[Rethinking criminal responsibility: practical application of operational diagnosis and gnostic into expert testimony].

There had been argument concerning the difference between the agnostic approach and the gnostic approach to the psychiatric perspective of criminal responsibility until the landmark ruling by the 3rd court of the Japanese Supreme Court in 1984. The decision upheld the gnostic approach and affirmed that the defendant's criminal responsibility should be based on such factors as psychopathology, motive, modus operandi, situation surrounding the crime, and pre-morbid personality, as long as the offense was not directly motivated by the delusion or hallucination. The gnostic explanation includes so

GIT1 regulates synaptic structural plasticity underlying learning.

The signaling scaffold protein GIT1 is expressed widely throughout the brain, but its function in vivo remains elusive. Mice lacking GIT1 have been proposed as a model for attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, due to alterations in basal locomotor activity as well as paradoxical locomotor suppression by the psychostimulant amphetamine. Since we had previously shown that GIT1-knockout mice have normal locomotor activity, here we examined GIT1-deficient mice for ADHD-like behavior in more detail, and find neither hyperactivity nor amphetamine-induced locomotor suppression. Instead, GIT1-defi

Differences in Mental Health, Risk Behaviors, and Social Determinants Among Anabolic-Androgenic Steroid Consumers With and Without Co-occurring Methamphetamine Use in Australia.

Objective: People who use anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) frequently engage in polypharmacy, with evidence highlighting recurrent co-use with amphetamine-like stimulants. While the independent risks of each substance are established, little is known about their combined impact in treatment-engaged populations. This study compared people who co-use AAS with methamphetamine (AAS-M) and without (AAS-non-meth [AAS-NM]) across mental health, risk behaviors, and social determinants. Methods: Intake data were drawn from Lives Lived Well (LLW), a large Australian non-government alcohol and other dr

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for stimulant use disorders (STIMULUS): protocol for a multi-site, double-blind, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Cocaine and methamphetamine use disorders (CcUD/MtUD) have serious public health, medical, and psychiatric consequences. Yet, there are no U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved treatments available. The STIMULUS study is a multi-site trial, sponsored by the National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network (CTN), that aims to investigate the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) as a potential treatment for moderate to severe CcUD/MtUD. METHODS: The study is a double-blind, sham-controlled trial seeking to recrui

Morphological Brain Alterations and Network Disorganizations in Individuals With Substance Use Disorders: Differential Effects of Heroin Versus Methamphetamine.

BACKGROUND: Heroin and methamphetamine are two widely abused drugs that have profound effects on brain morphology and functioning. This study aims to (1) identify brain structural differences between heroin and methamphetamine users; (2) examine how these drugs differentially affect the topology and functional connectivity of key brain networks; and (3) characterize associations between morphological alterations and clinical symptoms, including anxiety and depression. METHODS: In this study, we collected T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging data from 26 heroin-abstinent (HA) patients, 24 me

Comparison of Treatment Receipt and Hospitalization Among Patients With Stimulant Use Disorder and/or Opioid Use Disorder in the Veterans Health Administration.

OBJECTIVES: Stimulant use is a growing problem, but little is known about service utilization among patients with stimulant use disorder (StUD). In the context of the overdose crisis, much research has focused on patients with opioid use disorder (OUD). It is unclear how the characteristics, treatment receipt, and hospitalization of patients with StUD differ from patients with OUD. METHODS: Electronic health record data were extracted for national Veterans Health Administration patients with a visit from March 1, 2020, to February 28, 2021 with StUD and/or OUD (N = 132,273). We compared patie

A nationally representative analysis of "twin epidemics": Rising rates of methamphetamine use among persons who use opioids.

BACKGROUND: Recent data suggest increases in methamphetamine potency, affordability, and availability in the US. Other data indicate rising rates of methamphetamine use among patients seeking treatment for opioid use disorder. The extent to which similar increases in methamphetamine use have occurred for populations outside of a treatment context and for those reporting other substance use is unknown. PURPOSE: The current analysis used a nationally representative data source to evaluate recent trends in past month methamphetamine use based on opioid use history. METHODS: Data from the 2015-2

Reasons for stimulant use among Latino gay men in San Francisco: a comparison between methamphetamine and cocaine users.

The literature on drug-using gay men has documented a strong relationship between methamphetamine (MA) use and high-risk sexual practices. Of particular concern is that MA use is associated with powerful sexual effects that may facilitate the transmission of HIV. As a group, Latino gay men show high risk for HIV infection, and such risk has been related to episodes of sex under the influence of drugs. However, little information exists about stimulant use among Latino gay men, and it is not known whether MA use in this population is similarly motivated by sexual effects. This study reports rea

Epidemiology and public health Consequences of methamphetamine use in California's Central Valley.

