INTRODUCTION: Quantifying the impacts of armed conflict on civilians and infrastructure remains a major challenge, particularly where reporting is limited. Most conflict measurement tools require affected populations to report events and are limited by short time series, under-reporting, and varying methods. These tools do not capture infrastructural rebuilding, which has important health implications. Given this, we demonstrate the utility of nighttime lights (NTL) as a complementary tool for measuring conflict dynamics and infrastructure recovery with an epidemiological application.

Topical corticosteroids are frequently used in the treatment of irritant contact dermatitis (ICD). The efficacy of this treatment has, however, not been thoroughly established, and experimental studies on the topic have provided conflicting results. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of potent topical corticosteroids on experimentally-induced irritant skin reactions in a double-blind, vehicle-controlled study. 16 healthy volunteers had sodium lauryl sulfate patch tests symmetrically applied to the upper arms. After removal of patch tests, a potent topical corticosteroid (b

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic disorder characterised by chronic widespread pain, fatigue and sleep disturbances with higher prevalence in females. Psychological factors contribute largely to FM. Although women war refugees represent a fragile population that is prone to psychological distress, FM was not studied in this population.
OBJECTIVE: The current study had three objectives: (1) to screen FM and insomnia prevalence and severity, (2) to study the correlation between FM severity and insomnia and (3) to study FM treatment trends and their concordance with the guidelines among

OBJECTIVES: In low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), major mental disorders often remain untreated because of barriers related to access and resources. In rural areas and in conflict-ridden regions, the problem can be exacerbated by increased rates of mental illness and by reduced access to care. This paper describes a project designed to provide mental health services for major mental disorders among youth using a low-cost model in a rural district of the troubled Kashmir valley.
METHODS: We describe the geographic and political context, the guiding principles and adaptation of the servic

The paper gives the results of a comparative analysis of the prerequisites for the emergence and spread of epidemics of particularly dangerous infections, by using plague in Manchuria (1910-1911) and Ebola virus disease in West Africa (2014-2015) as examples. Analysis of literature and archival data and online information could reveal a number of common factors and conditions, which substantially contributed to the epidemics. Organization of anti-epidemic (preventive) measures in cases of the threatening epidemic spread, of particularly dangerous diseases must be based on the minimization, of

INTRODUCTION: War severely disrupts healthcare systems by damaging infrastructure, limiting access to care and placing healthcare workers (HCWs) at physical and psychological risk. During the 2024 Israeli war on Lebanon, repeated airstrikes created major challenges for healthcare delivery. This study explored HCWs' experiences and examined the impact of conflict on healthcare system functioning and service continuity.
METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with 19 HCWs involved in emergency response and patient care, including nurses, paramedics and ambula

Emergency management has become a widely discussed topic in recent years, particularly in relation to different types of emergencies such as climate change, natural disasters, public health, and armed conflicts. The Covid-19 pandemic has triggered unprecedented uncertainty, sparking a global emergency that raised concerns not only about health but also social, economic, and environmental stability. At a time when psychology is re-evaluating its role in supporting processes of change during emergencies, a qualitative approach can offer a concrete response to the needs that the population highli…

Prolonged insecurity, disp … plans, insecurity, healthcare strain, and family-level experiences, the study may help identify how armed conflicts shape both psychological vulnerability and reproductive decision-making. The findings may inform more responsive care for women affected by war.

BACKGROUND: Retroperitoneal rectal injuries (RRIs) caused by combined military trauma represent a complex clinical challenge, especially in modern armed conflicts. Traditional management protocols have evolved significantly since World War II, emphasizing fecal diversion and presacral drainage. However, emerging evidence supports primary repair as a viable alternative for select cases. This study evaluates the efficacy of primary repair for RRIs among military trauma patients treated at a tertiary center.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at the National Cancer Institute, Ky…

BACKGROUND: Global crises, such as pandemics and armed conflicts, highlight the need for resilient healthcare systems. Nurse middle managers play a critical meso-level role in bridging frontline staff and senior leadership, yet their crisis experiences remain underexplored.
AIMS: (1) To identify coping strategies used by nurse middle managers and their impact on bedside nurses' resilience during crises; (2) to explore how prior crises, such as COVID-19, shaped their approaches, and (3) to examine contextual factors influencing their ability to anticipate, cope, and adapt.

Armed conflicts and military offensives after the 2021 coup in Myanmar have resulted in the internal displacement of almost 3.5 million people as of 2024. The internally displaced persons (IDPs) experience higher levels of psychological distress due to ongoing fears of military attacks, forced evictions, and financial hardships. As they cope with the unpredictability of their circumstances, many IDPs report experiencing persistent trauma symptoms, including nightmares, hypervigilance, and social withdrawal. This study aims to investigate the local conditions on the ground regarding the impact …

BACKGROUND: During the course of the recent conflicts, the recommendations for resuscitation practices have evolved, but there has been no comprehensive comparative effectiveness study of these resuscitation strategies. The objective of this study was to describe the development and study design of the Deployed Hemostatic Emergency Resuscitation of Traumatic Exsanguinating Shock (Deployed HEROES) study-the first comprehensive analysis of military resuscitation practices in the deployed environment from October 2001 to October 2019.

OBJECTIVE: Leishmaniasis is the second deadliest parasitic disease in the World Health Organisation's list of neglected diseases, following malaria. Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is the most common form of the disease and it is one of the few communicable diseases with increasing incidence rates owing to factors like armed conflicts and climate change. CL can be divided into two major groups: Acute CL (ACL) and chronic CL (CCL). The aim of this study was to compare the in vitro efficacy of miltefosine and pentavalent antimony compounds in the CCL patient samples.
