Epidemiology of trichinellosis in Mexico, Central and South America.

Trichinella species are widely distributed throughout the world and are found in a large number of carnivorous animals, humans and incidental hosts. The data presented in this review show that Trichinella infection has been reported in both humans and animals in Mexico, Argentina and Chile since the end of the 19th century, and more recently in Bolivia. This parasitic infection is still a public health problem in countries such as Argentina and Chile. Although efforts have focused on the control and prevention of trichinellosis in these countries, there were still human cases and outbreaks of

National immunization days: experience in Latin America.

Organization of national immunization days (NIDs) in all countries in Latin America in which polio was endemic has been one of the key elements that led to the interruption of the circulation of the wild poliovirus in 1991 from the Americas. National initiatives for control or elimination of measles using similar strategies have emerged from the successful organization of NIDs for polio eradication and lead the way to the eventual global eradication of this major killer of children. The major reasons for the success of polio eradication in the Americas were the commitment of national authoriti…

[Current situation of yellow fever in Latin America].

Yellow fever endemicity is currently stabilized in South America: an average of 115 cases has officially been notified each year since 25 years (between 12 and 304 annual cases). These figures are underevaluated but no epidemic has been observed since 1983. Only sporadic or limited grouped cases have been reported. All declared cases correspond to people who have been infected within sylvatic areas, mainly adult forestmen. Within the last years, the majority of cases have occurred in Peru and Bolivia; the other cases have been observed in Brazil, in Columbia, in Ecuador and in French Guiana (i

Early onset periodontitis in the United States of America.

A National Survey of the Oral Health of U.S. children aged 5 to 17 was conducted by the National Institute of Dental Research during the 1986-87 school year. Eleven thousand and seven adolescents aged 14 to 17 years received a periodontal assessment. Their patterns of loss of periodontal attachment as assessed by probing at mesial sites were used to classify adolescents as cases of early onset periodontitis. Approximately 0.53% of adolescents nation-wide were estimated to have localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP), 0.13% to have generalized juvenile periodontitis (GJP), and 1.61% to have inci

Contraceptive development and testing in the United States of America.

Contraceptive development, including the development of IUDs, is discussed in light of the changing regulatory role of the FDA. The paper considers how the FDA and the government affect contraceptive development. Events that led to the demise of IUD use in the United States probably will have long-lasting effects on all future contraceptive development by the pharmaceutical industry in the United States.

Hospital incidence of hypospadias in dogs in North America.

A review of medical records from 17 North American university veterinary medical teaching hospitals identified 66 dogs with hypospadias. Males predominated (15:1) and cryptorchidism was the most commonly diagnosed second anomaly, often associated with intersexuality. Fifteen cases, diagnosed at 10 different university hospitals, were Boston terriers, strongly suggesting that this breed has a familial predisposition for hypospadias. Male mongrels, as a group, were seen in approximately the same proportion as their representation in the hospital population, suggesting other components in the aet

Toxic shock in the United States of America: epidemiology.

Toxic-shock syndrome (TSS), a severe multisystem febrile illness caused by S. aureus, occurs in a wide variety of clinical settings. Although the majority of reported cases in the United States continue to be associated with menstruation and tampon use, TSS also occurs in postpartum women and in patients with infected surgical wounds, cutaneous and subcutaneous infections, and infections at other body sites. Well documented cases of TSS have now been reported from countries around the world.

Histoplasmosis in Veterans Administration hospitals in middle America.

A series of clinical studies of histoplasmosis based on demonstrations of etiology led to descriptions of chronic pulmonary histoplasmosis, the principal type in adults, and amphotericin B as an effective therapy. A participant recreates the atmosphere of discovery during the contributions of a team comprising a mycologist, a surgeon and two physicians using cultures of excised lung and sputum to clearly identify cases of chronic pulmonary histoplasmosis. Subsequently cooperating physicians in several V.A. Hospitals carried out randomized studies of treatment, dosage, and side effects that est

Sexual surgery in late-nineteenth-century America.

This article describes how the tendency of post-Civil War medicine accorded with general social tendencies. Doctors' attitudes toward women reflected their anxiety about female emancipation and changing sex roles. The specialty of gynecology emerged in significant part as a reaction to female emancipation. The strong surgical emphasis in American gynecology practice has continued. The operations, clitoridectomy and female castration, were intended to reimpose the traditional sexual order (the term "castration" and "female circumcision" implied women had become men). The paper goes on to descri

Public health importance of rodents in South America.

Indigenous South American rodents are abundant, varied, and adaptable, and occupy most of the available natural habitats. Knowledge of their taxonomy and biology is generally superficial. Near human habitations the introduced Rattus and Mus are common and their contacts with man are often close. Cities in South America are expanding to keep pace with increases in the human population and hitherto virgin land is being settled or cleared for food production. Thus domestic rodents are brought into contact with indigenous species and the inevitable exchange of parasites may then produce unpredicta
