Strengthening Adolescent Sexual Health Literacy through Targeted Educational Interventions in German Secondary Schools.

Adolescents are a key population in STI prevention, yet many lack foundational knowledge and access to reliable information. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a targeted sexual health education lecture on knowledge about STIs and HPV vaccination as well as behavioral intentions in Bavaria, Germany. We conducted a prospective, anonymized survey with students from secondary schools across Bavaria. An online questionnaire was completed before (t = 1; n = 5,988) and after (t = 2; n = 4,739) a standardized, extracurricular sexual health lecture. Participants were aged 14-20 years (mean age

Acceptance, needs and demands of e-mental health interventions in adolescent elite athletes.

BACKGROUND: Elite sports place high psychological and physical demands on adolescent elite athletes, increasing the risk for mental health problems. E-mental health interventions may offer flexible and low-threshold support. This study investigated adolescent elite athletes' acceptance of e-mental health interventions, identified predictors of acceptance, and explored their specific needs and demands. METHODS: Data from N = 217 adolescent elite athletes (age range: 14-17 years) participating in a web-based survey (March 2022-March 2023) were analyzed. Frequencies for preferred program feature

Health lifestyle profiles and adolescent suicidality: A critical appraisal of Bitar et al.

As a former practitioner who worked with adolescents in acute psychological distress, I read with great interest the study recently published by Bitar et al. (2026). The authors argue that "traditional approaches to understanding youth suicide risk have often focused on individual risk behaviors (…) in isolation," whereas adolescents' habits "often form interconnected patterns, known as health lifestyles, which reflect both their personal choices and the social environments they navigate" (p. 1). This framing, combined with the authors' strong emphasis on prevention and intervention, naturally

International consensus on adolescent metabolic health: prevention of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: The global rise in adolescent obesity is driving an aggressive phenotype of type 2 diabetes (T2D), which is marked by rapid progression and premature mortality. Therefore, evidence-based, internationally applicable prevention guidelines are urgently needed. METHODS: A multidisciplinary international panel (n = 21) developed consensus recommendations through a systematic literature review (utilizing Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, Cochrane, and EMBASE for the years 2000–2025) and a structured meeting process (held from October 2024 to December 2025). Consensus required ≥ 80% agreeme

Adolescent circadian sleep health: a review of multimodal assessment strategies and clinical implications.

The adolescent developmental period is marked by increased social and academic demands, as well as biological changes that lead to profound shifts in sleep and circadian timing. Circadian misalignment, short sleep duration, and irregular sleep patterns are prevalent among adolescents and are linked to a wide range of negative outcomes, including impaired emotional regulation, diminished academic performance, and increased cardiometabolic disease risk. While efforts to promote adolescent sleep health have grown, the multidimensional nature of circadian sleep health remains underassessed in both

Moderators of Mental Health Outcomes Following Childhood and Adolescent Image-Based Sexual Abuse.

Image-based sexual abuse (IBSA) during childhood and adolescence is linked to substantial mental health risk, yet harms are not experienced uniformly. This study tested moderators of the association between cumulative IBSA exposure (number of IBSA forms endorsed before age 18) and psychological distress, suicide attempts, and self-harm in a diverse U.S. convenience sample of 2,854 young adults who reported 4,205 incidents of IBSA during childhood or adolescence. In fully adjusted models, the main effects of cumulative IBSA exposure were not statistically significant; however, its associations

Developmental Dysgraphia in Child and Adolescent Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing: An Integrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Developmental dysgraphia affects 5% to 20% of school-age children and reaches 59% among children with ADHD or autism. The condition produces task avoidance, eroded self-esteem, and behavioral presentations that frequently result in psychiatric referral for anxiety, depression, school refusal, and behavioral disturbance. More than 37% of children with learning disabilities reach clinical thresholds for affective and ADHD problems. Despite this clinical footprint, dysgraphia remains nosologically contested and rarely identified within psychiatric evaluation. OBJECTIVES: This integra

