[Evoked auditory potentials in neonatal hyperbilirubinemia].

Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (greater than 20 mg%) is an audiological risk factor. In order to check early detection of bilirubin-induced neu … bsolute and interpeak latencies of waves I and V were measured and correlated to bilirubinemia upon acoustic stimulation and maximal bilirubinemia observed during neonatal observation. Significant correlations were noted between bilirubinemia and V or V-I latencies. No significant correlation was observed between bilirubinemia and wave I latencies. Similar results wer …

Normative characteristics of ipsilateral acoustic reflex adaptation.

Contralateral and ipsilateral acoustic reflex adaptation (decay) were examined using 500-, 1000-, and 2000-Hz tonal activators for stimulation periods of 30 seconds in 30 normal subjects. For these normal subjects, ipsilateral adaptation always exceeded contralateral adaptation, although differences between the two conditions were not significant. In addition, contralateral and ipsilateral acoustic reflex adaptation of four subjects with varying degrees of sensorineural hearing loss were compared to the normative data. Results for these impaired ears indicated that a longer period of activatio

Effects of Voice Therapy on Laryngeal Motor Units During Phonation in Chronic Superior Laryngeal Nerve Paresis Dysphonia.

OBJECTIVES: Injury to the superior laryngeal nerve can result in dysphonia, and in particular, loss of vocal range. It can be an especially difficult problem to address with either voice therapy or surgical intervention. Some clinicians and scientists suggest that combining vocal exercises with adjunctive neuromuscular electrical stimulation may enhance the positive effects of voice therapy for superior laryngeal nerve paresis (SLNP). However, the effects of voice therapy without neuromuscular electrical stimulation are unknown. The purpose of this retrospective study was to demonstrate the cl

F-waves of the facial muscles in healthy control subjects and in patients with peripheral facial nerve disturbance.

F-waves were recorded from the mentalis muscles with surface electrodes following stimulation of the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve in healthy control subjects during wakefulness, non-REM (rapid eye movement) sleep and voluntary contraction and in patients with Bell's palsy and acoustic neurinoma. The F-wave of the facial muscles results from the backfiring of antidromically activated alpha motoneurons in the facial motonucleus. Therefore, first, the F-waves were not easily elicited in patients with any disturbance in the proximal segment of the facial nerve (Bell's palsy and a

An improved method of obtaining electrocochleography recordings from Nucleus Hybrid cochlear implant users.

Interest in electrocochleography (ECoG) has recently resurged as a potential tool to assess peripheral auditory function in cochlear implant (CI) users. ECoG recordings can be evoked using acoustic stimulation and recorded from an extra- or intra-cochlear electrode in CI users. Recordings reflect contributions from cochlear hair cells and the auditory nerve. We recently demonstrated the feasibility of using Custom Sound EP (clinically available software) to record ECoG responses in Nucleus Hybrid CI users with preserved acoustic hearing in the implanted ear (Abbas et al, 2017). While successfu…

Changes induced by levodopa and subthalamic nucleus stimulation on parkinsonian speech.

Levodopa (L-dopa) and subthalamic nucleus (STN) stimulation treatments have been associated with both improvement and exacerbation of dysarthria in Parkinson's disease (PD). We report four cases illustrating variant responses of dysarthria to dopaminergic and STN stimulation therapies. Patients' motor disability and dysarthria were perceptually rated by the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) in four conditions according to medication and STN stimulation. Dedicated software packages allowed acquisition and analysis of acoustic recordings. Case 1, who had a severe off period aphoni

[Experimental studies on the suppression of the stapedius reflex in comparison with EMG-results in idiopathic facial paresis].

The recording of intra-aural muscle reflexes elicited by acoustic stimulation is a routine method in clinical audiology. The most important quantitative examinations of the reflex dynamic, i.e. Metz recruitment and reflex decay in low frequencies, allow the judgement of function of the afferent pathway in the stimulated inner ear and acoustic nerve. Quantitative determinations of the efferent branch were carried out by several authors in a few normal subjects and in several patients with multiple sclerosis or facial palsy. Absolute acoustic impedance - a method yielding wide scattering - was u…

Neural signatures of auditory hypersensitivity following acoustic trauma.

