TBX22 mutations are a frequent cause of non-syndromic cleft palate in the Thai population.

Mutations in the TBX22 gene underlie an X-linked malformation syndrome with cleft palate (CP) and ankyloglossia. Its mutations also result in non-syndromic CP in some populations. To investigate whether mutations in TBX22 play a part in the formation of non-syndromic CP in the Thai population, we performed mutation analysis covering all the coding regions of the TBX22 gene in 53 unrelated Thai patients with non-syndromic CP. We identified four potentially pathogenic mutations, 359G-->A (R120Q), 452G-->T (R151L), 1166C-->A (P389Q), and 1252delG in four different patients. All mutations were not…

Prevalence and distribution of oral lesions: a cross-sectional study in Turkey.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and distribution of oral lesions (OLs) in Turkish population. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 765 residents (F/M: 375/390) were selected by the cluster sampling method and examined according to WHO criteria. RESULTS: Excessive melanin pigmentation (6.9%) was the most common lesion in the study population. The tongue lesions observed in this study were as follows: fissured tongue (5.2%), varices (4.1%), hairy tongue (3.8%), geographic tongue (1.0%), atrophic tongue papillae (0.7%) and ankyloglossia (0.3%…

Trends in maxillary frenulum pathology and treatment from 2009 to 2023.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the rates of lip tie (LT) diagnosis and maxillary frenotomy (MF) in the US. METHODS: Using TriNetX, queries targeted pediatric patients with a LT diagnosis (ICD-10: Q38.0) or MF (CPT: 40806). Frequency and rate of LT and MF were collected between 2009 and 2023. Frequencies were collected for those with potential health hazards related to socioeconomic circumstances (ICD Z55-65), or low socioeconomic status (LSES). Demographics were collected and rates were stratified by age. RESULTS: 13,340 patients were diagnosed with LT and 3771 had MF during the study period. The r

Management of Severe Riga-Fede Disease in a Child With MIRAGE Syndrome.

Riga-Fede disease (RFD) is a rare condition in infants and young children caused by repetitive trauma to the oral mucosa, often from newly e … pproximation of the muscular defect with absorbable sutures, and a lingual frenuloplasty to address ankyloglossia. Pediatric dentistry completed the extraction of the four mandibular incisors to eliminate the source of trauma. This case illustrates the importance of early recognition and definitive treatment of RFD to prevent progression to more complex soft ti …

Labial Frenotomy for Symptomatic Isolated Upper Lip Tie.

BACKGROUND: The benefits and challenges of successful breastfeeding for both mother and child have been well-established in the literature. While ankyloglossia, or tongue tie, alone or in combination with upper lip tie has been the focus of several previous studies, very few have directly addressed isolated symptomatic upper lip tie and the role of surgical correction for breastfeeding difficulties. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven infants with isolated upper lip tie and breastfeeding difficulty were taken to the operating room for labial frenotomy. These infants were assessed at their follow-up …

A comprehensive newborn exam: part I. General, head and neck, cardiopulmonary.

A comprehensive newborn examination involves a systematic inspection. A Ballard score uses physical and neurologic characteristics to assess … pits or cup ears, if they are accompanied by other malformations or significant family history. If ankyloglossia is detected, a frenotomy may be considered if it impacts breastfeeding. The neck should be examined for full range of motion because uncorrected torticollis can lead to plagiocephaly and ear misalignment. Proper auscultation is crucial for evaluatio …

A comparison between an early- and a late frenulotomy for neonates with problematic tongue-tie.

PURPOSE: To compare breastfeeding outcomes between early and late frenulotomy in infants with problematic tongue-tie to determine optimal intervention timing. METHODS: Conducted over two years at Thammasat University Hospital, this prospective cohort study divided mother-infant pairs into an early group (n = 103; <72 h postpartum) and a late group (n = 123; 7-14 days postpartum). Primary outcomes focused on exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) success at three months of age, while secondary outcomes measured LATCH scores improvement, pain reduction, and weight regain. RESULTS: Both groups showed si

Normal variations of oral anatomy and common oral soft tissue lesions: evaluation and management.

Examination of the oral cavity can provide significant diagnostic information regarding the general health of the patient. The oral cavity is affected by a multitude of pathologic conditions of variable cause and significance; however, there are numerous normal variations of oral soft tissue structures that may resemble a pathologic state. Understanding these variations assists practitioners to discriminate between normal versus abnormal findings and determine the appropriate course of management, if necessary.

The congenital myasthenic syndromes (CMS) are a heterogeneous group of disorders caused by perturbations in signal transduction at the neuro … r development. One brother had speech delay, likely due to a combination of tracheostomy status and ankyloglossia. This case report suggests that CMS should be on the differential diagnosis for familial recurrence of VCP.

Comparison of the Effects of High-Power Diode Laser and Electrocautery for Lingual Frenectomy in Infants: A Blinded Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the release of the lingual frenulum through frenectomy in newborns zero to 90 days of age who breastfed and had diagnosis of ankyloglossia with an indication for surgery, comparing two methods: electrocautery and a high-power diode laser. Fifty-seven patients were randomly allocated to two groups (23 submitted to electrocautery and 34 submitted to a high power diode laser). Tongue movements were evaluated based on a clinical assessment and using the Bristol Tongue Assessment Tool (BTAT) before and 15 days after the surgical procedures. The visual analog sca…

Lingual frenectomy: a comparison between the conventional surgical and laser procedure.

AIM: Ankyloglossia, commonly known as tongue-tie, is a congenital oral anomaly characterized by a short lingual frenulum that may contribute to feeding, speech and mechanical problems. The purpose of this study is to compare the advantages of laser vis-à-vis conventional frenectomy in both intra- and post-surgical phases. METHODS: This study took into consideration two patients, who were respectively 9 and 10-year-old. The first one underwent a common surgical procedure. A Nd:Yap laser device with a micropulsed wavelength of 1340 nm and power of 8 watts was used for the second. The postsurgic…
