Comparison of periodontitis patients' classification in the 2018 versus 1999 classification.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess how the 2018 and 1999 classifications of periodontal diseases reflect (a) patients' characteristics, (b) dise … tion, most patients suffered from generalized severe chronic periodontitis (203/251) or generalized aggressive periodontitis (45/251). Patients with aggressive periodontitis were younger and less often female or smokers. They showed similar TL (0.25 ± 0.22 teeth/patient*year) as generalized severe chronic periodontitis patients (0.23 ± 0.25 teeth/patient*year). According …

Epidemiology and risk factors of periodontal diseases.

Periodontal diseases are chronic inflammatory disorders encompassing destructive and nondestructive diseases of the periodontal supporting tissues of teeth. Gingivitis is a nondestructive disease ubiquitous in populations of children and adults globally. Aggressive periodontitis is characterized by severe and rapid loss of periodontal attachment often commencing at or after the circumpubertal age and is more prevalent among Latin Americans and subjects of African descent, and least common among Caucasians. Chronic periodontitis is a common disease and may occur in most age groups, but is most …

Alarm anti-protease trappin-2 negatively correlates with proinflammatory cytokines in patients with periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Trappin-2 is a potent biologically active serine protease inhibitor with anti-inflammatory properties that has also been characterized as an "alarm anti-protease." Although the importance of trappin-2 in several chronic infections has been demonstrated, its potential involvement in periodontitis remains undefined. This study aims to investigate salivary levels of trappin-2 and interleukin (IL)-1β in periodontally healthy individuals and patients with gingivitis or generalized chronic periodontitis (CP) or aggressive periodontitis (GAgP). METHODS: Whole unstimulated saliva samples …

[Progression and stagnation of periodontal disease].

Local factors may contribute to acute exacerbations of the periodontal disease, however, their pathological basis is systemically established. The more bacteria and bacterial products get into the periodontal tissue the more serious is destruction. Host's resistance controls composition of the subepithelial bacterial flora. Under condition of defective phagocyte function bacteria, otherwise occurring rarely in the pocket, multiply quickly and penetrate the periodontal pocket epithelium. Specific immune defence can stop them only in the subepithelial conjunctive tissue causing its destruction.

1985 Kreshover lecture. Molecular factors influencing neutrophil defects in periodontal disease.

Major advances in our understanding of the role of the neutrophil in host defense against periodontal organisms have been made through studies of localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP). Several lines of evidence suggest that LJP is an infectious process closely associated with Actinobacillus (Haemophilus) actinomycetemomitans as a causative agent, although other organisms may also participate. The immunologic profile of LJP patients suggests that a cell-associated neutrophil locomotory dysfunction is a key underlying immunodeficiency resulting in increased susceptibility to periodontal infecti

Genetic polymorphisms associated with periodontitis in Japanese populations: A comprehensive review of pathways, interactions, and clinical implications.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the supporting structures of teeth, with increasing evidence supporting a significant genetic component in disease susceptibility. This comprehensive review evaluated the associations between genetic polymorphisms and periodontitis in Japanese populations. This narrative review synthesizes available evidence without employing meta-analytical methods. Analysis of relevant studies revealed population-specific genetic architecture, with patterns that suggest possible differences from those observed in Western populations. Significant assoc

Elevated oral and systemic levels of soluble triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-1 (sTREM-1) in periodontitis.

The Triggering Receptor Expressed on Myeloid cells 1 (TREM-1) is a cell-surface receptor of the immunoglobulin superfamily, involved in the … va and serum of individuals without periodontitis (control) and persons with chronic or generalized aggressive periodontitis. In saliva, sTREM-1 concentrations were higher in chronic and aggressive periodontitis than in the control group, by 3.3-fold and 5.6-fold, respectively. In serum, these differences were 1.7-fold and 2-fold, respectively. However, there were no sign …

Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans serotype-specific genotypes and periodontal status in Brazilian subjects.

Periodontitis is associated with members of the oral microbiota, such as Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans. To our knowledge, this is the … rotype strains. Around 78% subjects had single-serotype infection. Mixed infection was seen only in aggressive periodontitis patients. An association between serotype b and healthy periodontium and between serotype c and chronic periodontitis was observed. Our results diverge from those previously reported, which may be explained by specific distribution patterns in disti …

[The stages of comprehensive periodontal therapy--diagnosis-driven treatment planning].

The rationale and the stages of the comprehensive periodontal treatment are overviewed. The consecutive phases are logically following each other. Basically three major therapeutical categories can be established, such as: 1. absolutely healthy from periodontal point of view, 2. gingivitis, 3. periodontitis. Within the periodontitis group the basic principles and strategies are totally different for the management of chronic and aggressive periodontitis cases. Principally the comprehensive periodontal therapy can be divided into four main phases: phase I. initial or cause related therapy, phas…

Periodontal microbiology in Latin America.

This review article describes the microbiota associated with periodontal disease in Latin America. This vast territory includes 22 nations, … tans. The 'red complex' bacterial pathogens and A. actinomycetemcomitans predominate in chronic and aggressive periodontitis, but gram-negative enteric rods and herpesviruses can also play important periodontopathic roles in Latin America. The key to minimizing the risk of periodontal disease is control of the pathogens, and new low-cost periodontal treatments deserve ser …
