Anxiety severity moderates the relation between pineal parenchymal volume and objective sleep problems in peri-adolescent youth.

Sleep problems are common in anxiety especially around the onset of adolescence ("peri-adolescence") when symptoms escalate and sleep changes. The pineal gland is a compelling target given its role in sleep behavior and associations with multiple disorders that report problems with sleep. We investigated pineal gland volume and anxiety severity in relation to objective measures of sleep derived from polysomnography in a group of peri-adolescents. Youth (N = 200; 10-13 years) were sampled across a continuum of anxiety severity, with special emphasis on social, generalized, and separation anxiet

Behavioral symptoms and sleep problems in children with anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders are frequently associated with childhood behavioral problems and mental illnesses such as anxiety disorder. To identify promising behavioral targets for pediatric anxiety disorder therapy, we investigated the associations between specific sleep and behavioral problems. METHODS: We conducted retrospective reviews of 105 patients aged 4-12 years who met the DSM-IV criteria for primary diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (n = 33), separation anxiety disorder (n = 23), social phobia (n = 21), or obsessive compulsive disorder (n = 28). Sleep problems were evaluate

Different measures of impulsivity in patients with anxiety disorders: a case control study.

The relationship between anxiety and impulsivity is controversial and not well explored. The present investigation aims to compare impulsivity, measured by different rating tools, in patients with anxiety disorders vs. healthy controls. Forty-seven subjects with different anxiety disorders and 45 matched controls underwent diagnostic and symptomatological evaluations by the Mini Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I) Plus 5.0, Bech-Raphaelsen Depression and Mania Scale (BRDMS), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Hypomania Check List (HCL-32) and the Clinical Global Impression (CGI); temperame

Maternal separation modifies behavioural and neuroendocrine responses to stress in CCR7 deficient mice.

Alterations in immune function of various humoral and cellular factors, including chemokines, secondary to early stress may play a role in the enhanced vulnerability to psychiatric conditions in those with a history of childhood adversity. C57BL/6 (WT) mice and mice deficient for the chemokine receptor type 7 (CCR7(-/-)) were used to determine the effects of maternal separation on a range of behaviours and the biological stress response. Unpredictable maternal separation (MS) was conducted for 3h daily from postnatal day 1 to 14, with subsequent behavioural testing at 10 weeks of age. Corticos

Fluoxetine enhances cell proliferation and prevents apoptosis in dentate gyrus of maternally separated rats.

The mother-infant relationship is an instinctive phenomenon, and loss of maternal care in early life influences neonatal development, behavior and physiologic responses.(1,2) Furthermore, the early loss may affect the vulnerability of the infant to neuropsychiatric disorders, such as childhood anxiety disorders, personality disorders and depression, over its lifespan.(3,4) Fluoxetine is prescribed worldwide for depression and is often used in the treatment of childhood mental problems related to maternal separation or loss of maternal care.(5,6) In the present study, fluoxetine was administrat

Effective doses of esketamine oral or esketamine intranasal for the prevention of preoperative anxiety in pediatric patients: A randomized double-blind dose-finding trial.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative anxiety is a prevalent concern among preschool pediatric patients. Esketamine, an S-enantiomer of ketamine, has emerged as a potential option for pediatric premedication. This study aimed to determine the 95% effective dose (ED95) of oral or intranasal esketamine for alleviating preoperative anxiety in this age group. METHODS: Children patients aged between 1 to 6 years old who were undergoing elective surgery under general anesthesia were recruited in the study. The initial patient received a single dose of esketamine orally (2.5 mg/kg) or intranasally (1 mg/kg), whi

Clinical characteristics of anxiety disordered youth.

