MORPHO-FUNCTIONAL CHANGES IN ENDOMETRIUM UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF CHRONIC ALCOHOLISM.

According to data that would have been obtained precisely as a result of studying the changes caused by alcohol abuse in the female body which can help solve many abnormal conditions developing in the female reproductive system, such as oligodysmenorrhea and amenorrhea, the purpose of this study was to identify changes in the endometrium that occur in chronic alcoholism. The study included sectional material, selected from women who, according to history data (interviews with relatives) and autopsy data (presence of alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver), had confirmed alcohol abuse. Microscopic ex…

Severe hypokalemia with cardiac arrest as an unusual manifestation of alcoholism.

Introduction: Unhealthy use of alcohol can be associated with serious adverse events. Patients with alcoholism and malnutrition are at high risk for electrolyte disturbances, commonly hypokalemia. Here in we describe a case of alcohol use disorder presented with weakness and subsequently developed cardiac arrest secondary to severe hypokalemia. Case description: A 51-year-old lady presented to our emergency department because of generalized body ache and marked weakness in both lower extremities for two days duration. She had a long-term history of alcoholism, consuming two to three pints of v…

Are the binary typology models of alcoholism valid in polydrug abusers?

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the dichotomy of type I/II and type A/B alcoholism typologies in opiate-dependent patients with a comorbid alcohol dependence problem (ODP-AP). METHODS: The validity assessment process comprised the information regarding the history of alcohol use (internal validity), cognitive-behavioral variables regarding substance use (external validity), and indicators of treatment during 6-month follow-up (predictive validity). RESULTS: ODP-AP subjects classified as type II/B presented an early and much more severe drinking problem and a worse clinical prognosis when considering …

Asian flushing: genetic and sociocultural factors of alcoholism among East asians.

Alcohol use can lead to a cascade of problems such as increased chances of risky behavior and negative health consequences, including alcoho … sting metabolizing alleles for ADH, ADH1B*2, and ADH1C*1, and the null allele for ALDH and ALDH2*2. Alcoholism is determined not only by the genetic deficiency but also by behaviors that involve complex interactions between genetic and sociocultural factors. The purpose of this article was to provide nurses with the most current information about genetic and …

[Neurological complications of chronic alcoholism: study of 42 observations in Guinea].

Neurologic disorders related to chronic alcoholism in traditional areas of Guinea are frequent, but reports about them are rare. We conducted the first study in Guinea on this subject and retrospectively collected 42 cases of neurologic manifestations related to alcoholism over a 7-year period. The standard findings of the literature were confirmed in our population: peak frequency after the age of 40 years (82.8%) and clear male overrepresentation (M/F sex ratio: 13/1). All the standard signs and symptoms are reported, with a clear predominance of alcoholic polyneuropathy and hepatic encephal…

Readiness to change and brain damage in patients with chronic alcoholism.

High motivation to change is a crucial triggering factor to patients' engagement in clinical treatment. This study investigates whether the low readiness to change observed in some alcoholic inpatients at treatment entry could, at least partially, be linked with macrostructural gray matter abnormalities in critical brain regions. Participants comprised 31 alcoholic patients and 27 controls, who underwent 1.5-T magnetic resonance imaging. The Readiness to Change Questionnaire, designed to assess three stages of motivation to change (precontemplation, contemplation and action stages), was comple

Does family history of alcoholism moderate naltrexone's effects on alcohol use?

OBJECTIVE: Primary outcomes from the COMBINE Study indicated support for naltrexone (Revia) on measures of abstinence and time to heavy drinking; however, effect sizes were modest. The delineation of individual difference variables that qualify these results could aid efforts to target treatment approaches appropriately. Laboratory and clinical studies have found greater effectiveness of naltrexone among men and those with familial alcoholism. The present study used multilevel modeling to investigate family history of alcoholism (FHA) based on first-degree relatives and gender as moderators of…

Effects of abstinence on brain morphology in alcoholism: a MRI study.

Chronic alcohol abuse leads to morphological changes of the brain. We investigated if these volumetric changes are reversible after a period of abstinence. For this reason 41 male and 15 female alcohol patients underwent MRI-scanning after in-patient detoxification (baseline) entering alcoholism treatment programs, and between 6 and 9 months later (follow-up), in a phase of convalescence. Additionally, 29 male and 16 female control subjects were examined. The MRI-scans were delineated and the resulting regions of interest, volumes of lateral ventricles and prefrontal lobes were expressed relat…

Bipolar disorder comorbid with alcoholism: a 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy study.

Alcoholism is highly prevalent among bipolar disorder (BD) patients, and its presence is associated with a worse outcome and refractoriness to treatment of the mood disorder. The neurobiological underpinnings that characterize this comorbidity are unknown. We sought to investigate the neurochemical profile of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) of BD patients with comorbid alcoholism. A short-TE, single-voxel (1)H spectroscopy acquisition at 1.5T from the left DLFPC of 22 alcoholic BD patients, 26 non-alcoholic BD patients and 54 healthy comparison subjects (HC) were obtained. Absolute …

PET [11C]DASB imaging of serotonin transporters in patients with alcoholism.

OBJECTIVE: Alcoholism and aggression have each been associated with neurochemical measurements suggestive of decreased serotonin synaptic transmission. We measured densities of the serotonin transporter (SERT) in a moderate-sized sample of alcoholic patients who were assessed for aggressive characteristics. METHODS: Thirty alcoholic inpatients and 18 healthy controls received a PET scan with [(11)C]-3-amino-4-(2-dimethylaminomethylphenylsulfanyl)-benzonitrile. The alcoholic inpatients were classified as aggressive or nonaggressive based on a comparison between the top third and bottom third s…

Update on neuropharmacological treatments for alcoholism: scientific basis and clinical findings.

The past decade has seen an expansion of research and knowledge on pharmacotherapy for the treatment of alcohol dependence. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved medications naltrexone and acamprosate have shown mixed results in clinical trials. Oral naltrexone and naltrexone depot formulations have generally demonstrated efficacy at treating alcohol dependence, but their treatment effect size is small, and more research is needed to compare the effects of different doses on drinking outcome. Acamprosate has demonstrated efficacy for treating alcohol dependence in European trials, bu

[Morphofunctional changes of external male genitalia in alcoholism and substance abuse].

The external male genitals (EMG) of male corpses, who abused alcohol and narcotics at lifetime, were examined. The objects were stained according to the common histological and histochemical methods. The study results are indicative of a high frequency rate of pathologic changes of the EMG in persons, who abused alcohol and narcotics at lifetime. The inflammatory, fibrosing and atrophic changes of the EMG as well as a reduced vascular permeability can be a cause for erection malfunction.

Efficacy of naltrexone and acamprosate for alcoholism treatment: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Renewed interest in medications to prevent relapse in alcoholics (i.e., antidipsotropics) resulted in approval by the Food and Drug Administration of naltrexone to treat alcohol dependence. Acamprosate, although not approved in the United States, is used in alcoholism treatment in many other parts of the world. In the absence of studies that compare the effects of these medications, we used a meta-analytic approach to the literature to compare their efficacy in alcoholism treatment. METHODS: All published placebo-controlled trials of naltrexone or acamprosate for alcohol dependenc…
