Microbial fermentation as a strategy for the abatement of peanut allergens.

Although valued for their nutritional content and flavor, peanuts are ranked among the nine major food allergens in the United States, capable of inducing life-threatening reactions mediated by immunoglobulin E (IgE). Ara h 1, Ara h 2, Ara h 3, and Ara h 6 are recognized as major allergens due to the prevalence and structural stability of their epitopes, which make them resistant to digestion and processing. To address these challenges, processing treatments of different natures have been tested (e.g., physical, chemical, and biological) to reduce the allergenic content and create safer and mo…

A Parade of Persistent and Emerging Contact Allergens - A Clinical Update.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Clinical management of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is increasingly challenging due to the growing number of allergens, complex exposure patterns, and evolving regulatory frameworks. This review aims to provide clinicians with an updated overview of well-known as well as new and emerging allergens relevant to the diagnosis and management of ACD. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent literature highlights changing exposure patterns and the identification of several new and emerging allergens, particularly in rapidly expanding consumer markets such as cosmetics and products associated …

Scalable electrochemical system for rapid on-site detection of food allergens.

Food allergies affect millions of individuals worldwide, significantly impacting personal health and the economy. While avoiding allergenic … new strategy for multi-electrode measurements, which enables the simultaneous detection of multiple allergens in a simplified electronic architecture. We designed a compact iEAT2 prototype capable of 16 electrochemical reactions. Experimental validation confirmed the independent electrochemical measurements in a simultaneous operation. Furthermore, the enti …

To preserve the health benefits of green-lipped mussel meat, it is … enic proteins were identified by mass spectrometry as actin, tropomyosin, and paramyosin. All three allergens are reported for the first time for P canaliculus. Actin is a major allergen in Paphia textile, paramyosin in Sarcoptes scarbiei, and tropomyosin in Haliotis discus. For all IgE-binding proteins, the software AllCatPro predicted high allergenicity, …

Contact allergens in moisturizers in preventative emollient therapy - A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Results of preventative emollient therapy on atopic dermatitis and food allergy trials are inconsistent. In addition to the ingredients considered beneficial, the moisturizers may contain potentially harmful haptens. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of haptens in moisturizers used in studies to prevent atopic dermatitis or food allergy and assess their correlations to the trial results. METHODS: A systematic search of studies investigating the role of emollient usage in preventing atopic dermatitis or food allergy in infants was performed from inception to December 2020.

[Analysis of airborne allergens in chronic urticaria with airway allergic diseases].

To analyze the sensitization characteristics and significance of airborne allergens in chronic urticaria (CU) with airway allergic diseases (allergic rhinitis and/or asthma). From May to August 2015, the Department of allergy, Beijing Shijitan Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University conducted an epidemiological survey of allergic diseases in grassland area of Inner Mongolia by multistage stratified cluster sampling. The results of skin prick test (SPT) for airborne allergens in 191 patients with CU and 1 132 patients with airway allergic diseases were analyzed. The statistical data w…

American Contact Dermatitis Society Allergens of the Year 2000 to 2020.

Allergic contact dermatitis is a delayed type IV hypersensitivity skin reaction to external stimuli. Patterns of dermatitis depend on allergen exposure and patch testing is the gold standard to identify causal agents. The American Contact Dermatitis Society identifies an "Allergen of the Year" in order to highlight facts about particular allergens, which may range from showing increasing prevalence of disease, to documenting low levels of relevant allergic reactions. This article reviews the allergens of the year from 2000 to 2020 with an emphasis on clinical relevance. Categories of allergens…

Atopy and Sensitization to Allergens Known to Cause Systemic Contact Dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) associated with respiratory atopy may represent a form of systemic contact dermatitis (SCD), whereby AD flares after ingestion or inhalation of allergens. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to compare the prevalence of positive patch tests to allergens known to cause SCD in AD patients with and without respiratory atopy. METHODS: This is a retrospective study of patients with AD patch tested to 23 allergens known to cause SCD. Positive patch tests were compared between AD patients with and without respiratory atopy, stratified by age and wet or dry work oc…

Cross-reaction between Formosan termite (Coptotermes formosanus) proteins and cockroach allergens.

Cockroach allergens can lead to serious allergy and asthma symptoms. Termites are evolutionarily related to cockroaches, cohabitate in human dwellings, and represent an increasing pest problem in the United States. The Formosan subterranean termite (Coptotermes formosanus) is one of the most common species in the southern United States. Several assays were used to determine if C. formosanus termite proteins cross-react with cockroach allergens. Expressed sequence tag and genomic sequencing results were searched for homology to cockroach allergens using BLAST 2.2.21 software. Whole termite extr…

[Application of recombinant latex allergens in diagnostics of occupational latex allergy].

Over many years, allergy to natural rubber latex has been a major problem among health care workers (HCW). The diagnosis of occupational allergy requires methods of high diagnostic accuracy in view of certification implications (e.g., a sick worker quits a job). With the development of molecular methods, the frequency of application of recombinant allergens it the diagnostics of allergic diseases continues to increase. This paper reviews the applicability of laboratory tests which use recombinant allergens in the diagnostics of occupational allergy. The diagnosis of latex allergy is based on t…

Strip patch testing does not affect reaction profiles of standard allergens.

BACKGROUND: It has been hypothesized that positive reactions in the strip patch test are irritant rather than allergic. OBJECTIVE: To study reaction profiles of the baseline series patch test substances applied routinely on tape-stripped skin according to the reaction index (RI) and the positivity ratio (PR). PATIENTS AND METHODS: One thousand two hundred and twenty-eight consecutive patients were routinely strip patch tested with the baseline series between January 2011 and June 2013 (intervention group). On the basis of test reactions at D3/D4, the RI, and the PR, 25 standard allergens wer…

Characterisation of potential novel allergens in the fish parasite Anisakis simplex.

The parasitic nematode Anisakis simplex occurs in fish stocks in temperate seas. A. simplex contamination of fish products is unsavoury and a health concern considering human infection with live larvae (anisakiasis) and allergic reactions to anisakid proteins in seafood. Protein extracts of A. simplex produce complex band patterns in gel electrophoresis and IgE-immunostaining. In the present study potential allergens have been characterised using sera from A. simplex-sensitised patients and proteome data obtained by mass spectrometry. A. simplex proteins were homologous to allergens in other n…

Inhaled environmental allergens and toxicants as determinants of the asthma phenotype.

The driving environmental factors behind the development of the asthma phenotype remain incompletely studied and understood. Here, we present an overview of inhaled allergic/atopic and mainly nonallergic/nonatopic or toxicant shapers of the asthma phenotype, which are present in both the indoor and outdoor environment around us. The inhaled allergic/atopic factors include fungus, mold, animal dander, cockroach, dust mites, and pollen; these allergic triggers and shapers of the asthma phenotype are considered in the context of their ability to drive the immunologic IgE response and potentially