Reports the characteristics of a large, representative sample of treatment-seeking anxious youth (N=488). Participants, aged 7-17 years (mean 10.7 years), had a principal DSM-IV diagnosis of separation anxiety disorder (SAD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), or social phobia (SP). Although youth with a co-primary diagnosis for which a different disorder-specific treatment would be indicated (e.g., major depressive disorder, substance abuse) were not included, there were few other exclusion criteria. Participants and their parent/guardian underwent an extensive baseline assessment using a br

Social Phobia Is Associated with Delayed Onset of Chickenpox, Measles, and Mumps Infections.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence showing that infectious diseases in childhood play an important role in the etiopathogenesis of neurodevelopmental and other mental disorders is growing. The aim of this study was to explore the timing of common childhood diseases in early-onset anxiety disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed data from PsyCoLaus, a large Swiss Population Cohort Study (N = 3720). In this study, we regressed overanxious disorder, separation anxiety disorder, social phobia, and specific phobias on the age of onset of several childhood diseases, always adjusting for the other anxiety dis

The descriptive epidemiology of commonly occurring mental disorders in the United States.

Data are reviewed on the descriptive epidemiology of commonly occurring DSM-IV mental disorders in the United States. These disorders are highly prevalent: Roughly half the population meets criteria for one or more such disorders in their lifetimes, and roughly one fourth of the population meets criteria in any given year. Most people with a history of mental disorder had first onsets in childhood or adolescence. Later onsets typically involve comorbid disorders. Some anxiety disorders (phobias, separation anxiety disorder) and impulse-control disorders have the earliest age of onset distribut

Air Force mental health consultation: a six-year retention follow-up.

Follow-up data were collected 68 months after Air Force basic trainees were screened at a mental hygiene clinic. Trainees were given the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) inventory and a clinical interview-recommended disposition. This process resulted in recommendations of immediate discharge for 65 trainees, administrative separation for 52, and return to duty for 48. None of the immediate discharge group served 4 years or more, only 5 of the administrative separation group did so, and 18 of the return to duty group did so. The passive-aggressive, anxiety, and dysthymia scales from

Characterization of the mental health of immigrant children separated from their mothers at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Immigrant children who faced forced separation from their parents may be at heightened risk of developing mental health disorders, including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety disorders. This cross-sectional study assessed the mental health of children being held in U.S. immigration detention who had been previously separated from their mothers. We interviewed 73 mothers about their eldest child age 5-17 using the Parent-Report version of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Among these children, many had elevated scores for emotional problems (49%),

PET imaging on neurofunctional changes after optogenetic stimulation in a rat model of panic disorder.

Panic disorder (PD) is an acute paroxysmal anxiety disorder with poorly understood pathophysiology. The dorsal periaqueductal gray (dPAG) is involved in the genesis of PD. However, the downstream neurofunctional changes of the dPAG during panic attacks have yet to be evaluated in vivo. In this study, optogenetic stimulation to the dPAG was performed to induce panic-like behaviors, and in vivo positron emission tomography (PET) imaging with 18F-flurodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) was conducted to evaluate neurofunctional changes before and after the optogenetic stimulation. Compared with the baseline,

Behavioral treatment of night terrors in a child with acute leukemia.

A 3-year-old girl diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia presented with a 1-month history of recurrent nightmares. Symptoms of the disturbance conformed to a clinical picture of slow wave arousal night terrors, or pavor nocturnus. Behavioral treatment aimed at reducing anxiety related to maternal separation and medical procedures, and at reinforcing appropriate sleep patterns was effective in reducing and eventually eliminating the symptoms. Follow-up revealed no return of nightmares or existence of new problems. A brief review of descriptive, etiological and treatment aspects of night terr

Management of co-morbid anxiety and alcohol disorders: parallel treatment of disorders.

Co-morbid alcohol-related disorders and anxiety disorders have been found to occur in alcohol treatment populations, anxiety treatment populations and the general community. People suffering from co-occurring alcohol-related and anxiety disorders are more prone to relapse to alcohol abuse, and more likely to re-enter the treatment system for either disorder than sufferers of either disorder without a co-morbid disorder. To review the current state of the management of this disorder, evidence of the prevalence of this co-morbid condition in clinical and community populations is examined, then t
