Physiological and behavioral effects of tilt-induced body fluid shifts.

This paper addresses the "fluid shift theory" of space motion sickness. The primary purpose of our research was the development of procedure … essure and auditory threshold shift procedures could be used to assess individual differences among astronauts prior to space flight. Results from the terrestrial observations could be related to reported incidence/severity of motion sickness in space and used to evaluate the fluid shift theory of space motion sickness.

Exploring differential gene correlations in Arabidopsis thaliana for sustainable space farming.

The plans for sustained human presence on the Moon have increased interest in understanding the effects of lunar conditions on terrestrial biology. Plants play a vital role in space exploration, as they not only generate oxygen and remove carbon dioxide but also provide fresh food that can be rich in nutraceutical compounds important for astronaut survival in long-duration missions. Understanding how to leverage in-situ resources, such as lunar regolith, is crucial for sustainable space exploration. However, using regolith as substrate for plant growth is challenging due to its composition and

How do gravity alterations affect animal and human systems at a cellular/tissue level?

The present white paper concerns the indications and recommendations of the SciSpacE Science Community to make progress in filling the gaps of knowledge that prevent us from answering the question: "How Do Gravity Alterations Affect Animal and Human Systems at a Cellular/Tissue Level?" This is one of the five major scientific issues of the ESA roadmap "Biology in Space and Analogue Environments". Despite the many studies conducted so far on spaceflight adaptation mechanisms and related pathophysiological alterations observed in astronauts, we are not yet able to elaborate a synthetic integrate…

The importance of gravity vector on adult mammalian organisms: Effects of hypergravity on mouse testis.

In the age of space exploration, the effect of hypergravity on human physiology is a relatively neglected topic. However, astronauts have several experiences of hypergravity during their missions. The main disturbance of altered gravity can be imputed to cell cytoskeleton alteration and physiologic homeostasis of the body. Testis has proved to be a particularly sensible organ, subject to environmental alteration and physiological disturbance. This makes testis an organ eligible for investigating the alteration following exposure to altered gravity. In our study, mice were exposed to hypergravi…

Aminoazobenzene@Ag modified meshes with large extent photo-response: towards reversible oil/water removal from oil/water mixtures.

Photo-responsive materials with superwetting properties, especially in the azo-based class, have been used in water treatment because of their smart performance on wettability changes. However, their transformation extent in wettability has always troubled researchers. Here, we modified nano-Ag pine needles and aminoazobenzene (AABN) on polydopamine (PDA) pre-treated porous meshes, realizing a large-extent reversible photo-responsive wettability transformation from highly hydrophobic to highly hydrophilic. The contact angle is about 150.0° after being exposed to visible light, and is about 10.

Is HSP70 upregulation crucial for cellular proliferative response in simulated microgravity?

Astronauts are susceptible to a variety of conditions such as motion sickness, muscular atrophy, bone demineralization and cardiovascular deconditioning. These findings suggest that the adaptation to the absence of gravity is due, at least in part, to the effects exerted by microgravity at the cellular level. Indeed, a number of studies have indicated that gravity affects mammalian cell growth and differentiation through the modulation of gene expression. We have characterized the behaviour of endothelial cells and of the human monocytic cell line U937 cultured in the NASA-developed bioreactor…

Assessing applicants to the NASA flight program for their renal stone-forming potential.

Spaceflight could provoke formation of kidney stones, in part by causing hypercalciuria and hyperphosphaturia. Applicants for spaceflight who have metabolic or environmental derangements to begin with might be particularly susceptible to stone formation in space. We, therefore, analyzed 24-h urine samples for stone-forming risk factors in 104 male applicants before their selection into the astronaut-mission specialist corps. The urinary environment was abnormally supersaturated with calcium oxalate in 25.0% of applicants, brushite in 36.5%, and monosodium urate in 66.3%, predisposing these app

Chromosome aberration dosimetry in cosmonauts after single or multiple space flights.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cosmic radiation is one of the main hazards for manned space exploration. Uncertainty in radiation risk estimates for crews of long-term missions are very high, and direct biological measurements are necessary. We measured chromosomal aberrations in peripheral blood lymphocytes from 33 cosmonauts involved in space missions during the past 11 years. METHODS: Blood lymphocytes from the cosmonauts were stimulated to grow in vitro and were harvested at their first mitosis. Slides were either stained with Giemsa stain for dicentrics analysis, or painted with whole-chromosome D

Psychophysiological aspects of increasing resistance to space motion sickness.