Neurons in sensory cortex exhibit a remarkable capacity to maintain stable firing rates despite large fluctuations in afferent activity levels. However, sudden peripheral deafferentation in adulthood can trigger an excessive, non-homeostatic cortical compensatory response that may underlie perceptual disorders including sensory hypersensitivity, phantom limb pain, and tinnitus. Here, we show that mice with noise-induced damage of the high-frequency cochlear base were behaviorally hypersensitive to spared mid-frequency tones and to direct optogenetic stimulation of auditory thalamocortical neur

Spontaneous firing patterns in the medial geniculate nucleus in a guinea pig model of tinnitus.

The mechanism of tinnitus, the perception of sound in the absence of acoustic stimulation, remains as yet unknown. It has been proposed that tinnitus is caused by altered spontaneous activity in the auditory pathway following cochlear damage in combination with inadequate gating at the level of the auditory thalamus, the medial geniculate nucleus (MGN). To investigate this further we made electrophysiological recordings in MGN of guinea pigs (n = 9) with and without tinnitus after acoustic trauma (continuous loud tone at 10 kHz, 124 dB SPL for 2 h). Parameters of interest were spontaneous toni…

Brain stem potentials evoked by electrical stimulation of the cochlea in human subjects.

Brain stem potentials were recorded from scalp electrode to biphasic square wave electrical stimulation of implanted electrodes in the cochlea of three patients. Reliable potentials could be recorded that appeared 1.5 to 2.0 msec prior to the customary acoustically-evoked brain stem potentials. The effects of variations in electrical stimulus parameters of rate and intensity were measured. Brain stem potentials can provide objective indices of the effectiveness of electrical stimulation of the cochlea in man.

Blockade of cochlear NMDA receptors prevents long-term tinnitus during a brief consolidation window after acoustic trauma.

Tinnitus, the perception of sound in the absence of external acoustic stimulation, is a common and devastating pathology. It is often a consequence of acoustic trauma or drug toxicity. The neuronal mechanisms of tinnitus are neither yet fully understood nor are effective treatments available. Using a novel behavioral paradigm for measuring tinnitus in the rat based on tone-guided navigation, we show here that the development of long-term noise-induced tinnitus, the most prevalent and clinically important form of human tinnitus, can be abated by local administration of the NMDA antagonist "ifen…

Replication of a skills assessment for auditory-visual conditional discrimination training.

Auditory-visual conditional discrimination training (e.g., receptive identification training, listener responses; AVCD) is ubiquitous in early intervention and special education programs. Nevertheless, some learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) do not appear to benefit from this training despite use of empirically validated treatments. To prevent exposure to extended training that does not lead to learning, a skills assessment that measures skills related to AVCD training will be useful for educators and practitioners. The current study replicated the skills assessment developed and eva

Somatosensory contribution to audio-visual speech processing.

Recent studies have demonstrated that the auditory speech perception of a listener can be modulated by somatosensory input applied to the facial skin suggesting that perception is an embodied process. However, speech perception is a multisensory process involving both the auditory and visual modalities. It is unknown whether and to what extent somatosensory stimulation to the facial skin modulates audio-visual speech perception. If speech perception is an embodied process, then somatosensory stimulation applied to the perceiver should influence audio-visual speech processing. Using the McGurk

Verbal task demands are key in explaining the relationship between paired-associate learning and reading ability.

Paired-associate learning (PAL) tasks measure the ability to form a novel association between a stimulus and a response. Performance on such tasks is strongly associated with reading ability, and there is increasing evidence that verbal task demands may be critical in explaining this relationship. The current study investigated the relationships between different forms of PAL and reading ability. A total of 97 children aged 8-10 years completed a battery of reading assessments and six different PAL tasks (phoneme-phoneme, visual-phoneme, nonverbal-nonverbal, visual-nonverbal, nonword-nonword,

Transient evoked otoacoustic emissions recorder using maximum length sequences as a function of stimulus rate and level.