Methamphetamine use is an increasingly serious public health problem in California and other parts of the country. Despite sensationalistic media attention, however, very little is known about users of this clandestinely consumed drug. Employing methods known as Rapid Assessment and Response, the authors describe the epidemiology and public health implications of methamphetamine use in California's Central Valley, with a focus on Sacramento, which many social indicators suggest has been more severely affected by methamphetamine than any city in the nation. Data sources for this report include

Ego development, dragon fights, and chronic drug abusers.

Developmental antecedents of adult behavior are described for four matched groups of chronic drug users (cocaine, amphetamine, opiates, barbiturates, and sedative-hypnotics) and a comparable group of nonusers, each group having been studied intensively for approximately 1.5 years. Integration is provided by a theory that views psychological development as a series of ego transformations, which appear metaphorically in legend and mythology as dragon fights. Each group is characterized theoretically by a core conflict, an upper limit on individuation, and a typical character. Results imply that

Distinct EEG cue-reactivity profiles associated with virtual-reality treatment responses in methamphetamine use disorder.

Methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) is associated with abnormal neural cue-reactivity dynamics that contribute to craving and relapse vulnerability. Using electroencephalography (EEG), virtual reality (VR)-based cue exposure, and VR intervention, we examined Cue-Rest spectral modulation across addiction-related neural systems before and after treatment. Principal Component Analysis(PCA)-based subgrouping method identified two distinct EEG cue-reactivity profiles characterized by relatively higher versus lower Cue-Rest spectral modulation patterns. During VR-cue exposure, widespread abnormalitie

Atypical contributions of reward decisions to momentary mood in individuals with methamphetamine use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) are often accompanied by severe mood dysregulation, leading to more frequent irrational decisions such as drug-seeking behavior. Existing research indicates that the impairment of the reward system is central to the development of addiction. However, it remains unclear how the abnormal reward processing affects the mood regulation abilities of individuals with MUD. In this study, we explored the cognitive and computational mechanisms through which the subjective mood of individuals with MUD is influenced by reward information duri

Trends in methamphetamine use, markets and harms in Australia, 2003-2019.

INTRODUCTION: To describe trends in methamphetamine use, markets and harms in Australia from 2003 to 2019. METHODS: Data comprised patterns of use and price from sentinel samples of people who inject drugs and who use MDMA/other illicit stimulants and population-level amphetamine-related police seizures, arrests, hospitalisations, treatment episodes and deaths from approximately 2003 to 2019. Bayesian autoregressive time-series models were analysed for: no change; constant rate of change; and change over time differing in rate after one to three changepoints. Related indicators were analysed

Difference in topological organization of white matter structural connectome between methamphetamine and heroin use disorder.

The psychological symptoms caused by heroin and methamphetamine are significantly different in people with substance use disorders. The topological organization of structural connections that may underlie these differences remains unknown. The study sample consisted of 23 males with methamphetamine use disorder (MAUD), 20 males with heroin use disorder (HUD), and 21 male healthy controls (HCs) who were demographically matched. Diffusion tensor imaging and probabilistic tractography were used for white matter network construction. Psychological symptoms were evaluated by the Symptom Checklist-9

Amphetamine maintenance therapy during intermittent cocaine self-administration in rats attenuates psychomotor and dopamine sensitization and reduces addiction-like behavior.

D-amphetamine maintenance therapy shows promise as a treatment for people with cocaine addiction. Preclinical studies using Long Access (LgA) cocaine self-administration procedures suggest D-amphetamine may act by preventing tolerance to cocaine's effects at the dopamine transporter (DAT). However, Intermittent Access (IntA) cocaine self-administration better reflects human patterns of use, is especially effective in promoting addiction-relevant behaviors, and instead of tolerance, produces psychomotor, incentive, and neural sensitization. We asked, therefore, how D-amphetamine maintenance dur

A qualitative exploration of the factors associated with initiation to methamphetamine use in Iran.

BACKGROUND: Crystal (methamphetamine) is a strong stimulant of addictive substances that affects the central nervous system. The consumption of this substance is increasing among teenagers and adult young people in the country. In this matter, one of the practical and important ways to its control is to identify the factors leading to its first use. Thus this paper, explores the factors related to the first crystal use in Golestan province, Iran. METHODS: In a qualitative study, 19 crystal users were recruited in the study conducted in Golestan province by snowball sampling from DIC (Drop-In
