Middle pleistocene human remains from Tourville-la-Rivière (Normandy, France) and their archaeological context.

Despite numerous sites of great antiquity having been excavated since the end of the 19th century, Middle Pleistocene human fossils are still extremely rare in northwestern Europe. Apart from the two partial crania from Biache-Saint-Vaast in northern France, all known human fossils from this period have been found from ten sites in either Germany or England. Here we report the discovery of three long bones from the same left upper limb discovered at the open-air site of Tourville-la-Rivière in the Seine Valley of northern France. New U-series and combined US-ESR dating on animal teeth produced

Temporal relationship between pauses in nasal airflow and desaturation in preterm infants.

Physiological recordings were undertaken to study the temporal relationship between apnea, defined as pauses in nasal airflow (PNA), and desaturation in preterm infants. Seventeen infants with a history of apnea of prematurity were studied on 21 occasions. Median (range) birthweight was 1,180 g (575-2,475) and gestation was 30 weeks (26-33). Median age at time of study was 10 days (range, 2-52). Arterial beat to beat oxygen saturation (SaO(2)), photoplethysmographic waveform, electrocardiogram, abdominal and ribcage breathing movements, and nasal airflow were recorded. Falls in SaO(2) > or = 3

[Surgical Setup and Perioperative Management for Endoscopic Transsphenoidal Surgery].

Endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery has been the most commonly performed neuroendoscopic procedure in Japan since its reimbursement category was introduced in 2012. Although the surgical technique is now largely standardized, perioperative management and operating room setup still vary among institutions. At our center, patients are positioned in a semi-Fowler's posture with the head elevated to reduce venous bleeding from the cavernous sinus, while carefully monitoring the risk of venous air embolism. A slight vertex-up angle facilitates a natural instrument trajectory and is adjusted accordin

Vertical motions in clouds from EarthCare satellite and a global storm-resolving modeling.

Understanding vertical motions in clouds is essential for improving weather and climate models but remains challenging due to limited observations. The newly launched EarthCARE satellite with a Doppler radar now provides global measurements of how fast particles fall through clouds, offering a way to estimate vertical air movements. In this study, we provide an initial assessment of EarthCARE’s Doppler radar observations by comparing them with high-resolution global simulations using NICAM and a satellite simulator. We analyze two representative cases of frontal and convective precipitation to…

Orbital and Premaxillary Emphysema as a Result of Nose-Blowing Following Blepharoplasty.

A 41-year-old man presented with sudden-onset swelling, redness, and pain in the right eye, 4 days after bilateral upper and lower eyelid blepharoplasty. The symptoms were preceded by a forceful nose-blowing episode. Upon examination, periorbital edema and subcutaneous crepitus were observed, along with limitations in upward gaze. Computed tomography revealed bilateral premaxillary and extraconal air accumulation. Since there was no optic nerve ischemia or orbital compartment syndrome, the patient was closely monitored. Spontaneous regression of the emphysema was observed during follow-ups. Or

Body temperature regulation in the newborn infant: interaction with sleep and clinical implications.

Thermoregulation in newborn infant differs from that of adult. Comparisons between sleep stages show that, during rapid eye movements (REM) sleep, the impairment of thermoregulatory responses in adult is not observed in newborn. Both behavioral and autonomic temperature regulations are always operative in the range of air temperatures usually imposed. The interaction between sleep and thermoregulation seems to be less important in newborns than in adults, suggesting that sleep processes are well protected, reducing the probability of occurrence of central dysfunction. According to the model de

Kinesthesia Is Not Affected by Functional Ankle Instability Status.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether subjects with functional ankle instability suffered kinesthetic deficits in the injured ankle compared with the healthy ankle and to examine the effect of prophylactic ankle bracing on kinesthesia in uninjured and functionally unstable ankles. DESIGN AND SETTING: We tested subjects over 4 consecutive days in a climate-controlled athletic training/sports medicine laboratory setting. A single-group time-series design enabled all subjects to serve as their own controls. A different bracing condition was tested on each of those occasions. SUBJECTS: Sixteen subjects

Sigmoid colon perforation presumed to be stercoral in origin in an elderly patient with chronic constipation: a case report.

Stercoral perforation (SP) is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening complication of chronic constipation that predominantly affects elderly individuals. Early diagnosis is challenging because of nonspecific clinical manifestations and the risk of rapid progression to feculent peritonitis and sepsis. We report the case of an 85-year-old woman who presented with severe acute lower abdominal pain, abdominal distension, nausea, vomiting, and absence of flatus or bowel movements. She had a 6-month history of chronic constipation and long-term antihypertensive therapy with levamlodipine besyl

Best practices for tracing the palate in ultrasound images.

Ultrasound (US) imaging is a powerful tool for visualizing the vocal tract and tongue motion during speech articulation. A key aspect of analyzing tongue motion is accurately tracing the palate's contour in US images, as it provides a fixed anatomical reference for measuring tongue position and deformation. However, accurately tracing the palate in US images remains challenging due to limited visibility caused by the air gap between the palate and the tongue. To address this limitation, we evaluate the reproducibility of manual palate tracing using methods that rely on varying levels of assist

Evaluation of air quality at the Birmingham New Street Railway Station.

