Does dietary intake of caffeine have an effect on transient global amnesia?

AIM: Amnesia is a cognitive disorder that may lead to memory loss. Caffeine is a psychoactive substance which have an effect on memory and cognitive functions. This study aimed to assess the association of transient global amnesia (TGA) with dietary intake of caffeine. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on the Sabzevar Persian cohort data of 258 patients with TGA and 520 healthy individuals in Sabzevar, Iran. The Nutritional data were gathered in face-to-face interviews using a valid Food Frequency Questionnaire. Different models of logistic regression were used to determine th

A rare case of aortic dissection presenting as pure transient global amnesia.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a well-described neurological phenomenon. Clinically, it manifests with the sudden onset of a paroxysmal, transient loss of anterograde memory and disorientation but with intact consciousness. Typically, symptoms last for only a few hours. We present an unusual case of aortic dissection presenting with pure TGA in a patient, who had a positive outcome. This is the second case report of a patient with aortic dissection presenting with pure TGA syndrome, but it is the first case in which the patient survived.

[Incompetence of internal jugular vein valve in patients with transient global amnesia].

BACKGROUND/AIM: Transient global amnesia (TGA) could be related to acute ischemic disturbances in mesial parts of temporal lobes, which are important for memory. Incompetence of internal jugular vein (IJV) valve with venous congestion causes venous microthrombosis of hippocampus. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of IJV valve incompetence, as well as other hemodynamic and structural properties of cerebral circulation in TGA patients. METHODS: IJV valve competence was investigated in 40 TGA patients and 30 persons of the control group (matched by age and sex), as well as d

Transient global amnesia with post-hyperventilation temporal sharp waves--a case report.

We report a 55-year-old woman, who presented with transient amnesia for 7h following underwater swimming. There was no evidence of neurological disturbance except global amnesia. Sharp waves in both temporal regions were registered during the initial EEG recording, which was accentuated by hyperventilation. Right hippocampal high signal intensity was observed in DWI performed 56 h after symptom onset. The sharp waves were all disappeared on follow-up EEG recordings.

Higher lesion detection by 3.0T MRI in patient with transient global amnesia.

PURPOSE: Transient global amnesia (TGA) patients were retrospectively reviewed to determine the usefulness of high-field strength MRI in detecting probable ischemic lesions in TGA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We investigated the lesion detection rate in patients with TGA using 1.5T and 3.0T MRI. Acute probable ischemic lesions were defined as regions of high-signal intensity in diffusion weighted image with corresponding low-signal intensity in apparent diffusion coefficient map. RESULTS: 3.0T MRI showed 11 out of 32 patients with probable ischemic lesions in the hippocampus with mean lesion size

Two attacks of transient global amnesia within a year: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Transient global amnesia is a classical disease. It presents with an abrupt onset of anterograde amnesia. It's incidence and recurrence rate is low. CASE PRESENTATION: In this case report a 54-year old white male is presented with two attacks of loss of memory within a year. CONCLUSION: Recurrent transient global amnesia is rare. Recognition and explaining the good nature of the symptoms to the patient and their families is an important task for the doctor.

Increased incidence of jugular valve insufficiency in patients with transient global amnesia.

OBJECTIVE: While transient global amnesia (TGA) is a clinically well defined disorder, its etiology is poorly understood. Cerebral venous hypertension and subsequent damage to hippocampal and diencephalic structures are among the discussed hypothetical causes. Using a direct method for the study of retrograde flow during a Valsalva maneuver, we determined whether jugular valve insufficiency contributes to cerebral venous hypertension in patients with TGA. METHODS: Jugular valve closure was assessed by duplex sonography in 20 patients with TGA and 20 age and gender matched controls. The diagno

Is transient global amnesia a risk factor for amnestic mild cognitive impairment?

Transient Global Amnesia (TGA) is a common condition of unknown aetiology characterised by the abrupt onset of severe anterograde amnesia, which lasts less than 24 hours. Some authors have suggested that subclinical impairment of memory functions may persist for much longer, but neuropsychological assessment lasting years after TGA attack has not been performed so far. The aim of this study was to evaluate longterm cognitive functions in patients with a previous TGA episode. Fifty-five patients underwent a standardised neuropsychological assessment after at least one-year from the TGA attack,

Transient Global Amnesia. Evidence against vascular ischemic etiology from diffusion weighted imaging.

The etiology of Transient Global Amnesia (TGA) is still obscure. Diffusion-Weighted-Imaging (DWI) provides conflicting evidence concerning a possible vascular ischemic cause in mesiotemporal structures including the hippocampal region. The question remains open whether conflicting observations resulted from different observation times. DWI was performed at a time interval with known sensitivity for detection of ischemia. Ten patients (5 male, 5 female; mean age of 63 +/- 9, range 41-71 years) with typical TGA were investigated at an average delay of 18 hours (range 6 to 44 hours) between onset

Resting and acetazolamide-challenged technetium-99m-ECD SPECT in transient global amnesia.

Regional resting cerebral blood flow and vascular reserve in a patient with transient global amnesia (TGA) were evaluated during and after a TGA episode using 99mTc-ethyl cysteinate dimer (ECD). The patient had consecutive SPECT studies before and after acetazolamide (ACZ) administration with adjunctive radionuclide angiography using equal-volume-split 99mTc-ECD. SPECT study during TGA episode showed poor vasodilatory reactivity to ACZ in the left medial temporal region involving the hippocampus and resting hypoperfusion in the regions bilaterally. The resting hypoperfusion with reserved vasod

Transient global amnesia and dural arteriovenous fistula of the anterior cranial fossa.

Dural arteriovenous fistula (AVF) of the anterior cranial fossa is associated usually with cerebral hemorrhage or subarachnoid hemorrhage, while an association with transient global amnesia has not been reported previously. A case presenting the latter unusual symptom is described and the surgical treatment of AVF is discussed. A 64-year-old woman was hospitalized complaining of transient memory impairment. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging demonstrated a flow void in the left frontal lobe and temporal pole. Cerebral angiography revealed an AVF in the anterior cranial fossa, which was fed bilate

Leao's spreading depression in the hippocampus explains transient global amnesia. A hypothesis.

Transient global amnesia has been explained by epileptic mechanisms or transient ischemic attacks affecting the hippocampus. None of these two mechanisms appear likely. The animal experimental phenomenon entitled spreading depression of cortical electrical activity (SD) or spreading depression of Leao has been implicated in migraine pathogenesis and may be relevant to transient global amnesia. In experimental animals, SD in the hippocampus causes a temporary functional ablation lasting minutes to hours with full functional recovery. Glutamate, which is present in large amounts in the hippocamp

Neuropsychological findings during a transient global amnesia attack and its follow-up.

An extensive neuropsychological study was made during an attack of transient global amnesia and during four follow-up. The neuropsychological findings are compared to those of previous reports. Transient global amnesia appears to be a relatively benign syndrome but it leaves some "fragility" of memory, detected by complex neuropsychological tasks.
