BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are highly comorbid. The neural basis of this comorbidity remains unclear. We compared brain structural-functional coupling (SC-FC coupling) across ASD subgroups and typically developing (TD) controls to parse the neurobiological heterogeneity of ASD.
METHODS: We analyzed T1-weighted and resting-state fMRI data from 331 participants from ABIDE II (130 ASD [39 ASD+ADHD, 91 ASD-only] and 201 TD). For each participant, we extracted multivariate structural features from T1-weighted images to construct a

BACKGROUND/AIM: This study analyzes thyroid function parameters (free T3, free T4, TSH) in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), ADHD with specific learning disorder, and healthy controls, to determine whether subtle thyroid dysregulation contributes to the phenotypic heterogeneity of ADHD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective, cross-sectional study included 135 children aged 6-18 years: 62 diagnosed with ADHD (38 isolated ADHD and 24 ADHD+SLD) and 73 healthy controls. Demographic, anthropometric, and thyroid function data (free T3, free T4, TSH) were extracted f

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are two common neuropsychiatric conditions. Obsessive beliefs, comprising the importance and control of intrusive thoughts, inflated sense of responsibility for harm, overestimations of threat, perfectionism, and intolerance of uncertainty have been suggested to influence OCD symptomatology. Although OCD patients with ADHD have been reported to have different clinical characteristics compared to patients with OCD without ADHD, it has not been previously investigated whether OCD patients with and

Findings of executive functioning deficits in Tourette syndrome (TS) have so far been inconsistent, possibly due to methodological challenges of previous studies, such as the use of small sample sizes and not accounting for comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), or medication use. We aimed to address these issues by examining several areas of executive functioning (response inhibition, attentional flexibility, cognitive control, and working memory) and psychomotor speed in 174 8-to-12-year-old children with TS [n = 34 without (TS-ADHD) an

OBJECTIVE: Conduct disorder (CD) is associated with impairments in facial emotion recognition. However, CD commonly co-occurs with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); thus, it is unclear whether these impairments are explained by ADHD or by one of its core features-inattention. We explored whether emotion recognition impairments are specific to individuals with ADHD and comorbid CD while also examining the mechanisms that might explain such deficits.
METHOD: A total of 63 male and female adolescents with ADHD (mean age = 14.2 years, age range = 11-18 years) and with (ADHD+CD) or

OBJECTIVE: Studies investigating neurocognitive deficits in youth with conduct disorder (CD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are often confounded by the high rates of comorbidity between the two.
METHOD: Neurocognitive functioning was examined in three diagnostic groups (ADHD only, CD only, comorbid ADHD and CD) matched by age, sex, IQ, and medication status (n=28-32 per group).
RESULTS: No significant differences emerged between the diagnostic groups on measures of risk-taking or response inhibition. Children with CD performed better on a measure of spatial planning than

While neuropsychological deficits in both "hot" and "cool" executive functions (EFs) have been documented among individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), these EF deficits are not universal across all individuals with this diagnosis. One potential moderator of executive dysfunction may be the presence of comorbid oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). This study examined the association between "hot" and "cool" EFs and comorbid ODD in children with ADHD. Thirty-three children with ADHD and comorbid ODD (ADHD+ODD), 67 with ADHD without ODD (ADHD-ODD), and 30 typically deve

BACKGROUND: Aggressive behaviour, defined as sudden, explosive outbursts of rage, has been reported as a clinical problem in approximately 23% to 40% of Tourette syndrome (TS) patients (1-5). Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are also reported in 50% to 70% of TS patients (6).
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether aggressive behaviour was associated with TS directly or found primarily in TS with comorbid ADHD or OCD.
METHOD: Aggressive behaviour in 33 nonmedicated patients with TS (ages 6 to 14 years) and 6 healthy control subjects (ages 7 to

Although the findings from recent controlled studies suggest that methylphenidate is a safe and effective treatment for many children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and comorbid tic disorder, relatively little is known about drug effects on school behavior. Thirty-four prepubertal children with ADHD and tic disorder received placebo and 3 doses of methylphenidate (0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 mg/kg) twice daily for 2 weeks each under double-blind conditions. Treatment effects were assessed using direct observations of child behavior in classroom, lunchroom, and playground settings.

The study compared 8-year-old children with pure attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (n = 21), specific learning disorder (LD) (n = 12), and both (ADHD + LD) (n = 27) on a comprehensive set of neuropsychological measures. The tests were mainly derived from a new neuropsychological instrument, the Neuropsychological Assessment of Children. The children with ADHD were specifically impaired in the control and inhibition of impulses; the children with LD were impaired in phonological awareness, verbal memory span, and storytelling, as well as in verbal IQ. Children with both showed all

BACKGROUND: Several studies have reported associations between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and substance use disorders (SUD). However, sex-differences in ADHD and SUD, especially when associated with other psychiatric comorbidities, are less studied.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the prevalence of SUD among individuals with and without ADHD to describe groups, defined by sex and psychiatric comorbidity, who may benefit from targeted follow-up.

INTRODUCTION: Studies of Gaming Disorder (GD) consistently identify co-morbidity with various psychiatric disorders including major depression, obsessive compulsive disorder and anxiety disorders. One of the strongest associations has been with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). We present a systematic review of this association by pooling and integrating available evidence.
METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, PsychInfo and CINHAHL were searched for articles that reported a quantitative association between GD and ADHD and its dimensions, using equivalent search terms. Quality appraisal was

BACKGROUND: Recent findings suggest an association between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Thus, we evaluated the clinical associated features of ADHD in a large sample of adult OCD patients.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study including 955 adult patients with OCD from the Brazilian Research Consortium of Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders (C-TOC). Clinical characteristics in adult OCD patients with and without comorbid ADHD were compared using Fisher's exact test, t-tests or Mann-Whitney tests. Bivariate analyses were followed by lo

BACKGROUND: Probands with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at increased risk for several psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. The risk of these disorders among the siblings of probands has not been thoroughly assessed in a population-based cohort.
METHODS: Every child born in Finland in 1991-2005 and diagnosed with ADHD in 1995-2011 were identified from national registers. Each case was matched with four controls on sex, place, and date of birth. The full siblings of the cases and controls were born in 1981-2007 and diagnosed in 1981-2013. In total, 7369 cases with

OBJECTIVE: We examined whether some temperamental traits would be associated with persistence of attention deficit-hyperacitivty disorder (ADHD) in adulthood independent from bipolar disorder (BD).
METHODS: Eighty-one ADHD patients without a comorbid diagnosis of BD were divided into two groups, those with childhood ADHD (n=46), and those with Adulthood ADHD (n=35). The severity of childhood and adulthood ADHD were assessed by using the Wender Utah Rating Scale (WURS-25) and Turgay's Adult ADD/ADHD Diagnosis and Evaluation Scale (DES). Subjects' temperamental characteristics were examined usi

OBJECTIVE: High comorbidity ratio of bipolar mood disorder (BMD) with Axis I and Axis II diagnoses is reported in the literature. The possible relationship between BMD and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in all age groups has been attracting more attention of researchers due to highly overlapping symptoms such as excessive talking, attention deficit, and increased motor activity. In this study, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of ADHD comorbidity in BMD patients and the clinical features of these patients.
METHODS: Of 142 patients, who presented to the Bipolar Disorder U

OBJECTIVE: Although attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is frequently comorbid with Tourette's disorder (TD), it is unclear whether they have a common genetic etiology. Familial relationships between DSM-IV ADHD and TD are studied in TD+ADHD, TD-only (TD-ADHD), ADHD-only (ADHD-TD), and control groups.
