Childhood trauma and hallucinations in bipolar affective disorder: preliminary investigation.

BACKGROUND: Strong evidence exists for an association between childhood trauma, particularly childhood sexual abuse, and hallucinations in schizophrenia. Hallucinations are also well-documented symptoms in people with bipolar affective disorder. AIMS: To investigate the relationship between childhood sexual abuse and other childhood traumas and hallucinations in people with bipolar affective disorder. METHOD: A sample of 96 participants was drawn from the Medical Research Council multi-centre trial of cognitive-behavioural therapy for bipolar affective disorder. The trial therapists recorded

The relationship between subjective self-rating and objective voice assessment measures.

INTRODUCTION: Comprehensive protocols of voice disorders have to consist of both subjective and objective tools to study vocal performance. Comparing subjective to objective measures is essential to determine their usefulness in assessing dysphonia. AIM: The aim of the study is to study the correlation of objective voice measures and the patient's subjective self-rating assessment. SUBJECTS AND METHODOLOGY: A total of 100 patients with voice complaints due to various pathological disorders were subjected to voice assessment protocol using: auditory perceptual assessment, acoustic voice asses

The use of the ADI-R as a diagnostic tool in the differential diagnosis of children with infantile autism and children with a receptive language disorder.

Children with infantile autism and children with a specific receptive language disorder often show similar behavioural problems, making the differentiation between these two diagnostic categories difficult. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of parental information in the differential diagnosis of the two types of disorders mentioned above. Sixteen children with a receptive language disorder and 11 children with infantile autism participated in the study. All children had normal non-verbal IQs. The ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised) was performed with all children

Exploring the cognitive phenotype of Kabuki (Niikawa-Kuroki) syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Kabuki syndrome (KS) is a Mendelian disorder, characterised by short stature, facial dysmorphisms and developmental delay and/or intellectual disability. Clarification of the neurocognitive profile in KS may provide directions for education and treatment interventions for KS. Previous studies on cognitive functioning in KS are scarce and have mainly focused on the general level of intelligence. The few more extensive studies suggested weaknesses in language skills, visuoconstruction, perceptual reasoning and speed of information processing. Other relevant domains such as memory, ex

[Congenital amusia and its effects on non-musical skills].

INTRODUCTION: Congenital amusia is a specific condition in which the individual is unable to recognise tonal variations in a piece of musical. This cannot be explained by a previous brain injury, hearing loss, cognitive deficit, socio-affective disorder or lack of environmental stimulation. The current estimated prevalence is 1.5% of the world population, with a significant genetic component among those who suffer from it. It has been claimed that certain cognitive abilities in the emotional, spatial and language fields may be affected in people with amusia. AIM: To review the literature desc

The long-term effects of auditory training on children with autism.

Eighty children, 3-17 years of age, with autism or Asperger syndrome and mild to severe distress in the presence of some sounds, were randomly allocated to two groups. The experimental group received auditory training and the control group listened to the same unmodified music under the same conditions. Significant improvements in behavior and severity of autism were maintained for 12 months by both groups. Informal data suggested that a range of abnormal responses to sound and other sensory abnormalities may also have improved. Verbal and performance IQ increased significantly 3 to 12 months

The relation between perception and brain activity in gaze-evoked tinnitus.

Tinnitus is a phantom sound percept that can be severely disabling. Its pathophysiology is poorly understood, partly due to the inability to objectively measure neural correlates of tinnitus. Gaze-evoked tinnitus (GET) is a rare form of tinnitus that may arise after vestibular schwannoma removal. Subjects typically describe tinnitus in the deaf ear on the side of the surgery that can be modulated by peripheral eye gaze. This phenomenon offers a unique opportunity to study the relation between tinnitus and brain activity. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging in humans to show that in n

Category learning difficulties in ADHD across modalities and multiple learning systems.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been associated with suboptimal functioning of both the prefrontal cortex and the striatum. These abnormalities may impede the acquisition of perceptual categories, important for fundamental abilities such as object recognition and speech perception. While prior research has shown that children with ADHD perform comparably to neurotypical peers in visual category learning despite using suboptimal strategies, much remains unknown about how adults with ADHD acquire perceptual categories, where more mature functions may shape learning processes

Neural Indicator of Altered Mismatch Detection Predicts Atypical Cognitive-Perceptual Experiences in Psychotic Psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: Atypical auditory processing (AAP) in psychotic psychopathology is evident in early (N1), mid-latency (P2/N2/mismatch negativity), and late (P3) neural responses. The influence of attention on AAP, and how temporal stages of AAP are associated with phenomenology of psychotic psychopathology are not well understood. METHODS: We used a directed attention oddball task to characterize stages of AAP in psychosis and to examine the influence of selective attention. Ninety patients with schizophrenia (SCZ), 53 patients with bipolar disorder (BP), 90 healthy controls and 72 first-degree r

Audio-visual crossmodal connectivity in perceiving distorted speech: A comparison between patients with cleft palate and typical listeners.

