Concurrent and predictive validity of the Alberta Infant Motor Scale and the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales-2 administered to infants born preterm in Norway.

BACKGROUND: The correlation between the Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS) and the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales-2 (PDMS-2) has not previously been assessed in Norwegian infants. Our purpose was to investigate the concurrent validity of the AIMS and the PDMS-2 in a group of high-risk infants, and to investigate the predictive validity of the two tests for atypical motor function at 24 months post term age (PTA). METHODS: This is a retrospective study of the AIMS and the PDMS-2 administered to infants born preterm with gestational age ≤ 32 weeks (n = 139) who had participated in a randomiz…

A Cross-Sectional, Retrospective Evaluation of Opt-Out Sexually Transmitted Infection Screening at Admission in a Short-Term Correctional Facility in Alberta, Canada.

Incarcerated populations experience higher rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) than the general population, alongside inconsistent testing strategies. In response, universal opt-out STIs (chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and HIV) screening was implemented at admission in a short-term correctional facility in Alberta, Canada, for individuals ≤35 years. A cross-sectional, retrospective evaluation of testing outcomes between March 2018 and February 2020 was completed. Descriptive statistics were used to stratify STIs by gender, age group, and date for univariate analysis. Despite low u…

Distribution of parasites of slimy sculpin Cottus cognatus Richardson, 1836 (Scorpaeniformes: Cottidae) in the Athabasca drainage, Alberta, Canada, and their relation to water quality.

The composition and diversity of parasite communities are useful tools to characterise ecosystem health and integrity. Environmental disturbances may affect parasite infection in fish directly, by their effects on the free-living stages, or indirectly, on the intermediate hosts. Slimy sculpins, Cottus cognatus, a small fish inhabiting cold waters of North America, have been considered as sentinels due to their limited mobility, often occupying relatively small areas throughout their lives and thus reflecting the local environment. Ninety-six specimens of C. cognatus were sampled from four trib

Quantitative Evaluation of Ischemic Core Volume in GE's CT Perfusion Imaging Analysis Software and Its Relationship to Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score.

OBJECTIVE: Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging of cerebral perfusion are useful in determining the indication of mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for acute ischemic stroke. RAPID (iSchemaView, Menlo Park, CA, USA) is the most common software for analyzing brain perfusion images worldwide, but various other software are also available. The optimal threshold value for each software is different, and each has its characteristics. This study investigated the relationship between the quantitative evaluation of ischemic core volume (ICV) and the Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score …

Rates of post procedural prophylactic antibiotic use following cardiac implantable electronic device insertion and the impact on surgical site infections in Alberta, Canada.

BACKGROUND: The necessity of post procedural prophylactic antibiotics following clean surgeries is controversial. While most evidence suggests that there is no benefit from these additional antibiotics and guidelines do not support their use, there is a paucity of evidence as to how often they are still being used and their impact on infection outcomes. The current study assessed the use of prophylactic antibiotics following cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) implantations in the province of Alberta, and their impact on infection and mortality. METHODS: We conducted a population-bas…

Modified diffusion-weighted imaging-Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score including deep white matter lesions predicts symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage following intravenous thrombolysis.

The Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score (ASPECTS) is widely used for the assessment of early ischemic changes (EICs) before thrombolysis. However, for symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH) following intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA), the prediction abilities of CT-ASPECTS, diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI)-ASPECTS, and DWI-ASPECTS including EICs in deep white matter (DWI-ASPECTS + W) are unclear. We investigated associations between each score and sICH following intravenous rt-PA. Data from consecutive patients who received intravenous rt-PA f…

Effectiveness of Alberta Family Integrated Care on infant length of stay in level II neonatal intensive care units: a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Parents of infants in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) are often unintentionally marginalized in pursuit of optimal clinical care. Family Integrated Care (FICare) was developed to support families as part of their infants' care team in level III NICUs. We adapted the model for level II NICUs in Alberta, Canada, and evaluated whether the new Alberta FICare™ model decreased hospital length of stay (LOS) in preterm infants without concomitant increases in readmissions and emergency department visits. METHODS: In this pragmatic cluster randomized controlled trial conducted betwee…

Validation of automated Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS) software for detection of early ischemic changes on non-contrast brain CT scans.

PURPOSE: In ASPECTS, 10 brain regions are scored visually for presence of acute ischemic stroke damage. We evaluated automated ASPECTS in comparison to expert readers. METHODS: Consecutive, baseline non-contrast CT-scans (5-mm slice thickness) from the prospective MR CLEAN trial (n = 459, MR CLEAN Netherlands Trial Registry number: NTR1804) were evaluated. A two-observer consensus for ASPECTS regions (normal/abnormal) was used as reference standard for training and testing (0.2/0.8 division). Two other observers provided individual ASPECTS-region scores. The Automated ASPECTS software was app

How well do ICD-9 physician claim diagnostic codes identify confirmed pertussis cases in Alberta, Canada? A Canadian Immunization Research Network (CIRN) Study.

BACKGROUND: Rates of Bordetella pertussis have been increasing in Alberta, Canada despite vaccination programs. Waning immunity from existing acellular component vaccines may be contributing to this. Vaccine effectiveness can be estimated using a variety of data sources including diagnostic codes from physician billing claims, public health records, reportable disease and laboratory databases. We sought to determine if diagnostic codes from billing claims (administrative data) are adequately sensitive and specific to identify pertussis cases among patients who had undergone disease-specific la…

Major outbreak of pertussis in northern Alberta, Canada: analysis of discrepant direct fluorescent-antibody and culture results by using polymerase chain reaction methodology.

A major outbreak of 5,683 cases of pertussis occurred in northern Alberta, Canada, from December 1989 to January 1991. The outbreak highlighted a number of problems with current methods of pertussis diagnosis. In particular, an exceptionally high proportion of direct fluorescent-antibody (DFA)-positive, culture-negative specimens (88.4%) was identified. We took this opportunity to use polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methodology to examine whether the low culture rates were due to specimens containing dead organisms or whether the DFA results represented high numbers of false-positive results. …

Baseline Characteristics of Individuals with Metastatic Cancer Enrolled in the Alberta Cancer Exercise Study and 12-Week Findings for Symptom-Related and Physical Fitness Measures.

Exercise has been found to be safe and beneficial for people with advanced cancers, but more research is needed to understand how best to design and implement exercise programming. The Alberta Cancer Exercise (ACE) study examines the effectiveness and implementation of a 12-week community-based exercise program in Alberta, Canada, for people diagnosed with cancer. Here, we describe the characteristics of individuals with metastatic cancer enrolled in the ACE program and report 12-week changes in self-reported and objective outcomes. Of 306 participants, 274 (89.5%) completed the 12-week study.…