Air pollution from diesel emissions is becoming an increased international concern, and whilst attention has been primarily focused on the automotive industry, concerns have also been raised about emissions from diesel rail vehicles. This paper reports an extensive series of measurements made at the Birmingham New Street station, a major rail interchange in the Midlands of England, with a mix of diesel and electric train movements, which is of particular concern because of the enclosed nature of the platforms. This study was undertaken in collaboration with Network Rail to better understand th

Effect of subcutaneous butylscopolamine administration in the reduction of peristaltic artifacts in 1.5-T MR fast abdominal examinations.

In abdominal MR imaging, ghost artifacts from noncyclic bowel movements can reduce the quality of the images. Although pharmacologic suppression of motion is effective, no study has being conducted to analyze the influence of drug motion suppression on fast breath-hold 1.5-T examinations of the upper abdomen. A prospective, randomized, double-blind trial was conducted in 50 patients. Patients were randomly distributed into two groups: The control group received only an oral solution, whereas the other group received the oral solution plus a subcutaneous injection of 20 mg of butylscopolamine 1

Remote monitoring of air pollutant emissions from point sources by a mobile lidar/sodar system.

This paper describes remote monitoring of air pollutant emissions by a mobile lidar (light detection and ranging)/ sodar (sound detection and ranging) system. First, measurements are carried out in the flue gas plume of a public power plant. The investigations focus mainly on quantifying SO2 emissions, but the uncertainties of such measurements are also emphasized. Furthermore, an example providing valuable data sets for the development and validation of plume dispersion models is outlined with measurements of the dilution of SO2 along the plume axis. Series of repeated determinations of SO2 e

GABAA receptor antagonism at the hypoglossal motor nucleus increases genioglossus muscle activity in NREM but not REM sleep.

The pharyngeal muscles, such as the genioglossus (GG) muscle of the tongue, are important for effective lung ventilation since they maintain an open airspace. Rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep, however, recruits powerful neural mechanisms that can abolish GG activity, even during strong reflex respiratory stimulation by elevated CO2. In vitro studies have demonstrated the presence of GABAA receptors on hypoglossal motoneurons, and these and other data have led to the speculation that GABAA mechanisms may contribute to the suppression of hypoglossal motor outflow to the GG muscle in REM sleep. We

Determinants of poststimulus potentiation in humans during NREM sleep.

To test whether active hyperventilation activates the "afterdischarge" mechanism during non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep, we investigated the effect of abrupt termination of active hypoxia-induced hyperventilation in normal subjects during NREM sleep. Hypoxia was induced for 15 s, 30 s, 1 min, and 5 min. The last two durations were studied under both isocapnic and hypocapnic conditions. Hypoxia was abruptly terminated with 100% inspiratory O2 fraction. Several room air-to-hyperoxia transitions were performed to establish a control period for hyperoxia after hypoxia transitions. Transient hy

Reducing spatial clustering to prevent tuberculosis transmission in a busy Zambian hospital: a modelling study based on person movements, environmental and clinical data.

BACKGROUND: Hospitals in high-burden tuberculosis (TB) settings are important sites of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) transmission, yet the impact of infection prevention and control (IPC) measures targeting crowding is poorly understood. We assessed the effects of simple interventions to reduce spatial clustering and airborne transmission in a Zambian hospital. METHODS AND FINDINGS: From June to August 2024, we prospectively collected clinical data on presumptive (symptom-based screening) and confirmed (Xpert-positive, chest X-ray) TB patients, indoor CO2 levels, bioaerosol samples, and co

The Hydraulic Mechanism in the Orbital Blowout Fracture Because of a High-Pressure Air Gun Injury.

There are 2 predominant mechanisms that are used to explain the pathogenesis of orbital blowout fracture; these include hydraulic and buckling mechanisms. Still, however, its pathophysiology remains uncertain. To date, studies in this series have been conducted using dry skulls, cadavers, or animals. But few clinical studies have been conducted to examine whether the hydraulic mechanism is involved in the occurrence of pure orbital blowout fracture. The authors experienced a case of a 52-year-old man who had a pure medial blowout fracture after sustaining an eye injury because of a high-pressu

Dacryocystography in a cat with orbital pneumatosis.

A 2-year-old neutered male European short-haired cat was presented for a persistent discharge from the scar of previous left eye enucleation, performed 6 months prior by the referring veterinarian. A surgical exploration of the orbit was performed and retained nictitating membrane glandular and conjunctival tissues were removed. Eleven days later, the cat developed an orbital pneumatosis caused by retrograde movement of air through a patent nasolacrimal system and diagnosed by survey radiographic examination of the skull. Nasolacrimal system patency was assessed by dacryocystography performed

Chest wall abnormalities and their clinical significance in childhood.

The thorax consists of the rib cage and the respiratory muscles. It houses and protects the various intrathoracic organs such as the lungs, heart, vessels, esophagus, nerves etc. It also serves as the so-called "respiratory pump" that generates the movement of air into the lungs while it prevents their total collapse during exhalation. In order to be performed these functions depend on the structural and functional integrity of the rib cage and of the respiratory muscles. Any condition (congenital or acquired) that may affect either one of these components is going to have serious implications
