Dormancy in Cryptococcus neoformans: 60 years of accumulating evidence.

Cryptococcus neoformans is an opportunistic yeast that is present worldwide and interacts with various organisms. In humans, it is responsible for cryptococcosis, a deadly invasive fungal infection that represents around 220,000 cases per year worldwide. Starting from the natural history of the disease in humans, there is accumulating evidence on the capacity of this organism to enter dormancy. In response to the harsh host environment, the yeast is able to adapt dramatically and escape the vigilance of the host's immune cells to survive. Indeed, the yeast exposed to the host takes on pleiotro

Evolution of fossorial locomotion in the transition from tetrapod to snake-like in lizards.

Dramatic evolutionary transitions in morphology are often assumed to be adaptive in a new habitat. However, these assumptions are rarely tested because such tests require intermediate forms, which are often extinct. In vertebrates, the evolution of an elongate, limbless body is generally hypothesized to facilitate locomotion in fossorial and/or cluttered habitats. However, these hypotheses remain untested because few studies examine the locomotion of species ranging in body form from tetrapod to snake-like. Here, we address these functional hypotheses by testing whether trade-offs exist betwee

Adaptive introgression as a driver of local adaptation to climate in European white oaks.

Latitudinal and elevational gradients provide valuable experimental settings for studies of the potential impact of global warming on forest tree species. The availability of long-term phenological surveys in common garden experiments for traits associated with climate, such as bud flushing for sessile oaks (Quercus petraea), provide an ideal opportunity to investigate this impact. We sequenced 18 sessile oak populations and used available sequencing data for three other closely related European white oak species (Quercus pyrenaica, Quercus pubescens, and Quercus robur) to explore the evolutio

Analysing how plants in coastal wetlands respond to varying tidal regimes throughout their life cycles.

Important to conserve plant species in coastal wetlands throughout their life cycle. All life stages in these habitats are exposed to varying tidal cycles. It is necessary to investigate all life stages as to how they respond to varying tidal regimes. We examine three wetlands containing populations of an endangered halophyte species, each subjected to different tidal regimes: (1). wetlands completely closed to tidal cycles; (2). wetlands directly exposed to tidal cycles (3). wetlands exposed to a partially closed tidal regime. Our results showed that the most threatened stage varied between w

Characteristic adaptations of the extracellular matrix in dilated cardiomyopathy.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a relatively common heart muscle disease characterized by the dilation and thinning of the left ventricle accompanied with left ventricular systolic dysfunction. Myocardial fibrosis is a major feature in DCM and therefore it is inevitable that corresponding extracellular matrix (ECM) changes are involved in DCM onset and progression. Increasing our understanding of how ECM adaptations are involved in DCM could be important for the development of future interventions. This review article discusses the molecular adaptations in ECM composition and structure that ha

The Effect of Light Stress and Other Culture Conditions on Photoinhibition and Growth of Dunaliella tertiolecta.

This work aimed to examine the effects of high light stress as well as other culture conditions including HCO3 − concentration, temperature, salinity, and pre-acclimation on photoinhibition and growth of halotolerant alga Dunaliella tertiolecta. Significant photoinhibition of D. tertiolecta was observed during a short period of exposure (6 hours) to high intensity of lights (1000, 1500, and 2000 μmol photons m-2 s-1); however, after 2 days of continuous light exposure, the alga adapted to high light stress and reached similar growth rates as low light exposure. The increase in HCO3 − concentra

Adaptation strategies: how environmental fungi become fatal?

Most fungi contributing to systemic human infections are environmental pathogens, whose fatal pathogenicity is largely derived from their survival strategies developed to adapt to a plethora of natural stressors. A well-studied example of such pathogens is Cryptococcus neoformans. C. neoformans can cause life-threatening cryptococcosis and meningoencephalitis, which claim more than 600 000 lives annually. Recent findings reveal that the coordinated application of strategies like morphotype transition, cell-cell communication and cellular heterogeneity play critical roles in optimizing fungal s

Roles of H2S in adaptation of alpine plants Lamiophlomis rotata to altitude gradients.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an important gaseous transmitter in organisims. It widespreads in the organs and tissues of animals and participates in the biological process of cardiovascular relaxation, cell apoptosis and protection, inflammation and neuromodulation. H2S also can be synthesized in plants system and is involved in stress responses and the biological process of growth and development. This review describes the synthesis and biological function of H2S in plants. Based on our research for the adaptation of Lamiophlomis rotata to different altitude gradients, we firstly proposed H2S pl

The icmF3 locus is involved in multiple adaptation- and virulence-related characteristics in Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1.

The type VI secretion system (T6SS) is widely distributed in Gram-negative bacteria. Three separate T6SSs called H1-, H2-, and H3-T6SS have been discovered in Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1. Recent studies suggest that, in contrast to the H1-T6SS that targets prokaryotic cells, H2- and H3-T6SS are involved in interactions with both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. However, the detailed functions of T6SS components are still uncharacterized. The intracellular multiplication factor (IcmF) protein is conserved in type VI secretion systems (T6SS) of all different bacterial pathogens. Bioinformatic a

The solitary kidney--a nephrological perspective.

