Knowledge Representation of a Multicenter Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Infrastructure: Development of the STRONG AYA Knowledge Graph.

PURPOSE: Rare diseases are difficult to fully capture, and regularly call for large, geographically dispersed initiatives. Such initiatives are often met with data harmonization challenges. These challenges render data incompatible and impede successful realization. The STRONG AYA project is such an initiative, specifically focusing on adolescent and young adult (AYAs) with cancer. STRONG AYA is setting up a federated data infrastructure containing data of varying format. Here, we elaborate on how we used health care-agnostic semantic web technologies to overcome such challenges. METHODS: We

Prenatal PFHxS exposure alters ovarian development in female adolescent mice: Transcriptomic, hormonal, and structural evidence of disrupted steroidogenesis.

Perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), a persistent organic pollutant and developmental toxicant, poses significant health concerns. However, the long-term impacts of human-relevant prenatal PFHxS exposure on female reproductive development remain unclear. This study investigated its effects on ovarian development and estrous cyclicity outcomes in female adolescent using a mouse model. Pregnant mice were exposed to human relevant doses of PFHxS via oral gavage throughout gestation. Our findings showed that prenatal PFHxS exposure significantly delayed vaginal opening (VO) and disrupted estrous cyc

Adolescent development of decision making processes in n-back task performance and links to pubertal timing and tempo.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is associated with substantial improvements in cognitive performance, with faster and more accurate decisions, yet the underlying mechanisms and the role of pubertal maturation remain unclear. Pubertal maturation can be characterized by timing, capturing whether an individual reaches pubertal milestones before or after peers, and tempo, capturing how fast one progresses through puberty relative to peers. We applied computational modeling to examine developmental changes in decision making and working memory and tested whether pubertal timing and tempo explain variance b

Friends, family, and community influences on adolescent development: A review of impactful findings from the ABCD study®.

The Adolescent Brain Cognitive DevelopmentSM (ABCD) Study was funded to investigate adolescent development across 10 + years, assessing multilevel social contexts of influence and adolescent health outcomes. As such, the ABCD study has generated a large body of literature investigating adolescent health outcomes in neurocognition, mental health, physical health and substance use. However, the extent to which family, peer, and community contexts are measured and integrated across these outcomes has not been systematically examined. We synthesized 64 articles, deemed to be of high impact using a…

Development and evaluation of a personalised sleep care plan on child and adolescent in-patient mental health wards.

AIMS AND METHOD: The study evaluated a package of measures to improve sleep on psychiatric wards admitting patients from children and young people's services (CYPS). Sleep disturbance has significant impact on adolescent mental health, and in-patient wards can directly cause sleep disturbance, independent of the problem that led to admission. We developed a CYPS-specific package (TeenSleepWell) that promoted a better sleep environment, enhanced staff education about sleep, screened for sleep disorders, and raised awareness of benefits and side-effects of hypnotics. This included personalised s

Associations between pain experiences and gray matter volume in youth in the adolescent brain cognitive development (ABCD) study.

Pain in youth is a growing public health concern. While research suggests pervasive differences in brain morphology with pain in adulthood, this relationship is less studied in adolescence. To address this gap, the present study explored pain-related associations with gray matter volume across 82 brain regions in a community sample of 7712 youth (mean age = 11.96) by comparing structural brain measures between those with (n = 2668; 34.6%) and without (n = 5044; 65.4%) past-month pain and examining associations with a continuous latent pain factor composed of average pain ratings, worst pain ra

Fat-free mass predictive equation using bioelectrical impedance and maturity offset in adolescent athletes: Development and cross-validation.

OBJECTIVES: This is a cross-sectional study, aimed to develop and cross-validate a fat-free mass (FFM) predictive equation using single-frequency bioelectrical impedance (BIA), considering the predicted age at peak height velocity (PHV) as a variable. Additionally, the study aims to test the FFM-BIA obtained using a previous predictive equation that used skeletal maturity as a variable. METHOD: The participants (n = 169 male adolescent athletes) were randomly divided into two groups: development of a new predictive equation (n = 113), and cross-validation (n = 56). The concordance test betwee

Development and Preliminary Testing of the Staffordshire Questionnaire for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (SQ-AIS): Content and Face Validity.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is a structural spinal deformity with implications for health-related quality of life (HR-QoL). The Scoliosis Research Society-22 revised (SRS-22r) questionnaire is the standard for HR-QoL assessment. However, studies have identified limitations with the SRS-22r, including content and face validity issues, reliability concerns, and language appropriateness. This study aimed to develop and validate a patient-reported questionnaire, the Staffordshire Questionnaire for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (SQ-AIS), to assess the impact of AIS on HR-Q

Development of Notch-Free, Pre-Bent Rod Applicable for Posterior Corrective Surgery of Thoracolumbar/Lumbar Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), the most common pediatric musculoskeletal disorder, causes a three-dimensional spine deformity. Lenke type 5 AIS is defined as a structural thoracolumbar/lumbar curve with nonstructural thoracic curves. Although a rod curvature will affect clinical outcomes, intraoperative contouring of the straight rod depends on the surgeon's knowledge and experience. This study aimed to determine the optimum rod geometries to provide a pre-bent rod system for posterior spinal surgery in patients with Lenke type 5 AIS. These pre-bent rods will be beneficial for achievin

Adolescent mothers and their children affected by HIV-An exploration of maternal mental health, and child cognitive development.

BACKGROUND: Some children born to adolescent mothers may have developmental challenges, while others do not. Research focusing on which children of adolescent mothers are at the highest risk for cognitive delay is still required. Both maternal HIV status and maternal mental health may affect child development. An examination of maternal mental health, especially in the presence of maternal HIV infection may be timely. This study explores the relationship between the mental health of adolescent mothers (comparing those living with and not living with HIV) and the cognitive development performan

Development of a transdiagnostic, low-intensity, psychological intervention for common adolescent mental health problems in Indian secondary schools.

BACKGROUND: The PRIDE programme aims to establish a suite of transdiagnostic psychological interventions organised around a stepped care system in Indian secondary schools. This paper describes the development of a low-intensity, first-line component of the PRIDE model. METHOD: Contextual and global evidence informed an intervention 'blueprint' with problem solving as the primary practice element. Successive iterations were tested and modified across two pilot cohort studies (N = 45; N = 39). Participants were aged 13-20 years and presenting with elevated mental health symptoms in New Delhi s

Resting-State Functional Connectivity and Psychotic-like Experiences in Childhood: Results From the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

BACKGROUND: Psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) during childhood are associated with greater risk of developing a psychotic disorder (and other mental disorders), highlighting the importance of identifying neural correlates of childhood PLEs. Three major cortical networks-the cingulo-opercular network (CON), default mode network (DMN), and frontoparietal network-are consistently implicated in psychosis and PLEs in adults. However, it is unclear whether variation in functional connectivity is associated with PLEs in school-aged children. METHODS: Using hierarchical linear models, we examined the
