Construction and application of a model for predicting athletes' injury risk based on machine learning.

Accurate prediction of sports-related injuries is essential for optimizing athlete health and performance. This study evaluated machine learning (ML) models for injury risk in 300 male professional football players (ages 18-28) monitored over two competitive seasons (2021-2022). Injuries were defined as musculoskeletal conditions causing at least one missed training session or match, confirmed via ICD-10 diagnoses. Daily data on training workload, recovery, wellness, heart-rate variability, cumulative minutes played, and injury history were collected. Features were preprocessed with normalizat

Prevalence of Sports Injuries Among Athletes in the Lucknow Region: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Sports-related injuries pose a critical concern, particularly among adolescents and young adults actively involved in athletic pursuits. In India, efforts to address sports-related injuries are hindered by the lack of comprehensive injury surveillance systems, underdeveloped sports medicine facilities, and inadequate awareness among athletes about effective injury prevention and management practices. This cross-sectional study aims to investigate the prevalence, distribution, and causes of sports injuries among athletes in the Lucknow region of Uttar Pradesh, India. Data were collected from 40

Femoral anteversion as a potential risk factor for anterior cruciate ligament injuries in athletes.

PURPOSE: Non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are influenced by the anatomic and biomechanical characteristics of the lower limb. The combination of knee valgus, hip internal rotation and tibial external rotation are important contributors to non-contact ACL injuries. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of femoral anteversion on the incidence of ACL injuries among athletes. METHODS: A retrospective comparative study was conducted on 137 adult male athletes with high suspicion of ACL injury following a sports-related injury. The patients were classified into two gro

Elbow injuries in overhead throwing athletes: clinical evaluation, treatment, and osteopathic considerations.

Injury to the elbow is very common in the throwing athlete and can potentially lead to long absences from play and, in the most severe scenarios, medical retirement. The throwing motion is a highly complex series of movements through the entire kinetic chain that results in very high angular velocities and valgus forces at the elbow joint. The repetitive nature of overhead throwing in combination with the high levels of accumulated force at the elbow puts both pediatric and adult athletes at risk of both acute and chronic overuse injuries of the elbow. This review provides an update on common

An unusual wrist injury in a parkour-athlete: Transstyloid, transscaphoid, transtriquetral perilunate dislocation.

Perilunate dislocations are uncommon high energy injuries. The combination of fractures resulting in a trans-styloid, trans-scaphoid, and trans-triquetral perilunate fracture dislocation is extremely rare. We describe a 20 year old male who suffered this injury after a fall from height while parkouring. He underwent open reduction and internal fixation with ligamentous repair and carpal tunnel decompression. After 3 months, he was noted to have a radiographic evidence of scapholunate dissociation and he returned to the operative room for definitive fixation. Despite this complication, the fina

A Pilot Survey Study of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries in Female University Athletes.

Introduction Female sports players are at increased risk of soft tissue knee injuries (STKIs) compared to their male counterparts. Injury prevention programs effectively reduce the incidence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) knee injuries. This pilot study, therefore, aimed to examine the prevalence, type, and management of STKIs within a population of female university sports players at the University of Cambridge. Additionally, this study aimed to examine the perceived risk of ACL injuries and knowledge of long-term complications, alongside participation and attitudes towards injury preven

The biomechanical signature of loss of consciousness: computational modelling of elite athlete head injuries.

Sports related head injuries can cause transient neurological events including loss of consciousness and dystonic posturing. However, it is unknown why head impacts that appear similar produce distinct neurological effects. The biomechanical effect of impacts can be estimated using computational models of strain within the brain. Here, we investigate the strain and strain rates produced by professional American football impacts that led to loss of consciousness, posturing or no neurological signs. We reviewed 1280 National Football League American football games and selected cases where the te

The impact of concussion on subsequent injury risk in elite junior Australian football athletes.

