The relationships between symptoms and quality of life over the course of cognitive-behavioral therapy for panic disorder in Japan.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined the relationships between changes in symptoms and changes in quality of life (QOL) during cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for panic disorder (PD). METHODS: We treated 198 PD patients with group CBT in Japan. Using multiple regression analysis, we examined the associations between changes in QOL and changes in PD symptoms or comorbid psychological symptoms during CBT. RESULTS: Changes in anticipatory anxiety, agoraphobic fear/avoidance, and somatization were significant predictors of changes in some aspects of QOL. DISCUSSION: It might be useful to decrea

Relationship between Dementia Severity and Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia in Dementia with Lewy Bodies and Alzheimer's Disease Patients.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are common in the clinical manifestation of dementia. Although most patients with dementia exhibit some BPSD during the course of the illness, the association of BPSD with the stage of dementia remains unclear. It was the aim of this study to evaluate the impact of severity of dementia on the expression of BPSD in patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: Ninety-seven patients with DLB and 393 patients with AD were recruited from 8 dementia clinics across Japan. BPSD were asses

Olanzapine as a possible treatment of behavioral symptoms in vascular dementia: risks of cerebrovascular events. A controlled, open-label study.

Behavioral problems produce excess disability, potentially devastating in cognitively impaired patients. These behavioral symptoms can be a major cause of stress, anxiety and concern for caregivers. While psychotropic drugs are frequently used to control these symptoms, they have the potential for significant side effects, which include sedation, disinhibition, depression, falls, incontinence, parkinsonism and akathisia. We followed up (for 12 months) a group of 346 consecutive outpatients, with a diagnosis of subcortical vascular dementia or multi-infarctual dementia. Patients eligible for th…

Cholinergic modulation of the picrotoxin-induced electrocorticographical events and behavioral "pain-like" symptoms at somatomotor cortical level in the rat.

In this study, we examined the modulation by acetylcholine of electrocorticographical (ECoG) ictal events and spontaneous pain-like behaviors following cortical application of the GABA(A) antagonist picrotoxin in the awake rat. Distilled water as vehicle, the cholinomimetic substance eserine, and the general muscarinic antagonist atropine were microinjected 10 min before the second microinjection of 2 microg picrotoxin into the hind paw region of the somatomotor cortex (SmI). Under these conditions, we observed that eserine (physostigmine, 1 microg, 10 microg, and 20 microg) did not consistent

Rethinking Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia in Severe Alzheimer's Disease: From Intentional Explanation to an Ecological, Body-Environment Framework.

In contemporary dementia care, behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are often understood as expressions of the person's intentions or needs. This paper examines the limits of understanding BPSD as "expressions of intention" in severe Alzheimer's disease. It argues that while desires may still be preserved, the formation and maintenance of beliefs-an essential constituent of intentions in the standard desire-belief model-are likely to be severely compromised. As a result, many behavioral and perceptual symptoms closely related to basic activities of daily living cannot be ad

DSP-2342, a novel 5-hydroxytryptamine 2A/7 receptor antagonist, has therapeutic potential for behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia.

In an aging society, behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) have emerged as a major public health concern. BPSD includes diverse symptoms such as psychosis, anxiety, and agitation/aggression. Although antipsychotics are widely used to manage BPSD, their use is limited because of safety concerns, particularly extrapyramidal symptoms associated with dopamine D2 receptor antagonism. Therefore, there is a need for antipsychotic drugs that are effective without relying heavily on D2 receptor blockade. Here, we report DSP-2342, a novel selective 5-hydroxytryptamine 2A/7 (5-HT2A/5-H

Comparative effects of moderate-intensity continuous training and high-intensity interval training on ADHD symptoms and behavioral inhibition in children.