This study investigates audio-visual crossmodal connectivity during the perception of distorted speech using task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). A randomized block design was employed, involving 20 patients with cleft palate and 20 typical listeners. Participants underwent perceptual tasks involving both cleft-related glottal stop and typical speech while fMRI scans were conducted. Regional interactions between the auditory and visual cortices were analyzed using dynamic causal modeling (DCM). Individual-level effective connectivity analysis revealed that, during the perce

About the mechanisms of auditory verbal hallucinations: a positron emission tomographic study.

OBJECTIVE: Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) likely result from disorders, as yet unspecified, of the neural mechanisms of language. Here we examine the functional neuroanatomy of single-word reading in patients with and without a history of AVH. METHOD: Eighteen medicated schizophrenia patients (8 with AVH and 10 without AVH) and 12 healthy control subjects were scanned with PET (15)O-water technique under 2 conditions: reading aloud English nouns and passively looking at English nouns without reading them. RESULTS: The contrast between the 2 conditions shows higher activation in Wernic

Scn2a-linked myelination deficits and synaptic plasticity alterations drive auditory processing disorders in an ASD mouse model.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by complex sensory processing deficits, which continue to elude comprehensive mechanistic understanding. A key unresolved question is how alterations in neural connectivity and communication translate into the behavioral manifestations seen in ASD. Here, we investigate how oligodendrocyte dysfunction alters myelin plasticity and neuronal activity, leading to auditory processing disorder associated with ASD. We focus on the SCN2A gene, an ASD-risk factor, to understand its role in myelination and neural processing wit

The cognitive neuropsychology of auditory hallucinations: a parallel auditory pathways framework.

Auditory hallucinations are generally defined as false perceptions. Recent developments in auditory neuroscience have rapidly increased our understanding of normal auditory perception revealing (partially) separate pathways for the identification ("what") and localization ("where") of auditory objects. The current review offers a reexamination of the nature of auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia using this object-based framework. First, the structural and functional organization of auditory what and where pathways is briefly described. Then, using recent functional neuroimaging data from

The effectiveness of music-movement integration for vulnerable groups: a systematic literature review.

This systematic review synthesized the outcomes of previous intervention studies published from January 2000-October 2022 to evaluate the effectiveness of Dalcroze-based or similar music-movement integration among groups of individuals considered vulnerable (in relation to their abilities and health/wellbeing). The target groups addressed in previous intervention studies included individuals with special educational needs (such as disorders, disabilities, or impairments) or with a (risk of) decline in health and/or physical strength. Twenty articles met the review inclusion criteria. All studi

Auditory Vigilance and Working Memory in Youth at Familial Risk for Schizophrenia or Affective Psychosis in the Harvard Adolescent Family High Risk Study.

BACKGROUND: The degree of overlap between schizophrenia (SCZ) and affective psychosis (AFF) has been a recurring question since Kraepelin's subdivision of the major psychoses. Studying nonpsychotic relatives allows a comparison of disorder-associated phenotypes, without potential confounds that can obscure distinctive features of the disorder. Because attention and working memory have been proposed as potential endophenotypes for SCZ and AFF, we compared these cognitive features in individuals at familial high-risk (FHR) for the disorders. METHODS: Young, unmedicated, first-degree relatives (

[When virtual reality gives voice to silence: A case report of a patient with schizoaffective disorder and progressive bilateral deafness treated with Avatar therapy].

Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) are a common and often debilitating symptom of psychotic disorders. Despite pharmacological treatments, approximately 30% of patients continue to experience resistant AVH. Avatar therapy (AT), a virtual reality therapy, is an innovative approach aimed at changing the relationship between the patient and their voices. This case report describes the clinical course of a 72-year-old man with schizoaffective disorder and bilateral hearing loss with almost total deafness in the right ear, who reported AVH in both ears, but more intense on the right side. This at

Clinical predictors of course and outcome in delusional psychosis.

The purpose of the study was to examine whether clinical variables of first-admitted patients with delusional psychosis were of predictive importance of course and outcome illuminated through the dimensions: psychotic symptoms, impairment, remission, and relapse at 2-year follow-up. Male, sex, age below 30 years, unmarried, long duration of psychosis, and absence of psychosocial stress prior to first admission were all statistically predictive of poor outcome.
