Attitudes Towards Drinking in the Presence of Small Children: Do the Associations With Parenthood and Own Risky Drinking Change When Per Capita Alcohol Consumption Declines?

INTRODUCTION: This study explores changes in Finnish adults' attitudes towards alcohol use and getting drunk in the presence of small children and the changes in these attitudes in a period of declining alcohol consumption in Finland. It also examines whether these attitudes differ by respondents' parental status and by their own risky drinking. METHODS: Data were drawn from nationally representative cross-sectional surveys conducted in 2008 (N = 2500), 2016 (N = 1857) and 2023 (N = 2133) in mainland Finland. Poisson regression assessed the effects of time, parenthood and AUDIT scores on two

HIV-related Stigma and Alcohol Involvement Among People with HIV Who Engage in Unhealthy Drinking.

Unhealthy alcohol use is linked to several adverse health outcomes among people with HIV (PWH). HIV-related stigma (HRS) has been identified as a potential risk factor for unhealthy drinking, but research has been limited, and findings have been equivocal. This cross-sectional study examined associations between HRS and alcohol-related indices in a national sample of PWH with unhealthy alcohol use enrolled in an intervention trial for one of two common comorbidities that impact functioning among PWH (i.e., chronic pain or physical inactivity; n = 331). Generalized structural equation modeling

Alcohol drinking is associated with greater calcium activity in mouse central amygdala dynorphin-expressing neurons.

UNLABELLED: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a chronic disease that poses significant economic burden and health risks. It is pivotal to better understand brain mechanisms engaged by alcohol that promote misuse. The central amygdala (CeA) has emerged as a key mediator of excessive preclinical alcohol consumption. A dynorphin-expressing subpopulation within the CeA (CeA Dyn ) has been implicated in excessive alcohol drinking, yet how cellular activity of CeA Dyn neurons relates to ongoing alcohol drinking is not well-understood. The current study interrogated the engagement of CeA Dyn neurons in m…

Synchrony between midbrain gene transcription and dopamine terminal regulation is modulated by chronic alcohol drinking.

Alcohol use disorder is marked by disrupted behavioral and emotional states which persist into abstinence. The enduring synaptic alterations that remain despite the absence of alcohol are of interest for interventions to prevent relapse. Here, 28 male rhesus macaques underwent over 20 months of alcohol drinking interspersed with three 30-day forced abstinence periods. After the last abstinence period, we paired direct sub-second dopamine monitoring via ex vivo voltammetry in nucleus accumbens core with RNA-sequencing of the ventral tegmental area. We found persistent augmentation of dopamine t…

Gendered Racism and Asian American Men's Hazardous Alcohol Use: The Role of Drinking to Cope.

Background: Gendered racism has been previously associated with greater alcohol use among Asian American men (AAM), yet the mechanisms underlying this association are not fully understood. Objectives: This study thus investigated whether gendered racism is associated with hazardous alcohol use among AAM directly and indirectly via drinking to cope and resistance and empowerment against racism. 253 AAM (M = 36.75 years old) completed an online cross-sectional survey that contained the study questionnaires. Hierarchical regression analyses examined the association between gendered racism and haz

Latent motivational profiles of behavioral regulations for drinking distinguish groups by alcohol consumption and consequences.

BACKGROUND: Self-determination theory characterizes drinking motives according to level of autonomy and locus of control and aligns with harm reduction approaches to alcohol use. This study used latent profile analysis (LPA) to identify motivational profiles of self-determined behavioral regulations for drinking and to test their associations with sociodemographic variables and alcohol consumption and outcomes. METHODS: Adults aged 18-57 (N = 630, Mage = 21.5, 55% female, 88% undergraduates) reported typical alcohol consumption (Daily Drinking Questionnaire), consequences (Brief Young Adult A

Apremilast reduces co-occurring alcohol drinking and mechanical allodynia and regulates central amygdala GABAergic transmission.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Children in families facing energy insecurity have greater odds of poor health and developmental problems. In this study of families who requested and received medical certification for utility shut-off protection and were contacted by our Medical Legal Partnership (MLP), we aimed to assess concurrent health-related social needs related to utilities, housing, finances, and nutrition. METHODS: After medical certificates were completed at our academic pediatric center, our MLP office contacted families and assessed utility concerns as well as other health, social, and

Chronic Alcohol Drinking Impairs Recognition Memory And Insulin-Associated Genes In The Medial Prefrontal Cortex.

Chronic alcohol drinking increases susceptibility to cognitive impairment; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of chronic alcohol drinking on working and recognition memory in a Marchigian Sardinian alcohol-preferring (msP) rat line. Due to interest in insulin-based medications for alcohol use disorder, we examined insulin/insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) genes in the prelimbic (PL) and infralimbic (IL) medial prefrontal cortex, a region linked to alcohol dependence and cognition. Male and female msPs received access to alcohol (20%…

Exploratory analysis of blood alcohol concentration-related technology use and drinking outcomes among young adults.

BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth) technology use may reduce alcohol use and related negative consequences; however, little is known about its efficacy without prompting from researchers or pay-per-use. This exploratory analysis assessed relationships between mHealth technology use frequency and alcohol-use outcomes. METHODS: Young adults who drink heavily (N = 97, Mage = 23, 51% male, 64% non-Hispanic White, Mdrinks/week = 21) had the option to use three mHealth technologies (breathalyzer device/app, blood alcohol content estimator app, drink counting via text message) while drinking for 2

Does geographic availability of alcohol influence drinking in adolescents? A systematic review of literature associations.

BACKGROUND: The role of alcohol geographic availability in influencing adolescent drinking has been debated. However, clear literature consensus has not been reached. OBJECTIVE: To provide a systematic review of the associations between geographic availability of alcohol outlets measured through different methodologies and drinking outcomes in adolescents. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search (PubMed/SCOPUS/Web of Science) for articles exploring associations between alcohol availability and adolescent drinking before 2023. Original articles written in English that evaluated adolescent p

Adult alcohol drinking and emotional tone are mediated by neutral sphingomyelinase during development in males.

Alcohol use, abuse, and addiction, and resulting health hazards are highly sex-dependent with unknown mechanisms. Previously, strong links b … e to NSM function in females, similar roles in bone-mediated osteocalcin release and its effects on alcohol drinking and emotional behavior were observed. These findings support the view that the NSM and multiple downstream mechanism may be a source of the sex-differences in alcohol use and emotional behavior.

Prognostic factors for low-risk drinking and relapse in alcohol use disorder: A multimodal analysis.

This study aims to specify the determinants of low-risk alcohol drinking and relapse at different time points after detoxification in patients with severe alcohol use disorder (AUD). Fifty-four patients with AUD and 36 healthy controls (HC) were evaluated early in abstinence (T1). They underwent clinical, neuropsychological and neuroimaging (structural MRI and 18 FDG-PET) investigations. Patients with AUD were subsequently classified as "low-risk drinkers" (LR) or "relapsers" (R) based on their alcohol drinking at 6 months (T2) and 1 year (T3) after discharge, using their medical record or sel…

Polygenic risk for alcohol consumption and multisite chronic pain: Associations with ad lib drinking behavior.

Interrelations between alcohol use disorder and chronic pain have received increasing empirical attention, and several lines of evidence support the possibility of shared genetic liability. However, research on the genetic contributions to the component processes of these complex and potentially overlapping phenotypes remains scarce. The goal of the present study was to test polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for alcohol consumption and multisite chronic pain as predictors of ad lib drinking behavior during an experimental taste test. PRSs were calculated for 209 pain-free, moderate-to-heavy drinker

Alcohol Binge Drinking Selectively Stimulates Protein S-Glutathionylation in Aorta and Liver of ApoE -/- Mice.

Background: Binge drinking has become the most common and deadly pattern of excessive alcohol use in the United States, especially among younger adults. It is closely related to the increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Oxidative stress as a result of ethanol metabolism is the primary pathogenic factor for alcohol-induced end organ injury, but the role of protein S-glutathionylation-a reversible oxidative modification of protein cysteine thiol groups that mediates cellular actions by oxidants-in binge drinking-associated cardiovascular disease has not been explored. The present study defin

Blockade of alcohol excessive and "relapse" drinking in male mice by pharmacological cryptochrome (CRY) activation.

RATIONALE: Metabolic dysfunction, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and substance abuse disorders are associated with disruptions in circadian rhythm and circadian clock gene machinery. While the effects of alcohol on several core components of the clock genes have been described in rodent models, pharmacological activation or inhibition of clock gene functions has not been studied on alcohol drinking behaviors. OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether cryptochrome (CRY1/2) activator KL001 altered alcohol intake in mice in excessive and relapse-like alcohol drinking models. METHODS: Mice, subjec…

Behavioral indicators of succeeding and failing under higher-challenge compulsion-like alcohol drinking in rat.

Intake despite negative consequences (compulsivity) contributes strongly to the harm of alcohol use disorder, making the underlying psychological and circuit mechanisms of great importance. To gain insight into possible underlying action strategies, we compared rat licking microstructure across compulsion-like and non-compulsive conditions. We previously showed that drinking under a moderate-challenge, quinine-alcohol model (Alc-ModQ) shows less variable responding in many measures, suggesting a more automatic strategy to overcome challenge. Here, we reanalyzed our original data, newly focusin