One of the actual and difficulty solved problems of the adaptation period to microgravitation is space motion sickness (MS) that has the negative influence on well-being and performance of crewmembers in the initial and highly crucial phase of the orbital flight. Among the prophylactic measures for decrease of the unfavourable influence of space MS the preflight training is of great importance, and its role in perspective undoubtedly will grow in connection with increase of the number of crewmembers. During the last years several authors received experimental materials evidenced that as a base

Spatial Tribological Properties of PI/PTFE Based Self-Stratifying Composite Coatings Grafted by Amino-POSS.

In low Earth orbit (LEO), special environments such as atomic oxygen (AO), alternating high and low temperatures, and high vacuum can seriously affect the reliability and service lifetime of moving parts of space equipment. Therefore, there is an increasingly urgent demand for long-life, high-performance lubricating protective coatings with the rapid evolution of astronautical technology. In this study, polyimide (PI) was modified by polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) with different numbers of functional groups to fabricate PI-based self-stratifying gradient composite lubricating coat

Integrated cross-species translation and biophysical multi-scale modeling links molecular signatures and locomotory phenotypes in spaceflight-induced sarcopenia.

Age-related skeletal muscle deterioration, referred to as sarcopenia, poses significant risks to astronaut health and mission success during spaceflight, yet its multisystem drivers remain poorly understood. While terrestrial sarcopenia manifests gradually through aging, spaceflight induces analogous musculoskeletal decline within weeks, providing an accelerated model to study conserved atrophy mechanisms. Here, we introduced an integrative framework combining cross-species genetic analysis with physiological modeling to understand mechanistic pathways in space-induced sarcopenia. By analyzing

Personalization and Fortification of In-Space Manufactured Emulsified Beverages for Long-Term Space Travel.

The current trend of individualized food items (nutrient content and flavor) can be particularly valuable to support people's health and well-being in isolated environments where access to fresh foods and diverse nutrition is difficult. At the same time, bioactive compounds and micronutrients can be employed to countermeasure any health hazards characteristic for the respective environment. Outer space is well-known as a hazardous environment due to microgravity, space radiation, and extreme living situation, whereas food monotony has led to insufficient caloric intake in the past. Enhancing cell-scale performance via sustained release of the varicella-zoster virus antigen from a microneedle patch under simulated microgravity.

The immune system of astronauts might become weakened in the microgravity environment in space, and the dormant varicella-zoster virus (VZV) in the body might be reactivated, seriously affecting their work and safety. For working in orbit for the long term, there is currently no efficient and durable delivery system of general vaccines in a microgravity environment. Accordingly, based on the previous foundation, we designed, modified, and synthesized a biodegradable and biocompatible copolymer, polyethylene glycol-polysulfamethazine carbonate urethane (PEG-PSCU) that could be mainly adopted to…

[Mechanism of weightlessness osteoporosis and preventive and therapeutic effect of traditional Chinese medicine].

Weightlessness environment can lead to the muscle atrophy and body fluid distribution upward, which can cause the bone calcium metabolism disorder and always accompanied by the loss of bone microstructure and increased rate of bone fracture. Under microgravity, the astronauts are much easier to decrease the Ca2+ ion in bone, which can cause serious osteoporosis. However the bone lost is not equilibrium, it is especially serious in the mechanism loading bone and the recovery process is more difficult. These are very different from the osteoporosis in older people and postmenopausal osteoporosis. …

The importance of exercising in space.

As a direct consequence of exposure to microgravity, astronauts experience a set of physiological changes which can have serious medical implications when they return to earth. Most immediate and significant are the headward shift of body fluids and the removal of gravitational loading from bone and muscles, which lead to progressive changes in the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems. Cardiovascular adaptations result in an increased incidence of orthostatic intolerance (fainting) following flight, decreased cardiac output, and reduced capacity for exercise. Changes in the musculoskelet…

Nuclear medicine evaluation of motion sickness and medications on gastric emptying time.

Diminished gastric motility and lack of bowel sounds have been observed in astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle (4). In this study subjects were given scopolamine 0.6 mg with d-amphetamine 5 mg with and without neostigmine 15 mg. Neostigmine 15 mg alone was also compared with placebo for effect on gastric emptying time. In an additional test, subjects performed head movements in a rotating chair to an end-point of motion sickness short of vomiting. Ten ounces of isotonic saline containing 1 mCl of Tc 99mDPTA was ingested 2 h after the medications and immediately after rotation. The counts from …
