Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) is a multisystem genetic disease characterized by cutaneous and extracutaneous hamartomas. The diagnosis is based on the association of major and minor criteria, defined by a consensus conference updated in 2012. The clinical examination of the skin is crucial because seven diagnostic criteria are dermatological: four major (hypomelanotic macules, angiofibroma or fibrous cephalic plaques, ungual fibromas, shagreen patches) and three minor criteria (confetti skin lesions, dental enamel pits, intraoral fibromas). Skin biopsy is commonly performed to assert the di…

Tuberous sclerosis is characterized by a classic triad: seizures, mental retardation, and cutaneous angiofibromas; this triad occurs in about 30% of cases.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an inherited multisystem disorder; it may involve kidney, brain, skin, lungs, and liver. We report a 37-year-old female TSC patient presenting with skin lesions (angiofibromas, molluscum pendulum). Radiologic examination revealed additional brain and renal lesions consisting of tumors, cysts, and angiomyolipomas. Treatment with rapamycin disclosed improvement in skin lesions. The number and volume of angiofibromas and molluscum pendulum reduced progressively in 6 months. During the ninth month of treatment, magnetic resonance imaging was repeated for renal a…

Antrochoanal polyps rarely present with severe epistaxis. We present the case of a young male patient who presented in such a manner, thus leading to the suspicion of an angiofibroma as the underlying pathology. The radiological investigations, treatment and pathological features are discussed.

INTRODUCTION: Fibrous cephalic plaques (FCP) are a characteristic manifestation of tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) and occur in one third o … nical records document the plaque at different ages. The FCP naturally resolved at 74 years. Facial angiofibromas also faded with time in the last decade. His epilepsy and renal abnormalities remained under control with careful surveillance and monitoring.
DISCUSSION: Natural aging in the eighth decade causes progressive laxity of collagen and leads to natura …

BACKGROUND: Oral mechanistic target of rapamycin inhibitors have been shown to reduce visceral tumor volume in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC).
OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate the cutaneous response to oral sirolimus in patients with TSC and an indication for systemic treatment, including long-term effects.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 14 adult patients with TSC prescribed sirolimus to treat lymphangioleiomyomatosis was performed. Serial photographs of angiofibromas, shagreen patches, and ungual fibromas taken before, during, and after the treatment period were blinde…

We describe the first case of isolated nasopharyngeal Castleman's disease mimicking juvenile angiofibroma. Castleman's disease may appear as a local or generalized tumor-like condition, usually in the chest or abdomen, and may involve both the lymph nodes and non-nodal tissues. Since the nasopharyngeal roof is the residence of the pharyngeal tonsils (adenoids) which are rich in lymphoid tissues, such an appearance is predictable. It is emphasized that careful interpretation of radiographs may help to distinguish Castleman's disease from other tumor conditions, such as lymphoma, neurogenic tumo…

Multiple angiofibromas are commonly found in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex. We report a rare presentation of multiple congenital fibrous papules occurring only on the lips with no syndromic associations.

A 23-year-old man presented for evaluation of multiple dense asymptomatic papules on the entire glans. Histologically, the lesions resembled acral angiofibroma. A diagnosis of profound pearly penile papules was made. This is the third reported case and more serious and typical than described in previous reports.

Tuberous sclerosis (Bourneville-Pringle's disease) is a rare, largely autosomal dominant neurocutaneous disease. The disease can also result from spontaneous mutations. Although strongly variable in its manifestation, manifestations are typically characterized by involvement of the central nervous system (early childhood seizures), skin (facial angiofibromas) and kidneys (angiomyolipomas). In the case described, a 67-year-old female patient complained exclusively of obstructed nasal breathing that was found to be due to angiofibromas in the nasal vestibule. Oral fibromas were asymptomatic, whi…

BACKGROUND: Solitary sclerotic fibroma (SF) presents as a well circumscribed dermal nodule, composed of sparse spindle cells with alternating wavy collagen fibers arranged in a storiform pattern. The histogenesis and nature of this histologically distinct lesion are uncertain. Whether this peculiar tumor represents a true hamartoma or a degenerating end of various fibrous lesions such as pleomorphic fibroma (PF), dermatofibroma, or angiofibroma is still controversial. High proliferating index of spindle cells in SF argues against the possibility of being a degenerating end product of another l…

The role of radiotherapy is discussed relative to the management of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma, glomus tumors of the middle ear region, ameloblastoma, extramedullary plasmacytoma of the head and neck, and soft tissue and bone sarcoma. Moderate doses of carefully applied irradiation are effective and can be safely utilized for these conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant inherited phakomatosis, usually diagnosed in childhood and characterized by cutaneous and neurological tumors, the latter often leading to epilepsy and mental retardation.
EXEGESIS: We report a case of TSC diagnosed in a 33-year-old man, without any known family history of phakomatosis, presenting with facial angiofibromas, hypomelanotic macules, a giant-cell astrocytoma and retinal phakomas without any mental impairment or epilepsy.
CONCLUSION: TSC may occur in patients who do not have any family history of phakomatosis…

The current WHO classification system for tumors of the head and neck has made few changes from the previous edition with regards to tumors of the nasopharynx. The classification system is discussed here with particular attention to nasopharyngeal carcinoma, nasopharyngeal papillary adenocarcinoma, salivary gland anlage tumor, hairy polyp, juvenile angiofibroma, and other tumors.

A 4.5-cm elastic, non-dolent mass in the left spermatic cord was diagnosed in a 57-year-old man and totally excised by a scrotal access. Histologically a cellular angiofibroma was diagnosed. These benign tumours are very rare. In women the most common sites are the vulvovaginal, in men the inguinoscrotal region.

A 35-year-old man presented with dilated cardiomyopathy, an unusual association with tuberous sclerosis. Clinical history and examination were consistent with tuberous sclerosis including major features of tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) like facial angiofibroma, shagreen patch, subependymal nodules, and angiomyolipoma of kidney. The clinical manifestations, pathogenesis and evaluation of tuberous sclerosis are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant neurocutaneous disorder. Despite established genetic causes, missed or late diagnosis remains common in familial cases. This study reports a familial case of TSC to highlight the diagnostic challenges and evaluate the clinical efficacy of everolimus in managing cutaneous and neurologic symptoms.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient presented with refractory seizures, facial angiofibromas, and intellectual disability. Sequencing analysis revealed a mutation in the TSC2 gene in both the patient and the mother: c.848 + 281 (IVS9) C …
