomy 13, or DiGeorge Syndrome, using either naturally sampled frequencies or standard percentages. Participants were given a task of interpreting the posterior probability of an embryo having the condition. RESULTS: People were sig

Accounting for age in prediction of discharge destination following elective lumbar fusion: a supervised machine learning approach.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: The number of elective spinal fusion procedures performed each year continues to grow, making risk factors for post-operative complications following this procedure increasingly clinically relevant. Nonhome discharge (NHD) is of particular interest due to its associations with increased costs of care and rates of complications. Notably, increased age has been found to influence rates of NHD. PURPOSE: To identify aged-adjusted risk factors for nonhome discharge following elective lumbar fusion through the utilization of Machine Learning-generated predictions within stratifi