The solitary kidney (SK) is of special interest for practitioners because of the reduced number of nephrons as compared to persons who have 2 kidneys. It undergoes adaptive phenomena of hypertrophy and hyperfiltration that allow long-term evolution, but pathological situations might occur in the remnant kidney. In some persons with a SK, the adaptive phenomena can be associated with proteinuria, arterial hypertension (AH) and diminished Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR). In very rare situations, diminution of renal function in patients with a SK can progress to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) an

The effects of iron deficiency on lead accumulation in Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle seedlings.

Understanding the effects of root Fe deficiency on the uptake and translocation of toxic metals can be important for improving the phytoremediation strategies of polluted soils. The present study investigated how Fe nutritional status affects the uptake and root-to-shoot-translocation of Pb in hydroponically grown seedlings of (Mill.) Swingle. The interactions of Fe deficiency and Pb were assessed by measuring the root Fe(III) reductase activity, carboxylic acids concentration in root exudates, root and shoot biomass, and accumulation of Pb and other metals (Fe, Zn, Mn, and Cu) in roots and le

Isolate-specific effects of ultraviolet radiation on photosynthesis, growth and mycosporine-like amino acids in the microbial mat-forming cyanobacterium Microcoleus chthonoplastes.

Microcoleus chthonoplastes constitutes one of the dominant microorganisms in intertidal microbial mat communities. In the laboratory, the effects of repeated daily exposure to ultraviolet radiation (16:8 light:dark cycle) was investigated in unicyanobacterial cultures isolated from three different localities (Baltic Sea = WW6; North Sea = STO and Brittany = BRE). Photosynthesis and growth were measured in time series (12-15 days) while UV-absorbing mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) and cellular integrity were determined after 12 and 3 days exposure to three radiation treatments [PAR (22 mumo

[Morphological adaptations of acariform mites (Acari: Acariformes) to permanent parasitism on mammals].

The external morphological adaptations to parasitism in acariform mites (Acari: Acariformes), permanently parasiting mammals, are briefly summated and analyzed. According to several external morphological criteria (structures of gnathosoma, idiosoma, setation, legs and life cycle), the following six morphoecotypes were established: skin mites (i)-- Cheyletidae, Chirorhynchobiidae, Lobalgidae, Myobiidae, Myocoptidae (the most part), Rhyncoptidae, Psoroptidae; fur mites (ii)--Atopomelidae, Clirodiscidae, Listrophoridae, Myocoptidae (Trichoecius only); skin burrowing mites (iii)--Sarcoptidae; int

The diving paradox: new insights into the role of the dive response in air-breathing vertebrates.

When aquatic reptiles, birds and mammals submerge, they typically exhibit a dive response in which breathing ceases, heart rate slows, and blood flow to peripheral tissues is reduced. The profound dive response that occurs during forced submergence sequesters blood oxygen for the brain and heart while allowing peripheral tissues to become anaerobic, thus protecting the animal from immediate asphyxiation. However, the decrease in peripheral blood flow is in direct conflict with the exercise response necessary for supporting muscle metabolism during submerged swimming. In free diving animals, a

[The assessment of adaptation potential of circulatory system in non-coronarogenic myocardial disease].

Adaptive potential of the circulatory system was estimated in 223 patients with non-coronary myocardial lesions (80 patients had spinal osteochondrosis with cardialgia, 78 patients were obese and 65 patients had neurocirculatory asthenia of the cardial type) in tests with submaximal exercise. 21 healthy subjects served control. It was found that submaximal exercise in rehabilitation does not change the adaptive potential in healthy subjects, lowers this potential in patients with neurocirculatory asthenia and raises in obese patients.

Photoperiodism in higher vertebrates: an adaptive strategy in temporal environment.

Life on earth is subjected to strict regimen of cyclical changes. Of all geophysical changes, the most prominent are the daily changes between day and night and the regular succession of annual seasons. Synchronization to environmental day-night and seasonal cycles is key to survival. Night-time and day-time environments differ in illumination, temperature, food supplies and predators. Organisms have, therefore, developed highly specialized temporal programmes to get better adapted to activity either during night or during the day. Many species use annual cycle of changes in daylength as "cale

Functional consequences of sustained sleep deprivation in the rat.

Sleep deprivation disrupts vital biological processes that are necessary for cognitive ability and physical health, but the physiological changes that underlie these outward effects are largely unknown. The purpose of the present studies in the laboratory rat is to prolong sleep deprivation to delineate the pathophysiology and to determine its mediation. In the rat, the course of prolonged sleep deprivation has a syndromic nature and eventuates in a life-threatening state. An early and central symptom of sleep deprivation is a progressive increase in peripheral energy expenditure to nearly dou

[Role of hemoglobin in adaptation to hypoxia in patients with iron-deficiency anemia].

To define Hb role in compensation of hemic hypoxia, the authors studied HbO2 dissociation curves (HDC), blood acid-base equilibrium, concentrations of 2,3-DPG and creatinine in red cells from females with moderate iron-deficiency anemia resultant from frequent haemorrhages. This form of anemia was found associated with a 34% increase in the level of 2,3-DPG against normal amounts of other two ligands essential to Hb affinity to oxygen, i.e. H+ ions and CO2. A 3-fold increase in creatinine concentrations and its direct relationship with 2,3-DPG quantitative characteristics gave ground for consi