UNLABELLED: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental condition in children, characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Recent studies have investigated the potential role of physical exercise as a complementary intervention to traditional ADHD treatments. This study aimed to compare the effects of moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on ADHD symptoms and behavioral inhibition in children diagnosed with ADHD. In a randomized controlled trial, 60 male participants aged 7-10 years were

Human microbiota from drug-naive patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder drives behavioral symptoms and neuroinflammation via succinic acid in mice.

Emerging evidence suggests that the gut microbiota is closely related to psychiatric disorders. However, little is known about the role of the gut microbiota in the development of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Here, to investigate the contribution of gut microbiota to the pathogenesis of OCD, we transplanted fecal microbiota from first-episode, drug-naive OCD patients or demographically matched healthy individuals into antibiotic-treated specific pathogen-free (SPF) mice and showed that colonization with OCD microbiota is sufficient to induce core behavioral deficits, including abnormal

Quercetin's Restorative Properties in Male Mice with 3-Nitropropionic Acid-induced Huntington-like Symptoms: Molecular Docking, Behavioral, and Biochemical Assessment.

The neurotoxicity of 3-Nitropropionic acid (3-NP) is well known. Herein, the prophylactic versus therapeutic effects of quercetin (QCT) were investigated against 3-NP-induced behavioral anomalies and oxidative neural damage. Thirty male mice were assigned into five groups; the negative control group, the QCT group (25 mg/kg/day, p.o. for 21 days), the 3-NP group (17 days), the prophylactic group (QCT administration for 14 consecutive days, and then 3-NP was administrated), the therapeutic group (3-NP was administrated and then QCT for 21 days). At the end of the animal treatment, behavioral st

Epigenetic effects of cannabis: A systematic scoping review of behavioral and emotional symptoms associated with cannabis use and exocannabinoid exposure.

BACKGROUND: Recent research suggests that epigenetic modifications may mediate the behavioral effects of cannabis, influencing exocannabinnoids' long term effects in cognitive function and its role in the emergence of psychotic symptoms. BASIC PROCEDURES: In this systematic scoping review, we assessed the current evidence of epigenetic effects associated with the use of cannabis or exocannabinoid administration and their relationship with behavioral and emotional symptoms. We searched PubMed, Cochrane CENTRAL, and Web of Science, up to January 2022, using the terms "cannabis" and "epigenetics

Efficacy and acceptability of a self-guided internet-delivered cognitive-behavioral educational program for obsessive-compulsive symptoms with international recruitment.

Cognitive-behavioural therapy is an effective treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, there are many barriers in accessing this treatment, with stigma being a particularly prominent barrier for many patients. Self-guided internet-delivered cognitive-behavioural therapy (ICBT), which does not require any contact with a therapist, has the potential to overcome this barrier. However, there is limited research on the efficacy of self-guided ICBT for OCD. The aim of the current study was to examine the efficacy of self-guided ICBT for OCD in a large international sample. Two hun

Association of Intrinsic Functional Brain Network and Longitudinal Development of Cognitive Behavioral Symptoms in Young Girls With Fragile X Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is an X chromosome-linked genetic disorder characterized by increased risk for behavioral, social, and neurocognitive deficits. Because males express a more severe phenotype than females, research has focused largely on identifying neural abnormalities in all-male or both-sex populations with FXS. Therefore, very little is known about the neural alterations that contribute to cognitive behavioral symptoms in females with FXS. This cross-sectional study aimed to elucidate the large-scale resting-state brain networks associated with the multidomain cognitive …

Longitudinal links between behavioral activation coping strategies and depressive symptoms of U.S. adults living alone during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic and related physical distancing measures have posed a significant threat to the mental health of adults, particularly those living alone. Accordingly, the World Health Organization implemented the #HealthyAtHome program, encouraging people to keep in regular contact with loved ones, stay physically active, and keep a regular routine. The current study aims to examine a micro-longitudinal link between behavioral activation coping strategies (exercise, meditation, relaxation, and social connection) and depressive symptoms among adults who lived alone during the COVID-19 pan
