BACKGROUND: The role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in malignant and non-malignant genital diseases in women is well known and the corresponding epidemiological burden has been widely described. However, less is known about the role of HPV in anal, penile and head and neck cancer, and the burden of malignant and non-malignant HPV-related diseases in men. The objective of this review is to estimate the epidemiological burden of HPV-related cancers and non-malignant diseases in men in Europe.
METHODS: The annual number of new HPV-related cancers in men in Europe was estimated using Eurostat popu

Malignancies of the anogenital region have similar etiology, including viral infections, sexual habits, social and educational factors. Condylomata acuminata represent precancerous lesions. In the available literature, we found no cases of synchronous cancers of anus and penis reported. We report a case of synchronous cancer of the penile foreskin and cancer of the anus in a 36 year-old man. The microscopic diagnosis of the anal lesion was squamous cell cancer, basaloid type. The penile lesion was squamous cell cancer, keratinizing type. Both cancers presented with the in situ component. Immun

High-resolution pelvic MR imaging is central to the diagnosis, staging, treatment planning, and posttreatment assessment of anal squamous cell carcinoma (SCCA), the most common malignancy of the anal canal. Accurate imaging interpretation requires detailed knowledge of anal canal anatomy, lymphatic drainage, and optimized MR imaging technique. MR imaging provides excellent evaluation of primary tumor extent, while nodal and distant staging are enhanced by computed tomography (CT) and FDG-PET/CT. Imaging directly informs contemporary chemoradiation strategies and surveillance. Human papillomavi

Phyllodes tumors are fibroepithelial neoplasms most commonly found in the breast, and their occurrence in the anogenital region-especially in male patients-is exceedingly rare. We describe a man who presented with a localized mass in the anal region. The lesion was excised, and gross examination revealed the characteristic leaf-like clefts typical of phyllodes tumors. Histopathological analysis demonstrated a biphasic morphology, composed of epithelial and stromal components. Immunohistochemical staining showed positivity for estrogen receptor, GATA3, and mammaglobin in the epithelial componen

BACKGROUND: Anal canal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a relatively uncommon neoplasia, and it is mostly a local-regional cancer, of low metastatic potential (only 15%), resulting in cure in most cases treated with definitive chemoradiation. On the other hand, its incidence has been steadily increasing over the last decades, which makes it an important public health problem. In an effort to provide surgeons and oncologists who treat patients with anal cancer with the most updated information based on the best scientific evidence, the Brazilian Society of Surgical Oncology (SBCO) has produced

Anal cancer treatment response assessment can be challenging with both magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and clinical evaluation considered essential. MRI, in particular, has shown to be useful for the assessment of treatment response, the detection of recurrent disease in follow up and surveillance, and the evaluation of possible post-treatment complications as well as complications from the tumor itself. In this review, we focus on the role of imaging, mainly MRI, in anal cancer treatment response assessment. We also describe the treatment complications that can occur, and the imaging finding

INTRODUCTION: In the United States, the effectiveness of anal cancer screening programs has been limited by a lack of trained professionals proficient in high-resolution anoscopy (HRA) and a high patient lost-to-follow-up rate between diagnosis and treatment. Simplifying anal intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 or more severe (AIN 2+) detection could radically improve the access and efficiency of anal cancer prevention. Novel optical imaging providing point-of-care diagnoses could substantially improve existing HRA and histology-based diagnosis. This work aims to demonstrate the potential of hig

We report a case of anal canal cancer with Pagetoid spread without a macroscopic skin lesion. A 54-year-old man was admitted to a hospital with complaints of bloody stools. Endoscopic examination revealed a polyp in the anal canal, and endoscopic mucosal resection was performed. Pathological examination revealed an adenocarcinoma accompanied by Pagetoid spread and the positive surgical margin. We additionally performed trans-anal resection twice, but the resected horizontal margin was positive. Mapping biopsy of rectal mucosa and perianal skin revealed adenocarcinoma in only rectal mucosa. BACKGROUND: Patients with T2N0 squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal (SCCA) have comprised less than 30% of patients enrolled in phase III clinical trials of curative-intent definitive chemoradiation. We aimed to evaluate treatment outcomes of these patients according to dose-intensity of chemoradiation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective multicenter study of patients with T2N0 SCCA, with the primary endpoint to compare the progression-free survival (PFS) of patients treated with full definitive chemoradiotherapy (f-CRT, CRT with 2 drugs) versus a nonstandard treatment (NST; radiotherap

Anal Squamous Cell Carcinoma (ASCC) is an uncommon cancer with a recognised precursor Anal Intraepithelial Neoplasia (AIN). Although there are consistent evidence-based guidelines for the management of ASCC, historically this has not been the case for AIN and as a result there have been geographical variations in the recommendations for the treatment of AIN. More recently there have been updates in the literature to the recommendations for the management of AIN. To assess whether we are now closer to achieving an international consensus, we have completed a systematic scoping review of availab

A 71-year-old man presented with a painful swelling of the tip of his little finger. Infection was considered, but antibiotics and incision did not give relief. Biopsy showed metastasis of anal carcinoma, for which he had been treated 7 years earlier with curative chemoradiotherapy. He underwent amputation of the finger.

Anal squamous cell carcinoma is the most common type of anal cancer and is largely associated with anal human papillomavirus infection. The incidence of anal squamous cell carcinoma is increasing, and although still uncommon in the general population, a high incidence has been noted in specific population groups (eg, patients with HIV, men who have sex with men [MSM], recipients of solid organ transplants, women with genital neoplasia, and patients with systemic lupus erythematosus or inflammatory bowel disease). The higher incidence among individuals who are HIV-positive makes anal squamous c