OBJECTIVES: Concussion increases injury risk. However, this has not been investigated in junior Australian football and it is unknown whether the location, severity, and mechanism of subsequent injuries differ after concussion vs. non-concussion injury. DESIGN: Prospective cohort. METHODS: 1455 elite adolescent male Australian footballers were tracked across seven seasons to determine whether subsequent injury risk was greater after concussion compared to non-concussion index injury using multilevel survival analysis. Mixed-effects logistic regression compared location and mechanism. Mixed-e

Joint hypermobility in athletes is associated with shoulder injuries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Joint hypermobility in athletes is associated with increased risk of knee injuries, but its role in relation to shoulder injuries has not been scrutinized. Therefore, our aim was to synthesize the evidence on the association between joint hypermobility and shoulder injuries in athletes. METHODS: Data sources were MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, and SPORTDiscus from inception to 27th February 2021. Eligibility criteria were observational studies of athletes (including military personnel), mean age ≥ 16 years, and with a transparent grouping of those with and without joint hypermobility. A

The impact of nonoperative hip and core injuries on National Football League athlete performance.

OBJECTIVES: Hip and core injuries are common in National Football League (NFL) athletes; however, the impact following injury remains unclear. The goal of this manuscript was to determine the impact of nonoperative hip and core injuries on return to play and performance. METHODS: NFL athletes who sustained a hip or core injury treated nonoperatively between 2010 and 2016 were identified. Offensive and defensive power ratings were calculated for each player's injury season and two seasons before and after to assess longitudinal impact. A matched control group without an identified hip and/or c

Identification of Risk Factors Prospectively Associated With Musculoskeletal Injury in a Warrior Athlete Population.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal injuries are a primary source of disability. Understanding how risk factors predict injury is necessary to individualize and enhance injury reduction programs. HYPOTHESIS: Because of the multifactorial nature of musculoskeletal injuries, multiple risk factors will provide a useful method of categorizing warrior athletes based on injury risk. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective observational cohort study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 2. METHODS: Baseline data were collected on 922 US Army soldiers/warrior athletes (mean age, 24.7 ± 5.2 years; mean body mass index, 26.8 ± 3.4 k

Abduction in Proximal Hamstring Tendon Avulsion Injury Mechanism: A Report on 3 Athletes.

Proximal hamstring tendon avulsions are typically sustained during forced hip hyperflexion combined with knee extension. We present 3 cases of athletes with a proximal hamstring tendon avulsion caused by an alternative injury mechanism that also involves a considerable hip abduction component (flexion-abduction injury mechanism). All cases had at least one concurrent injury of the medial thigh muscles, either on the ipsilateral or contralateral side. The 2 elite athletes with this injury mechanism returned to sport at preinjury level relatively quickly. A history of the flexion-abduction mecha

Incidence and predictors of roller derby injuries among female roller derby athletes.

Little is known about roller derby injuries. To describe the types of injuries that female roller derby athletes experience, quantify the incidence of injuries and examine the relationship between selected demographic variables and injuries. Women's roller derby leagues were contacted explaining the study and requesting participation. A second message was sent with the link to the electronic questionnaire to collect data from March to June 2015. Of the 1 395 respondents, 48.7% (679) reported having at least one injury in the previous 12 months. The skaters' average age was 32 and have played r

Tibial Tubercle Avulsion Fracture with Multiple Concomitant Injuries in an Adolescent Male Athlete.

Tibial tubercle avulsion fractures are an uncommon injury occurring due to strong contraction of the quadriceps femoris muscle during leg extension, ultimately causing failure of the physis at the patellar tendon insertion. This injury has been previously reported with various concomitant injuries, such as compartment syndrome from bleeding into the anterior compartment, vascular injury, patellar tendon avulsion, and meniscal injury-exhibited only with fracture types that extend intra-articularly. We report the case of a 14-year-old healthy adolescent male basketball player who sustained this

Implications of altered autonomic control on sports performance in athletes with spinal cord injury.

It is well known that athletes with spinal cord injury (SCI) may experience altered autonomic physiology that impacts their exercise capacity and sports performance. This is particularly relevant given the ever-increasing number of individuals with SCI who are actively engaged in sports at all levels, from community-based adaptive sports to elite Paralympic competitions. As such, the purpose of this article is to review the present literature regarding the implications of altered autonomic control on the safety and performance of athletes with SCI. A particular emphasis will be placed on the a
