Psychological features in male and female adolescents with eating disorders: is it the same condition?

PURPOSE: Eating disorders (EDs) are psychiatric disorders with a typical prevalence in adolescence. EDs have long been wrongly considered female gender-bound disorders, resulting in a systematic underrepresentation of males in EDs research. The main goal of the present study is exploring the clinical and psychological characteristics of adolescent males with EDs in comparison with females. METHODS: In this observational and retrospective study, 14 males and 28 females hospitalized for eating disorders during the adolescent age (from 12 to 17.11 years) were recruited. Main clinical data (age,

Polyarteritis nodosa: a case presenting with renal mass.

An adolescent girl was hospitalized due to fever and abdominal flank pain. A left renal haematoma was detected on magnetic resonance imaging. Renal angiography demonstrated multiple microaneurysms at both hepatic arteries, intrarenal segments of the bilateral renal arteries, and inferior lobar segment of the left pulmonary artery, which is consistent with the diagnosis of polyarteritis nodosa. Vasculitic syndromes should be considered in patients with visceral haemorrhage.

Adolescents and Their Parents: Perceptions of Addressing Obesity in the Inpatient Setting.

OBJECTIVES: Extending obesity screening to the inpatient setting may increase adolescent and parent awareness of weight status. Whether this should be a priority given limited resources depends on how interventions would be received by adolescents and their parents. In this study, we aimed to further understand the perception of adolescents and their parents to addressing obesity in the inpatient setting to inform how to better address this issue. METHODS: Pairs of hospitalized adolescents 13 to 18 years old on a general service and their parents were surveyed. The adolescent and parent surve

Treatment of an identity-diffused adolescent on an acute inpatient unit.

The case of an adolescent hospitalized on an Acute Inpatient Unit following a suicide attempt is presented. Aspects of the patient's clinical presentation, specifically highly variable behaviors that eventuated in three recurring personality constellations, are linked to the youth's history of physical abuse. Interpretations of the boy's behaviors and treatment strategies are illustrated for consideration in work with other youth suffering histories of abuse.

Implementation of spirometry screening for post-tuberculosis lung disease (PTLD) among adolescents and adults enrolled within the National Tuberculosis Control Program of Carmelo Hospital in Chókwè District, Mozambique: A hybrid type III effectiveness-implementation study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Despite receiving adequate treatment, many tuberculosis (TB) survivors are left with post-tuberculosis complications, possibly due to lung tissue damage incurred during the active period of the disease. Current TB programs worldwide deliver quality care throughout the course of active TB treatment, yet often fail to provide organized follow-up once treatment ends. Post-tuberculosis lung disease (PTLD) is a prominent, yet underrecognized cause of chronic lung disease, managed similarly to chronic respiratory diseases with pharmacotherapy and/or personalized pulmonary rehabilitation

How Should Compassion Be Expressed as a Primary Clinical and Ethical Value in Anorexia Nervosa Intervention?

Use of force in the care of patients with severe anorexia nervosa is controversial but can be justified when the disorder becomes life-threatening. This commentary examines the role of force in compassionate care of an adolescent patient hospitalized with extreme anorexia nervosa and suggests strategies for reaching consensus, minimizing harm, and maximizing the chance of a therapeutic outcome when forced intervention is a compassionate thing to do.

Influencing factors of non-suicidal self-injury according to DSM-5 in adolescents admitted to the psychiatric department: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is being increasingly recognized as a prominent mental health concern, especially among adolescents. In psychiatric clinical samples, its incidence is high and difficult to identify. However, few studies have explored the NSSI behavior of psychiatric hospitalized adolescents. This study aimed to explore the influencing factors of NSSI according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5) in adolescents admitted to the psychiatric department. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, by convenient sampling, a total

Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) Patterns in Adolescents from a Romanian Child Psychiatry Inpatient Clinic.

Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) involves deliberately causing harm to one's body without the intention of suicide. As the numbers of adolescents presenting NSSI have been steadily increasing during the last years, we intended to investigate adolescent patients exhibiting NSSI, admitted to our clinic-a Romanian child psychiatry inpatient clinic, over the course of five years. A total of 100 adolescents (80 females, 20 males, mean age: 14.9 years) hospitalized for various neuropsychiatric disorders and engaging in self-harm were studied. The self-harm methods most frequently used in our sample w

Fatal delayed transfusion reaction in a sickle cell anemia patient with Serratia marcescens sepsis.

Patients with sickle cell anemia may require repeated red cell transfusion, putting them at risk for minor blood group alloimmunization and the development of delayed hemolytic transfusion reactions. Although Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common cause of life-threatening infection in patients with sickle cell anemia, those who have been recently hospitalized are at risk for infection with resistant hospital-associated organisms, and blood transfusion may put the patient at risk of infection with transfusion-associated organisms such as Serratia marcescens and Yersinic enterocolitica. Acute petrified myocardium associated with meningococcal sepsis in childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematous: a fatal case.

Acute petrified myocardium associated with septic shock, diagnosed by autopsy has rarely been described. A 15-year-old adolescent male was diagnosed with childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus. One year later, he was hospitalized with fever, myalgia, headache, arthritis, vomiting, dyspnea and was diagnosed with sepsis secondary to bronchopneumonia and meningitis. Blood culture identified Neisseria meningitidis serogroup Y. Despite antibiotics and intensive therapeutic measures, he died after 29 days of hospitalization. The autopsy revealed necrotic cardiomyocytes with dystrophic calcific

Pituitary non-secreting macroadenoma apoplexy in an adolescent. patient report and review of the literature.

Pituitary macroadenomas are rare in children and adolescents, and when encountered are usually hormone secreting. Symptomatic pituitary non-secreting macroadenoma apoplexy in an adolescent is rare and potentially life-threatening. A 15 year-old patient is described, hospitalized due to headache, fever and photophobia 4 days prior to admission. A meningeal syndrome was postulated, based on clinical examination and cerebrospinal fluid testing. However, clinical examination and hormone testing revealed partial failure of the anterior pituitary. Computed tomography of the brain demonstrated a spac

Upadacitinib as salvage therapy in adolescents with acute severe ulcerative colitis refractory to conventional treatments.

OBJECTIVES: Upadacitinib (UPA), a selective Janus kinase-1 inhibitor, has demonstrated efficacy in inducing and maintaining remission in moderate to severe ulcerative colitis (UC) in adults. Current standard management for acute severe ulcerative colitis (ASUC) involves intravenous corticosteroids (IVCS) followed by infliximab (IFX) salvage therapy. Limited data exist on the utility of UPA in ASUC, particularly in adolescents. This case series reports the use of UPA as salvage therapy in hospitalized adolescents experiencing ASUC refractory to IFX. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart

[Severe aortic stenosis and familial hypercholesterolemia].

Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HFH) is a rare and life-threatening disease that can manifest as coronary artery disease or severe aortic stenosis before twenties. We present the case of a male adolescent who was hospitalized with a clinical diagnosis of HFH and severe aortic stenosis. He underwent aortic valve replacement with mechanical prosthesis and aortic annulus enlargement, and two aortocoronary bypasses were implanted due to an intraoperative complication. The patient evolved favourably and was discharged with combination therapy with high-intensity statins and ezetimibe.