OBJECTIVE: The recently developed technique of recording transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) using clicks presented according to maximum length sequences (MLSs) enables very high stimulation rates to be used. The aim of this study was to provide normative data on the relationship between TEOAEs recorded conventionally (at 40 clicks/sec) and those recorded using the MLS technique (at 11 maximum rates between 100 and 5000 clicks/sec) to establish a baseline for future clinical studies. DESIGN: TEOAEs were recorded at 12 rates from 12 normally hearing adult ears at click levels decre

Reduction of acoustically induced auditory impairment by inhalation of carbogen gas. II. Temporary pure-tone induced depression of cochlear action potentials.

Guinea pigs were exposed to a 4.5 kHz pure-tone at 104 dB for 10 min during artificial ventilation with either carbogen gas (95% O2/5% CO2) or normal air. Mean N1 response amplitudes to tone bursts at 32 test frequencies extending from 2.1 kHz through 30 kHz were measured at standardized intervals before and after the acoustic overstimulation. All animals received normal air during recovery. Significant reduction of N1 response amplitude depression within a 3/8 to 1 octave frequency domain above the exposure frequency was found in the group which received the carbogen gas. Those frequencies fo

Acoustic startle and prepulse inhibition deficits in adult monkeys with neonatal lesions of the hippocampus, amygdala and orbital frontal cortex.

Sensory-motor gating, the process of filtering sensory stimuli to modulate motor responses, is impaired in many psychiatric diseases but especially schizophrenia. Sensory-motor gating assessed with the prepulse inhibition paradigm (PPI) measures startle in response to preceding acoustic stimuli. PPI studies in rodents have consistently found that neonatal hippocampal lesions impair sensory-motor gating in adult animals, but its applicability to primates has yet to be tested. The study examined acoustic startle responses and PPI in adult rhesus monkeys with neonatal lesions of the hippocampus (

Acoustic deprivation modulates central gain in human auditory brainstem and cortex.

Beyond reduced audibility, there is convincing evidence that the auditory system adapts according to the principles of homeostatic plasticity in response to a hearing loss. Such compensatory changes include modulation of central auditory gain mechanisms. Earplugging is a common experimental method that has been used to introduce a temporary, reversible hearing loss that induces changes consistent with central gain modulation. In the present study, young, normal-hearing adult participants wore a unilateral earplug for two weeks, during which we measured changes in the acoustic reflex threshold

Investigation of the neural discrimination of acoustic characteristics of speech sounds in normal-hearing individuals through Frequency-following Response (FFR).

PURPOSE: To evaluate how the auditory pathways encode and discriminate the plosive syllables [ga], [da] and [ba] using the auditory evoked Frequency-following Response (FFR) in children with typical development. METHODS: Twenty children aged 6-12 years were evaluated using the FFR for the [ga], [da] and [ba] stimuli. The stimuli were composed of six formants and were differentiated in the F2 to F3 transition (transient portion). The other formants were identical in the three syllables (sustained portion). The latencies of the 16 waves of the transient portion (<70ms) and of the 21 waves of th

Effect of Middle-Ear Pathology on High-Frequency Ear Canal Reflectance Measurements in the Frequency and Time Domains.

The effects of middle-ear pathology on wideband acoustic immittance and reflectance at frequencies above 6-8 kHz have not been documented, nor has the effect of such pathologies on the time-domain reflectance. We describe an approach that utilizes sound frequencies as high as 20 kHz and quantifies reflectance in both the frequency and time domains. Experiments were performed with fresh normal human temporal bones before and after simulating various middle-ear pathologies, including malleus fixation, stapes fixation, and disarticulation. In addition to experimental data, computational modeling
