Local anesthesia with prilocaine has become a routine part of ambulatory circumcision procedures. Methemoglobinemia is a rare but potentially lethal complication of local anesthetics. We report the case of a 42-day-old boy who presented with cyanosis after receiving local anesthesia with prilocaine. Methemoglobin level revealed severe methemoglobinemia (methemoglobin=44.5%). An oxidative detoxification of sulfite, which originates from sulfur dioxide taken up into a leaf, has not yet been fully understood. In this study, we discuss that redox reactions between sulfite and H2O2 have an important role for the detoxification of sulfite. Sulfite was oxidized by H2O2 and during the redox reaction, oxygen consumption was observed. The effects of trimethyltin (TMT) on behavioral and histological parameters were investigated in rats maintained on low, mid, and high levels of ascorbic acid (AA).