Investigating the effects of a novel gamified cognitive training on adolescent mental health.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a time of increased emotional volatility, with emotion regulation still developing. Training the cognitive substrate of successful emotion regulation has been shown to benefit adolescents' mental health. However, cognitive training interventions often have low adherence rates in this age group. The current study therefore trialled a novel gamified cognitive training program in adolescents. METHODS: A longitudinal study was conducted throughout 2023 where 144 culturally diverse adolescents (13-16 years, 48% female) completed 12 days of either a novel gamified affecti

Policy Pressures and Inequality: The Challenges Facing Adolescent Health in Times of Crisis.

Austerity measures following the 2007 financial crisis, along with the economic and social challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, have profoundly affected the living conditions of adolescents and their families, influencing their experiences and opportunities. This study aimed to examine socioeconomic position (SEP) inequalities across various health-related conditions among adolescents aged 12 to 19 years in central Catalonia. This cross-sectional study utilized data from a cohort of high school students during the 2021-2022 academic year, comprising a sample of 9.265 students (50.8% gi

Adolescent mental health in vulnerable urban contexts in Paraguay post-COVID-19 pandemic.

This study explored the mental health and well-being of 267 adolescents in two vulnerable urban communities in Paraguay, using a mixed-methods convergent triangulation design. Quantitative measures included the Psychological Well-Being Scale for Youth (BIEPS-J), the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21), and the Drug Abuse Screening Test (DAST-10). Qualitative data on mental health subjective experiences and community perspectives were collected through semi-structured focus groups. Results revealed that a significant portion of adolescents reported moderate-to-extremely severe level

Prenatal and Childhood Phthalate Mixtures and Adolescent Sleep Health in the HOME Study.

BACKGROUND: The biological mechanisms linking early life phthalate exposure with adverse behaviors and cardiometabolic conditions also impact sleep health, but whether early life exposure impacts adolescent sleep is unknown. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated whether gestational and childhood urinary phthalate metabolite mixtures were associated with sleep characteristics during adolescence. We also examined periods of heightened susceptibility to individual phthalates. METHODS: In the Health Outcomes and Measures of the Environment (HOME) Study (Cincinnati, Ohio; 2003-2006; n=156), we quantified urin

Perceived Neighborhood Social Environment and Adolescent Depressive Symptoms: Insights from the Add Health.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents experience major depression at disproportionately higher rates than their adult counterparts. Perceived neighborhood social environment (PNSE) has been linked with depressive symptoms among adolescents. The primary aim was to investigate the relationships between each PNSE and depressive symptoms. The secondary aim was to examine whether these associations may be varied by gender and race/ethnicity. METHODS: Participants (n = 6083; mean age = 15.4) from the 1994-1995 National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) were asked to respond to items

Psychosocial Risks and Adolescent Mental Health: The Moderating Role of Objective Neighborhood Characteristics.

PURPOSE: Although previous studies have examined the association between youth psychosocial risks and their perceptions of their neighborhood, it is unclear how objective neighborhood characteristics are associated with psychosocial risks and mental health symptoms among adolescents. We investigated how neighborhood characteristics moderate the relationship between youth psychosocial characteristics and mental health symptoms. METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined 13,837 emergency department visits by 14-18-year-olds who completed a standardized Behavioral Health Screening in a tertiar

Editorial: Understanding Adolescent Mental Health Disparities Through the Lens of Environmental Stress Exposure.

Increasing evidence suggests that, as in other medical fields, there are pronounced pediatric mental health disparities with greater burden among marginalized racial and ethnic youth. The reasons for these disparities are not fully understood. One way to explain pediatric mental health disparities is through the lens of environmental stress as a driver of mental health burden, given that marginalized populations are exposed to more structural and individual stress. Although traditionally stress has been linked to specific psychiatric disorders that fall under the umbrella of "stress-related di
